Gas Tax Increase Fails in Louisiana

Tennessee Star

The Hayride is reporting that the effort to increase the gas tax in the state of Louisiana has failed in the State’s House of Representatives: We heard this morning from several people in the know that at last night’s meeting of the Louisiana House Republican Delegation, Rep. Steve Carter admitted to the members that HB 632, the gas tax increase bill he’s been trying to drag across the finish line for this entire legislative session, simply does not have the 70 votes required for passage on the House floor. And shortly thereafter, the Louisiana Association of General Contractors, which had been attempting to rally support for Carter’s gas tax bill, threw in the towel on the gas tax. That association’s CEO Ken Naquin said as much in an e-mail to AGC’s membership… From: Ken Naquin Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2017 10:27 AM To: LAGC Subject: Fuel Tax Bill Dead for Session To: LAGC Highway Division Members Ladies and Gentlemen: Yes, the tag line is correct. Rep. Steve Carter will address the House floor today and hang HB 632 up, on the calendar. As of late last night, after an exhaustive full floor lobby, we can only garner 60 yes votes,…

Montreat College Defends Asking Faculty To Commit To Being Pro-Life And Pro-Traditional Marriage

A small Christian college in North Carolina long supported by the family of evangelist Billy Graham is defending a new requirement that faculty and staff sign a pledge saying they are pro-life and for traditional marriage. The Montreat College statement says that faculty and staff will “uphold the God-given worth of every human being, from conception to death, as unique image-bearers of God” and “affirm chastity among the unmarried and the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman.” The statement also addresses aspects of personal character, such as being a person of integrity and avoiding immodesty, and expects signers to regard the Bible as “the infallible Word of God, completely inspired and authoritative, and is to govern Christians in every aspect of life and conduct.” Located in the town of Montreat near Asheville, the college has only 876 students. It was run for many years by an association affiliated with the mainline Presbyterian Church (USA) but became nondenominational more than a decade ago. The school is a member of the conservative Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Billy Graham and his late wife Ruth were married in the college’s chapel, which now bears their name, according to the Charlotte Observer.…

Commentary: The End Of Obama’s Corrupt Global Warming Treaty

by George Rasley, ConservativeHQ.com Editor Thursday, President Trump announced that the United States is withdrawing from Obama’s disastrous Paris climate accord. The President’s action marks another important campaign promise fulfilled, and it also marks the end of one of Obama’s most corrupt acts as President. While Obama and his liberal allies from Hollywood to Silicon Valley to Wall Street claim that the goal of the treaty was to reduce so-called greenhouse gasses, its effect was to produce a massive wealth transfer from American workers to foreigners and wealthy investors. And the end of that wealth transfer is what drives the howls emanating from Wall Street and Silicon Valley. For example, according to The Los Angeles Times, Obama crony Elon Musk received some $4.9 billion in taxpayer subsidies for Tesla, SolarCity and SpaceX. Our friends at the Taxpayers Protection Alliance (TPA) claim that, “American taxpayers spent an average of $39 billion a year over the past 5 years financing grants, subsidizing tax credits, guaranteeing loans, bailing out failed solar energy boondoggles.” According to one estimate by the Los Angeles Times, state and federal subsidies to Musk’s SolarCity have eclipsed the $1.5 billion mark. Meanwhile, less than one percent of the…

She is widely recognized as one of the key state legislators who led the efforts to defeat the state income tax in the three years between 1999 and 2002 when then Gov. Don Sundquist, a Republican, attempted to push the tax through the Tennessee General Assembly. One of the first elected officials in Tennessee to publicly endorse Donald Trump, Beavers was elected as an at-large statewide delegate to the Republican National Convention committed to Donald Trump during the 2016 election. Beavers will become the third candidate to formally announce a run for the Republican Gubernatorial nomination.
