Exclusive: Conservative Lawmakers’ Blueprint Would Trim Nondefense Spending, Balance Budget in 8 Years

by Rachel del Guidice   House conservatives propose to cut nondefense spending and balance the federal budget within eight years in a blueprint released Wednesday. The document produced by the Republican Study Committee, the largest caucus of GOP lawmakers in the House, includes a long list of policy goals such as repealing Obamacare, restoring power to states, making tax cuts “permanent,” reforming welfare programs, and “saving” Social Security and Medicare. The 169-page blueprint, called “A Framework for Unified Conservatism,” proposes to cut government spending by more than $12.4 trillion over the next 10 years, compared with current law. “I am very hopeful, when it comes to the legitimacy of this, if we are ever going to talk about the expectation of the federal government to live within its means, here’s the framework, this is the blueprint,” Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., chairman of the 150-member caucus, said Tuesday during a press briefing. [ The liberal Left continue to push their radical agenda against American values. The good news is there is a solution. Find out more ] “I don’t believe for one second that everything can be immediately instituted,” Walker told reporters, but “our job … is to put together some kind of blueprint, the framework…

Chappaquiddick Film Goes Deeper Than Politics

Chappaquiddick movie

by Ray Nothstine   It was nearly 50 years ago that an infamous incident finished off the hopes of returning another Kennedy brother to the White House. A film about “Chappaquiddick,” released this month, offers more than a historical retrospective. It reminds us of important truths that lay beneath the tumultuous world of political intrigue. The movie revisits the details: The late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy drove his car off the Dike Bridge on Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, resulting in the death of Mary Jo Kopechne, a 28-year-old political consultant who had worked on Robert Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign. Kopechne drowned – or, in the opinion of the diver who recovered her body, probably was trapped in an air pocket in the shallow water and later suffocated. In fact, there is a line in the film where the diver suggests he might have saved her if he had been notified in time. Kennedy, of course, escaped the car but did not report his involvement to authorities until after the scene was discovered by police 10 hours later. Over the decades since, plenty has been said particularly on the political right, about Kennedy’s direct involvement in the abandonment and death of Kopechne. Much of it…

Bezos-Owned Washington Post Omits Amazon’s Questionable Workplace Practices

By Natalia Castro   “Democracy dies in darkness.” This is the motto the Washington Post proudly proclaims as the guiding principle of their publication; unfortunately, if this is true, the Washington Post is an accomplice in the death of democracy. While pretending the defend journalistic integrity, the Post’s recent silence on issues regarding their parent company, Amazon, shed light on the real intentions behind their reporting. Amazon has been under fire for workforce abuse. James Bloodworth, an English writer, went undercover for six months working low wage jobs in the United Kingdom. One of this first jobs, as an Amon warehouse worker, a job he compared to a prison sentence. Bloodworth explained to Business Insider, “I’ve worked in warehouses before, but this was nothing like I had experienced. You don’t have proper breaks — by the time you get to the canteen, you only have 15 or 20 minutes for lunch, in a 10-1/2-hour working day. You don’t have time to eat properly to get a drink.” Alleging unfeasible productivity targets and strict oversight, Bloodworth explained that Amazon workers felt so much pressure to avoid bathroom breaks, they would routinely urinate in plastic bottles to avoid punishment. Bloodworth’s discoveries have only…

Report: The Endangered Species Act Doesn’t Work Because It Hammers Landowners With Draconian Regs

by Tim Pearce   The Endangered Species Act (ESA) may protect nearly every listed species from extinction, but the law’s recovery rate for threatened and endangered populations is dismal, so far. The Property and Environment Research Center (PERC) released a report Wednesday pointing out a severe shortfall of the ESA: only two percent of species listed under the law have been officially removed from the list as “recovered.” An April 16 study by The Heritage Foundation concluded the real recovery rate is closer to one percent. Proponents of the ESA, however, credit the law for keeping 99 percent of listed species from dying out, though that stat is based on the flawed assumption every listed species would go extinct without federal protection. Still, the ESA is much better at preventing an ailing species from getting worse rather than encouraging its growth. “Few species protected by [the ESA] have gone extinct. That’s reason for celebration,” PERC fellow Jonathan Wood, who authored the Wednesday report, wrote. “But … we want endangered species to recover as well. Achieving that goal, without sacrificing the law’s success at preventing extinction, requires reform that aligns the incentives of private landowners with the interests of rare species while maintaining regulatory protections for endangered species.”…

