Commentary: What’s Wrong With Local Control of Land?

By Printus LeBlanc   On Monday, President Trump traveled to Utah and signed two proclamations giving control of large portions of Bears Ears and the Grand Staircase-Escalante Monuments back to the people of Utah and Nevada. However, the mainstream media acted like President Trump kicked a puppy on live TV. The President did nothing more than address a significant issue facing states west of Texas and let them oversee some of the land they live on. Utah Senator Mike Lee was in favor of the President Trump’s move stating, “President Trump did the people of Utah a great favor today by rolling back harmful land use restrictions in southern Utah.” Lee knows what most people in western states believe; they are the best stewards of the lands they live on, not a Washington bureaucrat. The Antiquities Act of 1906 was signed into law by President Theodore Roosevelt on June 8, 1906. The law gave the sitting President the authority to create national monuments from federal lands. The act has been controversial, particularly in states west of Texas. When Jimmy Carter designated several monuments in Alaska in 1978, thousands of protesters burned Carter in effigy. No President used the act more…

UT Martin Student Government Association Passes Campus Concealed Carry Resolution

The University of Tennessee at Martin Student Government Association passed a controversial concealed carry resolution Thursday night in a 17 to 10 vote of the Student Senate. Titled “A Resolution to Allow Students to Lawfully Carry Concealed Weapons at the University of Tennessee at Martin,” the resolution was at the center of campus controversy last month that involved a threatening letter to its supporters written anonymously by a UT Martin faculty member. On November 3, The Tennessee Star reported that “Officials at the University of Tennessee at Martin confirmed . . . on Friday that a faculty member has been placed on leave for writing a threatening letter to the student sponsors of a controversial Student Government Association resolution that would allow students to have constitutional concealed carry privileges on campus, pending the passage of enabling state legislation.” Later that same day, “The chancellor of the University of Tennessee at Martin issued a statement late Friday identifying Dr. Charles Bradshaw, associate professor of English, as the author of an anonymous letter that contained threats of violence against the student sponsors of a Student Government Association resolution to allow students concealed carry privileges on campus,” The Star reported. Four days later,…

Faith: Verse of the Day for Sunday, December 10

Tennessee Star - Verse of the Day

VERSE OF THE DAY Be blessed and be a blessing December 10, Sunday Luke 1:26-38 Six months after Elizabeth had become pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee. 27 The angel went to a virgin promised in marriage to a descendant of David named Joseph. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 When the angel entered her home, he greeted her and said, “You are favored by the Lord! The Lord is with you.” 29 She was startled by what the angel said and tried to figure out what this greeting meant. 30 The angel told her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. You have found favor with God. 31 You will become pregnant, give birth to a son, and name him Jesus. 32 He will be a great man and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 Your son will be king of Jacob’s people forever, and his kingdom will never end.” 34 Mary asked the angel, “How can this be? I’m a virgin.” 35 The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come to you, and the power of the Most High will…

President Trump Holds Raucous Campaign-Style Rally in Pensacola

President Trump delighted a packed crowd in Pensacola with a signature Make America Great campaign-style rally. Speaking for nearly an hour and a half, the President hit on every one of his campaign themes: the Wall, the Rigged System, the Forgotten Men and Women (no more!), Prosperity, Jobs, American unity, Fake News, divisive Democrats, and at about the forty minute mark, the critical importance of Alabamans casting their vote in the special election Tues (Dec 12) for Judge Roy Moore.

Mae Beavers Applauds President Trump’s Decision to Recognize Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel

From her campaign headquarters in Mount Juliet, former State Senator and gubernatorial candidate Mae Beavers delivered a powerful statement in favor of President Trump’s announcement that the United States will officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. I am proud to support President Trump’s historic decision to put U.S. law, passed overwhelmingly in 1995, into effect by moving our Embassy in Israel to the capital in Jerusalem. The status quo has NOT produced peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis, and President Trump is absolutely correct to move forward with what has been U.S. policy — at least on paper — for 22 years. If the Palestinians and their terrorist supporters react with violence, as they have threatened to do, that will simply confirm that they have no real interest in a peaceful solution to the divisions in that region. It will prove that they simply want to dictate terms beneficial only to them rather than being part of a resolution that can produce peaceful coexistence with Israel. I am happy to stand with President Trump and Israel as we prepare to move our embassy to the rightful capital of Israel. National security is a Tennessee security issue. We cannot…

