‘We Wuz Robbed, Bless Your Heart’

Tennessee Star

Commentary by Steve Gill   Nashville has a lot to be proud of in the wake of the historic Stanley Cup Final run by the Predators: The class and skill of a team on the rise that promises to be back stronger and better next year. City officials who handled incredible crowds with efficiency and flexibility, especially when combined with the crowd control nightmare of CMA Fest colliding with a Stanley Cup Final all in a several block radius. Fans who fully embraced a sport that many were still learning and players they had never heard of when the playoff run began. Nashville’s reputation as an “it” town was already firmly in place before, but it is more “it” than ever in the view of hockey and sports media types who had never given Nashville more than a passing glance in the past. Terms like “Smashville” and “Prednecks,” and the visuals of catfish on ice, are now a part of NHL lore. But what Nashville can perhaps most be proud of is cementing our reputation as a place where Southern Hospitality is still a “thing.” Yes, there was some booing of the winning Penguins as they hoisted the Stanley Cup.…

Report: State Senator Mark Norris On President Trump’s Shortlist for Possible Federal Judgeship

Tennessee Star

The Trump Administration is building a solid record strong appointments and nominees for the some 4,000 positions every new President must fill. In addition to those, the Administration is moving forward to seat a number of judgeships – the ones President Obama and his team were not able to pack with far-left ideologues. The Times Free Press is reporting State Senator and Majority Leader Mark Norris (R- Collierville) is in the process of being vetted for one of those positions: Two Republican sources said FBI agents had asked them about Norris as part of the customary background check for federal judicial nominations. And a former state legislator said two local law enforcement chiefs in his former West Tennessee district told him they had been contacted about Norris as well. It’s unclear whether any other attorneys are undergoing background checks for the two vacant federal judgeships in the Western District. In January, the Memphis Flyer listed Norris among five attorneys who were being discussed in political circles in connection with the two vacancies — one created in 2015 when U.S. District Judge Hardy Mays took senior status and another earlier this year when U.S. District Judge Daniel Breen did the…

Mark Pody Announces Candidacy for State Senate Seat Mae Beavers Is Leaving to Run for Governor

Tennessee Star

State Rep. Mark Pody (R-Lebanon) announced today that he is a candidate for the State Senate seat that Mae Beavers (R-Mt. Juliet) is leaving to run for the Republican nomination for governor in 2018. “I want to officially announce that I am a candidate for the 17th Senatorial District in the state of Tennessee,” Pody told The Tennessee Star in an exclusive interview. “Senator Mae Beavers is going to be running for governor, and she’s going to make an awesome conservative governor. That leaves her seat open, and I want to make sure that seat is filled by a good conservative individual. I want to run for that seat,” Pody added.   “Here are the reasons why I think that this is important,” he said. “First, we have to have somebody watching our money. And I promise you this is taxpayer money, it is not government money. I’m going to be watching how we spend that money. We want to make sure that we only spend it on the limited things that government is supposed to do,” he continued. “Government is not something for every single idea. Just because it’s a good idea doesn’t make it a government idea,”…

Haslam’s Muslim Advisory Council Wants Deportable Aliens to Stay in Tennessee

Tennessee Star

Tennessee’s American Muslim Advisory Council (AMAC) is objecting to certain Iraqi and Kurdish nationals living in Nashville being detained by ICE based on probable cause for deportation. AMAC has claimed that: All week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents have been targeting and harassing Nashville’s Iraqi and Kurdish community members at their homes, on the road, and even at their workplaces, and all without a warrant to show. AMAC board member and spokesman Drost Kokoye acknowledges that some of the ICE detainees have criminal records and some may have overstayed their visas; either violation makes them a priority for deportation. AMAC, which grew out of a project sponsored by the TN Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC), was organized in 2011, to oppose anti-terrorism legislation passed by the Tennessee state legislature in response to the jihad perpetrated by Carlos Bledsoe, aka, Abdulhakim Mohammed. After the legislative session concluded, a picture was published showing the group that formed AMAC, receiving direct support and assistance from Tennessee’s Department of Safety and Homeland Security. A November 2011 letter signed by then Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security Bill Gibbons stated: On behalf of the State of Tennessee and the Department of Safety and Homeland Security, I thank and…

Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican: ‘I Want to Hear From Loretta Lynch’

Sen. Lindsey Graham told CBS’ “Face the Nation” on Sunday that he wants to hear from former Attorney General Loretta Lynch following ousted FBI director James Comey’s testimony last week that she requested he call the investigation of Hillary Clinton’s email a “matter.” “I want to hear from Loretta Lynch,” said Mr. Graham, South Carolina Republican…

James Comey: The Incredible Shrinking Man

By George Rasley, ConservativeHQ.com Editor James Comey, the towering six-foot-eight-inch figure who fancied himself as Washington’s last honest man, testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee yesterday, and the longer he talked the smaller he became. His testimony, which was supposed to bring down a President, revealed instead a small-minded bureaucrat with delusions of grandeur who was loyal neither to the President at whose pleasure he served nor to the Constitution he once swore to uphold. Instead of loyalty to constitutional principles or the law, Comey was revealed to be loyal only to his own outsized sense of entitlement to hold on to power. At the end of a day that was supposed to be full of high drama, what the world saw was a little man who did nothing but feel “queasy” when Obama’s Attorney General Lorretta Lynch directed him to align his language about the Clinton email investigation with that of the Hillary Clinton for President campaign. Perhaps the moment that most completely summed-up James Comey’s disgraceful tenure as Director of the FBI was this exchange with Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida: RUBIO: At the time did you say anything to the president about that [the Flynn…

Six Potential Challengers to Bob Corker in the 2018 Tennessee U.S. Senate Republican Primary

Tennessee Star

With the new Tennessee Star polling data revealing significant vulnerabilities for Senator Bob Corker among likely Republican Primary voters, the speculation about potential opponents who may seek to exploit those vulnerabilities has increased dramatically. (Regardless of how many think about it, if more than one conservative challenger actually gets in the race they give it to Corker. And a successful race will almost certainly require a minimum of $7 million.) Who are these potential challengers? In alphabetical order: Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn. Topping the wish list of many Tennessee conservatives is the Representative from Middle Tennessee’s 7th District. Having represented a wide swath of West Tennessee before redistricting she has a significant base of support in both Middle and West Tennessee, which was reflected in the cross tabs in The Tennessee Star Poll head-to-head poll with Corker. Blackburn won the Middle portion of the state outside the margin of error (43-38) and beat Corker handily in West Tennessee (49-36). Statewide the two were within the margin of error with Corker edging Blackburn 41-39. A Tennessean story that was widely repeated across the state and country reported that Blackburn has indicated that she will NOT run for the Senate in 2018.…

Faith: Verse of the Day for Tuesday, June 12

Tennessee Star - Verse of the Day

VERSE OF THE DAY Be blessed and be a blessing June 12, Monday Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