Tennessee General Assembly Passes Aggressive Anti-Sanctuary City Bill

State Sen Mark Green w State Rep Jay Reedy

Repeated efforts by House members to derail the anti-sanctuary city bill were unable to stop it from passing on a 64 – 23 vote. Bill sponsor Rep. Jay Reedy carefully explained that sanctuary policies are intended to obstruct cooperation with federal immigration authorities and that these policies protect people who have been arrested for committing a crime under Tennessee law and are then discovered to also be wanted by ICE. Reedy’s explanation did not stop Rep. Patsy Hazlewood from trying to persuade her colleagues not to support the bill. Hazlewood will have a Democrat challenger in the general election. Democrats in both the House and Senate spoke to wanting stronger laws to stop illegal aliens from working in Tennessee. Caucus Chairman Rep. Mike Stewart introduced an amendment that would criminalize employing illegal aliens and make it a Class E felony. In 2011, however, the U.S. Supreme Court held that states could only impose sanctions on employers through measures like revoking business licenses. Rep. Reedy invited Stewart to work with him next session on strengthening the state’s E-verify statute. Sen. Mark Green passed the Senate companion bill SB 2332, with a solid 23 -5 vote. “We’ve seen time and again that…

Nashville Fraternal Order of Police Deliver Blow to Briley Mayoral Campaign, Vote Not to Endorse Him

On Monday, the Nashville Fraternal Order of Police dealt a blow to the campaign of Acting Mayor David Briley, the front runner in the May 24 special mayoral election, when they decided not to endorse him. “The FOP Mayoral endorsement process has concluded. Our endorsement rules require that a candidate receive at least 50 percent of the total ballots returned, plus one, in their favor. Based on that information, none of the candidates running received the total needed to receive our endorsement,” the NFOP said in a statement released to its members. “Thank you for taking the time to participate in the voting process. If there shoud be a runoff vote, we will conduct another ballot at that time,” the statement continued. Briley finished in first place with 41 percent of the vote, well below the required 50 percent needed to obtain the NFOP’s endorsement. The NFOP endorsement vote percentage was virtually the same as the 43 percent support Briley received in a Tennessee Star Poll of the mayoral race released last Monday. As is the case with an NFOP endorsement, Briley will need to receive 50 percent of the vote in the May 24 special election to avoid a runoff…

Senate Confirms ‘the Neil Gorsuch of Louisiana’ to High-Ranking Federal Bench

by Tiffany Bates and Elizabeth Slattery   The Senate voted 50-47 on Tuesday to confirm all-star appellate lawyer Kyle Duncan to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Duncan is President Donald Trump’s 15th circuit court nominee to be confirmed since taking office. Dubbed by Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry as “the Neil Gorsuch of Louisiana,” Duncan is currently a lawyer in private practice. He has argued more than 30 cases in federal appellate courts, including two before the Supreme Court. Previously, Duncan served as Louisiana’s first solicitor general (or appellate chief), as general counsel of the Becket Fund (a nationally recognized public interest law firm), and as a law professor at the University of Mississippi Law School. After entering private practice, he continued to advance Louisiana’s interests by defending the state’s laws on marriage, abortion, and religious liberty. At Becket, Duncan served as the lead lawyer in Hobby Lobby’s challenge to the Obamacare contraceptive mandate. He supervised Becket’s representation of an Orthodox Jewish inmate against a prison that violated his rights and a mosque against a discriminatory land-use regulation under the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act. John Harris Commentary: The Waffle House Shootings Demonstrate There Are More Homicides in a Gun-Free Zone

