Gubernatorial Candidate Mae Beavers Promises to Sign Constitutional Carry Bill, If Elected, at Wilson County GOP’s Annual Picnic

LEBANON, Tennessee–On Saturday  gubernatorial candidate State Senator Mae Beavers (R-Mt. Juliet) told the crowd at Wilson County Republican Party’s Annual Picnic, “I will promise you one thing. If constitutional carry passes, I will sign that legislation as governor.” “And not only that. I will work to get it through the House and Senate if I am elected,” Beavers, the featured speaker at the annual Wilson County event, said. About 150 people braved the 90 degree plus heat to listen to Beavers and several other Wilson County Republican elected officials at the annual event, held this year at the farm of Ken Nelson, Jr. in Lebanon.   Beavers has represented the citizens of Wilson County, first on the County Commission, then in the House of Representatives, and now in the State Senate, since 1992. None of the other announced gubernatorial candidates–Williamson County businessman Bill Lee, Knoxville businessman Randy Boyd, or Tennessee Speaker of the House Beth Harwell (R-Nashville) were in attendance, so Beavers had her home county crowd all to herself. Beavers did not disappoint the conservatives in attendance. She promised that if elected, she will work to repeal the recent gas tax increase and will sign a constitutional carry bill.…

Congressional Candidate Judd Matheny Hands Out 2,500 Pencils and Book Marks at Putnam County Back to School Bash

State Rep. Judd Matheny (R-Tullahoma) keeps running hard to win the Republican nomination in the Sixth Congressional District. On Friday he was at the Putnam County Back to School Bash, where he handed out over 2,500 pencils and book marks to parents and school children from his booth at the Putnam County Fairgrounds. “This was such a great event,” Matheny told The Tennessee Star. “Lots of kids socializing, eating ice cream and stuffing their bags with back to school supplies,” he added. “Over a dozen area elementary and middle schools were present, as well as their respective teachers and many other community volunteers. It was a fantastic place to reacquaint myself with old friends and meet new ones” Matheny noted. So far, Matheny is the only candidate of either party to announce his candidacy for the Sixth Congressional District nomination. Rep. Diane Black (R-TN-06) has not announced whether she will seek re-election to her current position. It is widely expected that she will announce her candidacy for governor soon. Matheny made news last month when he helped organize a letter from 63 members of the Tennessee House of Representatives advising the Nashville Metro Council that they were strongly opposed to…

Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau A Menace to Taxpayers, Commissioner Says

By Christ Butler The folks who run the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau spend taxpayer money like high rollers, yet no policy exists to reign them in, Hamilton County Commissioner Tim Boyd said. The CVB is a nonprofit that gets most of its money, about $8.2 million this year alone, from the county’s 4 percent hotel and motel tax. Boyd said he has a two-inch thick binder full of the CVB’s credit card statements from the past several years. Those statements, Boyd said, reveal CVB members bought top-shelf booze and considered it a “business expense.” CVB employees traveled to a Utah ski resort at taxpayer expense. They also awarded six-figure checks to advertising firms without a formal bidding process, meaning the CVB likely spent more than it should have, Boyd said. Those are only a few of the things Boyd said he uncovered. Tennessee Watchdog can’t corroborate the contents of that binder because Boyd and CVB President Bob Doak said those documents aren’t public record — despite taxpayer money paying for most of what’s on it. But Boyd said that, legally, he can discuss what he knows with the public. He said he plans to share more details next week.…

