Rep. Anna Paulina Luna Asks Rep. Mark Green to Join Speaker Race

Florida U.S. Representative Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL-13) announced her intent to ask Tennessee U.S. Representative Mark Green (R-TN-07) to launch a bid for Speaker of the House.

“This morning I voted for Rep Donalds for Speaker. Followed by Rep Johnson. Rep Emmer does not have votes to be speaker and I will be unable to support him on the floor. So, I’m going to ask Rep. Mark Green to throw his hat in the ring,” Luna wrote in a tweet. “We need to get a speaker!”

Luna also said Oklahoma U.S. Representative Kevin Hern (R-OK-01) would make a good candidate for speaker.

Luna’s comment comes after the House GOP Conference voted on Tuesday to nominate House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN-06) as the conference’s nominee for House Speaker out of the nine lawmakers who launched a bid for the position.

Last week, the House GOP conference voted via secret ballot in a closed-door meeting to remove Ohio U.S. Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH-04) as speaker-designate after he lost three rounds of voting for the position.

Shortly after Jordan’s removal, Green announced he would not seek to be the next Speaker amid speculation surrounding his potential bid.

“After prayerful consideration, and incredible gratitude for my colleagues who’ve asked me to run, Camie and I have decided not to seek the position of Speaker of the House,” Green said in a statement, as previously reported by The Tennessee Star.

“I have unfinished business as Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security and in my ultimate mission of defending Tennesseans against an overreaching federal government. I look forward to helping whoever we nominate to unite this conference and advance freedom for every American,” Green added.