by John Harris, executive director of the Tennessee Firearms Association   On Sunday April 23, 2018, a nude assassin walked into a gun free zone. This one happened to be a Waffle House. Waffle House reportedly has a corporate policy that guns are banned at its properties. Apparently, the nude, potentially mentally ill, either did not see or could not read the sign. He entered the property and now 4 people are dead, 2 more injured and one is acclaimed a hero because he made the life-choice to act rather than being yet another fatality statistic. The common characteristics are recurrent. An assassin. The assassin is frequently mentally ill and/or increasingly aligned with known terrorists organizations. A weapon of some sort (we have seen firearms, but also knives, crock pots, explosives, and motor vehicles). Finally, it’s a gun free zone. In Tennessee, there are some places that are gun free zones because of the legislature. We have had a Republican controlled legislature for 8 years and there should be fewer of these but that does not appear to be an established fact. In addition, this same Republican legislature has protected laws which allow property owners to declare their properties as…

Combat Veterans for Congress PAC Endorses Mark Green

On Tuesday the Combat Veterans for Congress PAC encorsed Iraq war veteran State Senator Mark Green (R-Clarksville) in the race for the 7th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN-07). Blackburn has no opposition for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), and is expected to face former Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, in the November general election. “Founded to elect more combat veterans to Congress, the PAC has endorsed over 100 combat veterans since its founding in 2009,” the Green campaign said in a statement, which continued: In announcing its endorsement, the PAC commented that Dr. Green “will bring to Congress his extensive experience in public policy skills, medical issues, and wisdom to better solve problems in government and represent the 7th Congressional District of Tennessee and the Republic.” A graduate of West Point, Green’s decorated military career began as an infantry officer. As an Army special operations flight surgeon assigned to the 160th Special Ops Aviation Regiment, he planned and flew on some of the War on Terror’s most covert operations. Green’s most memorable mission was the capture of Saddam Hussein. His military awards include the Bronze…

Commentary: Leading Conservative Organizations Unite Behind Jim Jordan For Speaker

Jim Jordan

by CHQ staff   The count of conservative organizations urging principled limited government constitutional conservative Representative Jim Jordan (OH-4) to run for Speaker of the House has now passed ten, with FedUp PAC, headed by CHQ Chairman Richard A. Viguerie, coming out in favor of Jordan to replace RINO Speaker Paul Ryan. Our friends at FreedomWorks posted a statement from president and CEO Adam Brandon saying: Jim Jordan is the only name that received unanimous consent from the FreedomWorks Activist Advisory Council. The level of grassroots energy surrounding a Jordan speakership campaign is something we haven’t seen in years. It indicates to us that selecting a truly conservative speaker would change the entire momentum of the 2018 midterm election cycle. Our activists believe this speakership campaign is the battle that will determine the future of the Republican Party. If Republicans in Congress really want to see the swamp drain, Rep. Jordan is the guy that’s going to work with President Trump to get it done. A House with Speaker Jordan at the gavel would actually pass laws, stand on principle, and cut spending. Speaker Jordan would make Congress work again. Mac Stoddard, FreedomWorks Digital Director says, “In less than 24 hours,…

Republican Wins Special Congressional Election in Arizona, Thwarting ‘Blue Wave’

Former State Senator Debbie Lesko (R-Phoenix) defeated Democrat Hiral Tipirneni by five points, 52 percent to 47 percent, in the special election in Arizona’s 8th Congressional District on Tuesday, thwarting the much hyped Democratic “Blue Wave.” While the results were closer than the 21 point victory President Trump secured in this suburban Phoenix Congressional District in November 2016, the loss took the air out of the balloon for many Democrats and many in the media, who have been predicting a “Blue Wave” in the November midterm elections. The vast majority of the votes in the race were cast during early voting. When those votes were counted one hour after the polls closed at 7 p.m. local time, Lesko had a 9,000 vote lead over Tipirneni, with only 19,000 votes left to count. That meant Tipirneni would have to win those votes by nearly a 3-to-1 margin to pull off the victory. In the end, those numbers simply did not materialize for Tipirneni, a former emergency room physician who now works as a cancer researcher. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Lesko had 52.6 percent of the vote to Tipirneni’s 47.4 percent. In terms of raw votes, Lesko had 91,390 votes…