Phil Bredesen Hit Over ‘Record of Covering Up Sexual Assault Allegations’ One Day After Announcing Senate Campaign

Phil Bredesen

Just hours after announcing his candidacy for the U.S. Senate, claims of cover ups of sexual assault allegations have resurfaced against former Gov. Phil Bredesen, the front-runner for the Democratic nomination for the 2018 Senate seat being vacated by retiring incumbent Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN). While two major national press organizations published major investigative stories that Bredesen has a “record of covering up sexual assault allegations,” the dominant local news media outlets in Tennessee, the newspapers that make up the USA Today-Tennessee group, apparently made no mention of it on Friday. Bredesen is facing withering criticism over his handling of sexual assault investigations that were conducted of top officials in his administration while he was Governor of Tennessee, according to a Washington Free Beacon article on Friday, “Top Dem in Tennessee Senate Race Has Record of Covering Up Sexual Assault Allegations: As governor, Phil Bredesen’s office covered up details of harassment allegations against top officials,” which reported: Tennessee Democrat Phil Bredesen, a top party recruit who announced his Senate campaign on Thursday morning, was criticized for hiding details of sexual assault investigations into his top officials during his tenure as the state’s governor. The campaign announcement by Bredesen, who was Tennessee’s governor from…

Lee Thomas Miller, GOP 7th Congressional District Candidate, Strongly Supports President Trump’s Decision to Recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital

Conservative Republican songwriter Lee Thomas Miller, a candidate for the Seventh Congressional District GOP nomination, issued a statement of strong support Friday for President Trump’s announcement that the United States will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and that the U.S. embassy will be relocated to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv: As President Trump said in making the announcement, failing to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has not led to lasting peace in the region. The Trump Administration action is consistent with current U.S. law and reaffirms what we already know: Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people and Israel for thousands of years in every way but modern political designation. I support President Trump’s decision and applaud him for his courage and for keeping his often repeated campaign promise to do exactly what he has done. I am proud to stand with him and Israel, which remains our strongest ally in the region. President Trump also noted in his historic announcement that The Jerusalem Embassy Act was passed in Congress by an overwhelming bipartisan majority. In the Senate, the bill passed on Oct. 24, 1995, by a 93-5 margin. Later that day, the House followed suit,…

7th Congressional District GOP Candidate Mark Green Signs Term Limits and Taxpayer Protection Pledges

In his latest move to replace outgoing Representative Marsha Blackburn (R-TN-07), State Senator Mark Green (R-Clarksville) has signed two pledges many conservative and Republican voters look to when evaluating a candidate for office. Today, Dr. Mark Green announced he has signed both the U.S. Term Limits Pledge as well as the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. A part-time citizen legislator, Green has consistently fought against both career politicians and tax increases. “I am proud to have championed both term limits and lower taxes in Tennessee, and will continue to fight for both if elected to Congress,” stated Green. “President Trump is right–Washington, D.C. is a swamp, and we need term limits to drain it. My pledge to Tennesseans is I will continue to be a citizen legislator and fight against any tax increase on them.” In the State Senate, Green has won numerous recognition for his efforts on behalf of Tennessee taxpayers, including the Tax Foundation’s Outstanding Achievement in State Tax Reform award, National Federation of Independent Businesses’ Guardian of Small Business award and the ACU Conservative award from the American Conservative Union. Green faces songwriter Lee Thomas Miller in the August 2018 Republican primary to become the party’s nominee in the…

Commentary: Roy Moore’s Elitist Critics Prove Elections Have Consequences

by Jeffrey A. Rendall   Integrity; it’s a fleeting concept. The dictionary defines integrity as, “possession of firm principles – the quality of possessing and steadfastly adhering to high moral principles or professional standards,” and, “completeness– the state of being complete or undivided (as in territory),” and, “wholeness – the state of being sound or undamaged.” It’s the first and third descriptions we need to focus on here, as establishment-to-the-core Arizona Senator Jeff Flake did something earlier this week to prove he possesses neither principles nor wholeness — and therefore has no integrity. The “retiring” Grand Canyon State pol tweeted out a picture of a $100 check to Alabama Democrat Doug Jones on Tuesday with the title “Country over Party.” It doesn’t require much deep contemplation to figure out what Flake was trying to accomplish with his social media outburst, but we’ll offer an explanation anyway. He was one, showing he’s cheap – come on, Jeff, a hundred bucks for “country”?, two, demonstrating he’s a card-carrying member of the Washington swamp that is cowering in fear over the prospect of Judge Roy Moore coming to town; three, exposing himself as a bitter clinging idiot who judges from afar without any kind of deference to the opinions of Alabamians or conservatives who’ve known Moore for years and…