Commentary: Stop Diverting Our Defense Dollars To Sex Change Surgery

by ConservativeHQ.com Staff Last week, the House of Representatives passed the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2018 (“NDAA”) without incorporating a policy that ensures that limited military resources are not be used for sex-reassignment surgery and other gender transition efforts for service members. Next week, the House will vote on the Make America Secure Appropriations Act, which will provide a large increase in funding for the Department of Defense. Our friends at the Family Research Council have asked us to join them in encouraging conservative activists across the country to contact their Representatives to demand that they stop diverting our defense dollars to Bradley Chelsea Manning sex change surgery. Taxpayer dollars need to be protected from funding non-essential sex-change surgery and hormone therapy efforts intended to change a person’s gender. Estimates for these efforts, including the amount of time lost for the transition process, are about $3.7 billion over the next ten years. This is an irresponsible use of taxpayer funds. With the costs estimated for sex-reassignment surgery and hormones, the military could purchase twenty-two F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Planes, which cost $166.7 million each, or 116 Chinook Helicopters, which cost $31.8 million each, or 3,700 Tomahawk missiles,…

Obamacare Repeal And Donald Trump’s September 2015 Remarks

Tennessee Star

ConservativeHQ.com Staff July 23, 2017 September 2015 seems like an eon ago – and politically it is. Back then Donald Trump was the outsider candidate who didn’t have a prayer of winning the Republican nomination for President, never mind beating Hillary Clinton and winning the White House. Trump confounded all the naysayers, and truth be told he did it with one very simple campaign theme, “We are led by very, very stupid people.” Repeal ObamacareThe Washington establishment was outraged when Donald Trump called them “stupid,” but voters across the heartland were energized and reassured that someone running for president was willing to say what they had been thinking for a good long time. What’s more, Trump’s remark was an equal opportunity trashing of the Washington elite. He didn’t limit the universe of stupid people to just Democrats, establishment Republicans were very clearly included. Fast forward to Inauguration Day 2017 – Trump was sworn-in, and as our friend Cathy put it, “We were filled with such optimism on Inauguration Day. Little did we expect the treachery lurking in the Swamp before it could be drained.” The Swamp, the establishment, the DC status quo decided that if Trump and his conservative –…

British Death Panel Unmoved As House Grants Charlie Gard U.S. Legal Permanent Residence

by ConservativeHQ.com Staff   The worldwide effort to save disabled British baby Charlie Gard from Britain’s Great Ormand Street hospital death panel achieved a small victory yesterday as the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment granting Charlie and his family legal permanent residence in the United States. News of the passage of the amendment came from Rep. Jeff Fortenberry, who tweeted: “We just passed amendment that grants permanent resident status to #CharlieGard and family so Charlie can get the medical treatment he needs.” However, British legal sources said Charlie is the subject of a High Court order and it made no difference what passport he held. And last Friday, the judge made it clear it would be illegal for Charlie to travel to America without his permission reports the U.K. Daily Mail. The parents’ British attorney, Grant Armstrong, said the parents were of the view that legally it was up to the hospital to change its mind and allow Charlie to be transferred. But the judge, Mr. Justice Francis, said the effect of the various rulings meant the court’s permission was required. “It would be entirely wrong for him to be transferred without my being involved,” said the judge,…

The Battle for Nashville Begins: Tim Herndon Takes on Liberal Establishment in 33rd Metro Council District Special Election

NASHVILLE, Tennessee–About a dozen volunteers gathered on Saturday morning at the Travel America center in Antioch to begin a day of door knocking for Tim Herndon, the conservative candidate in the special election to pick a new Metro Council member from Davidson County/Nashville’s 33rd District that will be held on August 15. The special election will be the first test of public opinion in Davidson County and Nashville since the Metro Council sponsors of a sanctuary city ordinance withdrew their proposal in late June, barely a week before it was scheduled for a third and final reading. The ordinance passed on a second reading June 20 by a 25 to 8 vote, with 4 members abstaining, and 2 members not voting, but without a vote cast by a council member representing the 33rd district, since that seat has been vacant since May, when the incumbent, Sam Coleman, accepted an appointment as a judge. The special election will be held on August 15. Early voting runs from July 26 to August 10. At full strength there are 40 members of the Metro Council-5 are elected at large, and 35 are elected by Council District. A recent Tennessee Star Poll showed that,…