State Senator Reginald Tate Commentary: Champions for Children

By State Senator Reginald Tate   Tennessee Education Commissioner Candice McQueen has accurately called “literacy attainment the equity issue of our time.” I agree. I will take it one step further: Education is the civil-rights issue of our generation. Education is also the key to Tennessee’s future. In Tennessee, public schools must ensure all students are well-prepared for college or the workforce. All students must be ready to participate as responsible and engaged citizens when they graduate. The greatest challenge we have is to make sure our students leave high school as creative and critical thinkers. That begins with the ability to read on grade level. It all begins and ends with reading. There is an undeniable connection between literacy skills and incarceration rates. Children who do not read on grade level are more likely to dropout, use drugs, or end up in prison. Research shows that reading abilities in third grade act as a tell-tale barometer for later school success. Reading to children every day is critical. The Department of Justice states, “The link between academic failure and delinquency, violence, and crime is welded to reading failure. Over 70% of inmates in America’s prisons cannot read above a fourth…

Kanye West’s Shoutout to Conservative Commentator Underscores Need for Civility, Respect

Vocal House Democrats & Certain Republicans Voted to Stop Sanctuary Cities in 2009, But Now They Are For Them

State Rep Charles Sargent

Some of the most vocal House Democrats and Republicans trying to kill this session’s anti-sanctuary city bill sponsored by State Rep. Jay Reedy (R-Erin) had, in 2009, voted “yes” to pass a bill that prohibited establishing sanctuary cities in Tennessee. The 2009 bill passed the House with a 80 yes votes. Among the most aggressive efforts to sideline Reedy’s bill this year that closes a loophole in the 2009 law, has come from State Rep. Charles Sargent (R-Franklin) who voted yes on the 2009 bill. Speaker Beth Harwell (R-Nashville) appointed Sargent to serve as chairman of the powerful House Finance Committee, a position he has held throughout Harwell’s tenure as Speaker. Even though Sargent added his name as a co-sponsor on Reedy’s bill, he used his position as chairman to try and kill Reedy’s bill in the House Finance Committee. Sargent voted yes on a motion to send the bill to a study by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR) which he then gaveled through on a voice vote despite loud and overwhelming opposition from the no votes. Sargent again voted against a motion to reconsider the bill which passed the committee followed by a majority vote to…

Retiring House Members Throw Curveball at Harwell’s Bid for Governor

In an unexpected turn during the House Finance Committee yesterday, two long-time supporters of Speaker Beth Harwell, voted against the anti-sanctuary city bill which 67 members of her Republican caucus is co-sponsoring. Finance Committee Chairman Rep. Charles Sargent (R-Franklin) and Rep. Steve McDaniel (R-Parkers Crossroads), both listed as co-sponsors of the bill, voted to effectively kill the bill by sending it to a summer study by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. Both Sargent and McDaniel are retiring from the Tennessee House of Representatives and are not on the ballot in 2018. The motion was made by Rep. Patsy Hazlewood (R-Signal Mountain), who does not support the measure. Harwell is listed as a co-sponsor of the bill. After being elected by the Republican caucus as Speaker, Harwell appointed Sargent to serve as chairman of the powerful House Finance Committee, a position he has held throughout Harwell’s tenure as Speaker. McDaniel has also held choice committee assignments under Harwell’s leadership and was the House member she appointed to lead the Ad Hoc Select Committee that put in motion the eventual ouster of former representative Jeremy Durham for alleged sexual conduct at the legislature. Radio Host Dave Ramsey and Churchill Mortgage Founder Mike Hardwick Endorse Carol Swain for Nashville Mayor

Conservative Republican Dr. Carol Swain picked up two more key endorsements Monday in her bid to become the Nashville’s next Mayor as financial expert, best-selling author, and nationally syndicated radio host Dave Ramsey, along with businessman and Churchill Mortgage founder and president Mike Hardwick, added their names to the growing list of area leaders backing the former Vanderbilt professor’s campaign. “Carol Swain is fabulously intelligent, articulate, and stands on principle. Her wisdom and values makes her the perfect answer to what Nashville needs right now in a Mayor,” Dave Ramsey said in a statement. Mike Hardwick added, “I give my strongest endorsement to Dr. Carol Swain’s mayoral bid. I have known Carol for over 15 years. She is a person of high integrity and courage. Carol is a visionary who will exercise good judgment as she works with others to keep Nashville strong and vibrant.” Swain’s campaign notes she has published a “Blueprint for Nashville” that lays out the policy agenda she will pursue during her term as Mayor. Amy Swearer Commentary: If Current Laws Had Been Followed, There Would Have Been No Waffle House Shooting