In an open-letter style statement, Cepicky said: As most of you know by now, State Representative Sheila Butt will not be seeking re-election in 2018. Her passion and enthusiasm for the belief in Faith, Family and Freedom has endeared her to the citizens of our county. Today, after much prayer and thoughtful consideration, and with advice from family and friends, I hereby announce my intention to seek the nomination of the Republican Party for the position of State Representative for the 64th District. I will pick up the mantle of Faith, Family and Freedom and continue to move our county forward. I appreciate the support of Representative Butt, and her team in this endeavor. As many as four varsity basketball players have been suspended following what is described as a ‘locker room incident’ at the prestigious private Christian school, Brentwood Academy, WSMV reports. Although the school is not sharing any details about what took place, it was serious enough to warrant the cancellation of last Friday’s game. School spokesperson Susan Shafer issued the following statement: Last week, a number of students failed to meet the high expectations we have for them at Brentwood Academy. As a result, the students involved have been disciplined. When the school became aware of an incident on last Thursday, we immediately addressed the issue with students involved and their parents. While Brentwood Academy has been transparent about its disciplinary procedures with the students and parents involved, we are committed to protecting the privacy of our students and families. We are not going to elaborate further on student discipline. Other news outlets have said that among those suspended is senior starter, point guard Darius Garland. According to 247Sports, Garland is a 5-star player whose skills have ranked him No. 13 overall of college recruits. He is ranked as the No. 3 point guard, and is the No. 1 player from the state of Tennessee in his 2018…

Mark West Responds to Tea Party and Liberty Movement Pushback over His Endorsement of Diane Black for Governor

After careful consideration over the course of several months, Chattanooga Tea Party Founder and President Mark West decided to endorse Rep. Diane Black (R-TN-06) in her bid for governor, as The Tennessee Star reported on Wednesday. An experienced activist, West was an early organizer of the Tea Party rallies in 2009 with his founding of the Chattanooga Tea Party. For nearly a decade, he has poured his time, talent and personal resources into critical efforts to promote politicians and policies that live up to his high standard of constitutional muster. West has won more political battles than he’s lost and along the way, has emerged as one of Tennessee’s most respected leaders of the Liberty movement. He expected some pushback from factions among his friends and allies in Tennessee’s conservative grassroots community for his endorsement of Rep. Black. But when some strident “keyboard warriors” began to attack Rep. Black’s stance on the sanctity of life, West decided to respond via a semi-private Facebook channel. With his permission, we publish his full remarks, here: Following my endorsement of Diane Black for Governor, there has been a harsh response from some. The personal attacks are fine. Sadly, I’ve come to realize that’s the norm from…

GOP State Rep. Candidate Tommy Vallejos Marched With Open Border Groups Demanding Amnesty for Illegal Aliens

Tommy Vallejos, a Montgomery County Commissioner and GOP candidate for Tennessee’s District 67 State House seat currently held by retiring State Rep. Joe Pitts (D-Clarksville), has been an advocate for both legal and illegal aliens in Tennessee. Vallejos is the founder and current Chairman of Latinos for Tennessee (L4TN) and former Director for Hispanic Organization for Progress & Education (HOPE), a position he held for almost five years but which is not referenced on his campaign’s website. Pitts’ wife Cynthia served on HOPE’s board during Vallejos’ tenure as director. While leading HOPE, Vallejos joined Soros-backed open border groups including the Tennessee Immigrant & Refugee Rights Coalition (TIRRC) in the 2010 D.C. march organized by the National Immigration Forum. Rally-goers were demanding comprehensive immigration reform that along with border security, would include an amnesty and path to citizenship for illegal aliens. U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez, considered Congress’ most radical open borders advocate for illegal aliens, was the rally’s keynote speaker. Today, Vallejos tells The Tennessee Star that “I have never been for amnesty, but felt our immigration system was broken (still is) and needed reform.” As a recognized leader of the Latino community, Vallejos who described himself as a “staunch Republican,” opposed a 2006…

