New Website Launches for Military Veterans to Apply for Florida Teaching Jobs

Gov. Ron DeSantis is encouraging military veterans interested in teaching at Florida public schools to consider applying through a new program.

“Florida is leading the way by bringing some of the best, the brightest and the bravest among us into our classrooms through a new program that helps military veterans become teachers,” he said in a video announcement Thursday. “If you served in the military for at least four years, were honorably discharged, have taken 60 college credits, and pass a subject area exam, we want you to be able to teach Florida students.

ICE Officially Considers Military Service When Deciding to Deport Non-Citizen Vets and Families

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced Tuesday that it will officially consider migrants’ US military service before deciding whether to enforce civil immigration actions, such as deportation, against them or their family members.

While ICE has previously recognized US military service as a mitigating factor, the Biden administration’s directive makes consideration of US military service an official agency policy. The department will take into account the non-citizen US veteran’s type of discharge, length of service, and other related factors before deciding to take action against an illegal immigrant and their immediate family members.

Maricopa County Attorney’s Office Launches Veterans’ Diversion Program

The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office is launching a new pre-trial diversion program for military veterans. 

The Veterans’ Diversion Program, which begins on April 4, 2022, aims to provide evidence-based services and treatment to some veterans before a conviction.

The County Attorney’s Office notes that some veterans have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and cannot access treatment. The office notes that this can result in domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse, mental health disorders, and suicide. 

The Veterans’ Diversion Program will try to identify and treat those issues, according to a press release issued on Wednesday this week. A veteran who completes the program can have their charges dismissed.

Charlie Daniels and The Journey Home Project Announce Pentagon Art Exhibit

Country music icon Charlie Daniels has opened an art gallery of combat and civilian photographs by veterans and their families at the Pentagon outside Washington, D.C. The Journey Home Project (TJHP), a nonprofit founded by Daniels, teamed up with the Rich Poverty organization to create the new art exhibit called The Alliance Collection. This collection displays photos from over 50 veteran artists from around the world. “It’s a real honor to do anything that benefits our heroes in the military, and to be a part of something displayed in the Pentagon makes it even more special,” Daniels said. The exhibit will be on display through March 2020 and is free to the public for viewing while touring the Pentagon. The collection of photos features a wide range of military history. Photos displayed range from World War II to the present day. The Alliance Collection has contributions from across the world, including photos from veterans from Belgium, Canada, Germany and the Netherlands. “Each corridor of the Pentagon has displays of our nation’s military history,” said TJHP board member Major General Terry “Max” Haston (retired). “These professionally designed exhibits reflect the factual lineage of our services.