by Amy Swearer   On Monday afternoon, Tennessee law enforcement officers captured a 29-year-old Illinois man suspected of opening fire on diners at a Nashville Waffle House, despite the man having had his firearms seized on multiple occasions in the last two years. Four people died and several others were wounded by the attacker—who wore nothing but a green jacket—before a Waffle House employee heroically wrestled the firearm away and threw it over a counter. The attacker fled the scene naked and evaded police for over 24 hours before being apprehended. As often happens in the aftermath of highly publicized shooting incidents, blame has already been placed on the lack of “common-sense gun control.” But, once again, this blame is misplaced—had already-existing laws been properly followed and enforced, this individual would not have had access to a firearm. What We Know About the Shooter [ The liberal Left continue to push their radical agenda against American values. Sharp Partisan Divide over Arming Teachers to Provide Protection for Davidson County Schools

School safety - armed versus unarmed protection

In the wake of the terrible school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, many have suggested that allowing teachers who have been trained in the use of firearms, and who choose to be armed, be added as a level of protection at schools throughout the U.S. Some Tennessee schools have armed Student Resource Officers (SROs) but many others rely upon unarmed security officers or have no security on site at all. A recent Tennessee Star poll by Triton Research, which conducted an automated poll of 607 likely voters in Davidson County over a two day period April 12-13, 2018, asked respondents: Do you support or oppose allowing teachers who have a permit to carry a gun being allowed to have their gun with them at school if they wish, after they have had some additional training and certification? Davidson County self-identified “likely voters” opposed arming teachers by a 54.6% to 38.8% margin, with 6.6% undecided. However, there was a clear distinction between the views of Republican and Democrat voters on the issue. Republicans SUPPORTED allowing trained and certified teachers to be armed on school campuses by 74% to 19%. 7% were undecided. Democrats OPPOSED the idea…

Conservatives Want a House Speaker Who Will Deliver on Promised Reforms

by Rachel del Guidice   Conservative lawmakers say they want the next speaker of the House to be committed to issues Republicans ran on, and to making important procedural reforms. “More important than who the speaker is next year is what Republicans do this year,” Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told The Daily Signal. “And if we don’t get focused on and stay focused on what the American people elected us to do,” Jordan said, “then there’s not going to be a race for a Republican speaker. It will be a race for who is the minority leader. So that is what we have to be focused on.” Jordan and two other House conservatives spoke recently with The Daily Signal about what they want to see in House Speaker Paul Ryan’s successor. The lawmakers and two GOP aides emphasized following through on issues Republicans campaigned on in 2016 and earlier, including repealing Obamacare, fixing the immigration system and building a border wall, and reforming welfare programs. TFA Criticizes Briley for ‘Calling for Gun Control Rather Than Encouraging Citizens to Own and Learn How to Safely Use Firearms for Self-Defense’

The Tennessee Firearms Association (TFA) issued a stinging rebuke of Acting Mayor of Nashville David Briley’s call for more gun control on Monday. “In the early morning hours of Sunday, April 22, 2018, shots rang out as 4 innocent victims were murdered and others were injured. One man chose to confront the naked, apparently mentally unstable, killer and fortunately was successful in using only physical force to do so. Not a single victim, however, responded in self-defense or defense of others with their own handgun or other weapon” said John Harris, Executive Director of the TFA in a statement released by the group on Monday. “Tennessee Firearms Association has worked for more than two decades to improve the laws in Tennessee so that average citizens can chose whether to carry a firearm for self-defense and to eliminate or reduce the numbers of gun free zones in Tennessee. However, those efforts are frequently resisted by those in law enforcement and elected office,” continued Harris. “We saw evidence of that again on Sunday as within hours of the deaths, Nashville’s temporary mayor, David Briley, and its feckless congressman, Jim Cooper, seized opportunities to grab microphones as cameras were rolling to make the plea…