Former Tennessee Congressman Harold Ford, Jr was summarily dismissed from his position at a Managing Director at the investment firm Morgan Stanley amid an internal investigation by its Human Resource department, the Huffington Post reports. In an email to the progressive news and opinion giant, a Morgan Stanley spokesperson wrote, “He has been terminated for conduct inconsistent with our values and in violation of our policies.” At issue is an allegation by a woman Morgan Stanley says is not an employee, but interfaces with Ford in a professional capacity. She alleges he forcibly grabbed her and subsequently harassed her for a date. For his part, Ford denies the claim, saying in a statement via Twitter, “I support and have tremendous respect for the brave women now speaking out in this important national dialogue. False claims like this though undermine the real silence breakers.” The Huffington Post has interviewed the woman at the center of the allegation, and have agreed to keep her identity private: In two interviews with HuffPost, the woman alleged that Ford engaged in harassment, intimidation, and forcibly grabbed her one evening in Manhattan, leading her to seek aid from a building security guard. Commentary: Reflecting on Our Bill of Rights

Regardless of personal political persuasion or affiliation, American citizens can unite around the Bill of Rights because it communicates our basic shared values. Limiting the power of government and safeguarding the rights of our citizens is something we must all make a conscientious effort to protect. We should be especially appreciative for the protection afforded in our Bill of Rights against a national government gaining ground against our most fundamental rights—freedom of speech, protest, and conscience guarantees our equal protection under the law. A free society does not just occur. Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom.

OFF THE RECORD: Democrats Hope ‘Pajama Gramp’ Bredesen Will Do Better in Tennessee Than ‘Pajama Boy’ Ossoff Did in Georgia

The Democratic National Committee and liberals in Washington, D.C., New York City, and San Francisco are hoping that “Pajama Gramp” Phil Bredesen will do better in the 2018 U.S. Senate race here in Tennessee than “Pajama Boy” Jon Ossoff did in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District special election back in June. You may recall that the 30-year-old Ossoff raised well over $30 million from the liberal coastal bastions in an unsuccessful attempt to take the seat long held by Republicans away from GOP nominee Karen Handel. Though Handel was outspent by about 6 to 1, the Democratic strategy in Georgia failed miserably, as she defeated “Pajama Boy” Ossoff by a comfortable five point margin. Democrats are attempting to deploy that same out-of-state funding strategy in the Alabama special U.S. Senate election next Tuesday in which far left liberal Democrat Doug Jones seeks to defeat conservative Republican Roy Moore. They’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink at Moore — almost all the money supporting Jones’ campaign comes from out of state and some very shady money is coming in to a shell independent expenditure group that appears to be financed to the tune of $3.4 million on in-kind contributions from Washington,…

Phil Bredesen Is a Big Supporter of ‘Mayor Moonbeam’ Megan Barry’s $5.4 Billion Mass Transit Boondoggle

Former Gov. Phil Bredesen, who announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) on Thursday, is a big supporter of “Mayor Moonbeam” Megan Barry’s $5.4 billion and growing mass transit boondoggle. Bredesen showed his support for the massive deal by sitting next to Barry when she announced the scheme back in October (at the time supposed to cost just $5.2 billion, according to the mayor). Barry recognized Bredesen at the announcement as having “the insight to know that an investment in infrastructure changes the city’s trajectory and changes it for decades.” “You started with the structure of the arena, then you followed it with a stadium. Go Titans. Yes. What followed from that was a city full of people, a city full of energy and a whole lot of Predators fans,” Barry said of Bredesen. It was under then-Mayor Bredesen’s term that Nissan Stadium (previously LP Field) was constructed at a cost that exceeded $291 million, $207 million or 71 percent of which came from taxpayers. The public funding came from allocations of city sales tax and other tax revenues as well as state bonds. Taxpayers are still paying those debts today,…

Low Energy Phil Bredesen Announces Candidacy for U.S. Senate Via YouTube Video

Seventy-four year old former Gov. Phil Bredesen announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat in Tennessee currently held by retiring Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) in a remarkably low energy two and a half minute video released on YouTube Thursday morning. Wearing a green, white, and yellow plaid shirt covered by a black and brown vest, Bredesen sat in a rocking chair on the porch of an expansive residence and delivered a somewhat sleepy message telling Tennesseans why he should be their next senator. It was a remarkably outdated approach, reminiscent of the failed “low energy” delivery that doomed the 2016 Presidential campaign of former Florida governor Jeb Bush. You can watch the full announcement here:   “I’m Phil Bredesen. I’m running for the U.S. Senate, and I want to tell you why,” Bredesen began. “We all know Washington is broken. But while politicians are up there playing partisan games and working on their re-election, out here in America, back here in Tennessee, we have some real problems.” Though he touched on the “partisan games” being played in Washington, Bredesen failed to note that he was a big financial backer of one of the most partisan…

Bredesen’s $200 Million TNInvestco Boondoggle Hangs Over His Expected Announcement of U.S. Senate Run

Former Gov. Phil Bredesen’s TNInvestco program, which he promoted in 2009 as a sure fire job and revenue generator for the State of Tennessee, has been a complete financial and economic debacle, the Tennessee Comptroller reported in 2016: A performance audit from the Tennessee Comptroller’s Office has revealed the State of Tennessee has only recovered $5.3 million of its initial $200 million investment in the TNInvestco program. The TNInvestco program, which started in 2009 and 2010, is described as a public-private venture capital program intended to help start-up companies create jobs and for the state to eventually receive a return on its investment. As of December 31, 2015, the State of Tennessee has only received 2.6% of the initial investment The failure of TNInvestco is one topic Bredesen is not likely to highlight when he announces his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat in the near future, possibly as soon as today. The program can best be described as a crony capitalist disaster. The scheme devised by Bredesen was formally known as “The Tennessee Small Business Investment Company Credit Act, commonly known as TNInvestco, [which he] signed into law in July 2009,” The Tennessee Ledger noted: Under the law, ten local investment…

State Rep. Sheila Butt Will Not Run for Re-Election in 2018

Sheila Butt

In what was considered a bit of a surprise to her fellow Republicans and the Tennessee political community in general, State Rep. Sheila Butt (R-Columbia) announced Tuesday afternoon she will not run for re-election when her term ends in January 2019. Butt has been one of the most reliably conservative members of the Tennessee House of Representatives since her election in 2010. Republicans are now looking for someone of similar stature to hold the seat for the party, while Democrats believe that the seat–considered unwinnable for them as long as Butt was in office–might come into play again in 2018. Through a statement appearing in The Columbia Daily Herald, Butt said, “After much prayer and consideration, I will not be running for re-election for the next General Assembly which will convene in January of 2019.” Adding: Being a representative of the people was never intended by our Founding Fathers to be a profession, and was specifically designed to be a limited time of public service. As the year ends and January is approaching, I am looking forward to the second half of the 110th General Assembly beginning in 2018. It has truly been one of the highest honors in my life…

Commentary: Will the Supreme Court Uphold Slavery of Christians?

Jack Phillips

by George Rasley   Back in July of 2012 we told you about Jack Phillips, the baker-owner of Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood, Colorado refused to bake a wedding cake for a same-sex couple and ever since than radical homosexuals have been trying to drive him out of business. The same radical homosexuals that tried to run Jack Phillips out of business also filed a complaint against him with the Colorado Civil Rights Commission, where they were represented by the American Civil Liberties Union. Administrative law judge Robert N. Spence later found that Jack Phillips of Masterpiece Cake Shop violated the law when he refused to use his talent and creative energy in the service of homosexuals who wanted him to bake cakes to honor their supposed “marriages.” Administrative law judge Spence’s finding represented a new and frightening chapter in the Left’s war on Christians because there is a fundamental difference between merely selling, cookies, cakes, brownies and other goods, which Phillips was willing to do, and using your creative energies and talent in the service of something that violates your Christian beliefs. Were Jack Phillips an atheist and member of the creative elite, such as an artist or a writer…

Chattanooga Tea Party Founder and President Mark West Endorses Diane Black for Governor

Chattanooga Tea Party president and founder Mark West has endorsed Rep. Or do we want to join other states in going the way of liberal bastions like California,” West said in a statement emailed to The Tennessee Star, adding: Diane is a strong believer in the importance of protecting our God-given liberties. Protecting the rights of healthcare providers to keep their jobs when abortionists want to compel them to violate their consciences is just one example of her track record of fighting for us. In addition to the Conscience Protection Act, she’s a co-sponsor of Kate’s Law.