Democrats Clear Path For Pompeo’s Nomination as Secretary of State

Mike Pompeo

by Robert Donachie   Three Senate Democrats have announced their support for President Donald Trump’s pick to replace former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, making it almost a virtual guarantee the Senate will confirm the nomination of Mike Pompeo. “When I met with [CIA] Director Pompeo, we had a productive conversation about the complex security challenges we face, including the dangerous threat posed by North Korea’s nuclear missile program. I strongly believe that a successful, peaceful outcome will require a comprehensive strategy and a full team on the field, including an effective State Department, to leverage all available tools,” Democratic Sen. SOURCES: Most Of What EPA’s Leaker Told Dems About Scott Pruitt Is ‘False’

EPA Chief Scott Priutt

by Michael Bastasch   A former Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official likely behind negative media stories about Administrator Scott Pruitt doesn’t have all his facts straight, according sources familiar with EPA’s inner-workings. Former Trump campaign official Kevin Chmielewski, who’s also former EPA deputy chief of staff operations, gave congressional Democrats a list of accusations against Pruitt, detailing the administrator’s alleged “wasteful spending” and “disregard for ethical and legal requirements.” Chmielewski is the likely source for media reports surrounding Pruitt’s spending habits and alleged ethical lapses. Chmielewski was removed from his position at EPA for challenging Pruitt, but that hasn’t been confirmed, reports said. But many of Chmielewski’s claims have been called into question by two sources familiar with Pruitt’s security detail. One source told The Daily Caller News Foundation of Chmielewski’s that “more than 60 percent is false, the other 40 percent is information he distorted.” In one instance Chmielewski alleged “a $30,000 contract with private Italian security personnel entered into by Mr. [Pasquele] Nino Perrotta,” ahead of Pruitt’s attendance of a G7 summit in Italy. However, two sources familiar with Pruitt’s security said that never happened, adding Perrotta, the special agent in charge of Pruitt’s security detail, would have had no authority…

Author of The Book ‘Gosnell’ Pens New Play ‘$18 Billion Prize’ Exposing the Climate Change Fraud

by CHQ Staff   Regular CHQ readers will recognize the name Phelim McAleer from the Gosnell book and movie about now-imprisoned abortionist and murderer Dr. Kermit Gosnell or the Ferguson Play. Mr. McAleer tells stories that the establishment and the mainstream media want to ignore, so we thought we’d tell CHQ readers about his latest play and how you can help get it on the stage. McAleer’s new play exposes how environmentalists carried out the world’s biggest fraud, how the media and Hollywood helped promote the fraud, and how they almost got away with it. The play, The $18-Billion Prize, will open at the Phoenix Theater in San Francisco on May 19th and run until June 3rd. McAleer co-wrote the play with Jonathan Leaf and it tells the story of a lawsuit, led by New York lawyer Steven Donziger, against the Chevron oil company. The lawsuit alleged Chevron destroyed the rainforest in Ecuador and poisoned the natives. It was successful, and an Ecuadorian court awarded the plaintiffs a staggering $18 billion. Yes, BILLION. This was the biggest ever award in a civil court, but it was ALSO the biggest fraud in history. Haven’t heard about it? Funny, but not surprising, says McAleer,…

EXCLUSIVE: In Private, Trump Aide George Papadopoulos Denies Collusion

Robert Mueller, George Papadopoulous, Donald Trump

by Chuck Ross   More than six months have passed since George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and began cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. In that span, speculation has swirled about whether the President Donald Trump’s former campaign adviser holds the keys to collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government. Democrats, including California Rep. Adam Schiff, routinely cite Papadopoulos as a possible Trump campaign conduit to Russia, and his Oct. 5 guilty plea and subsequent cooperation with Mueller has fueled speculation that he has provided damaging information about the Trump campaign’s activities. Papadopoulos, an energy consultant who lives in Chicago, has not spoken publicly about the case against him. But two sources familiar with his thinking say that he has privately denied that he was involved in any collusion scheme. Sources say he has also downplayed the significance of conversations that he had in London with two separate diplomats in which Hillary Clinton’s emails were allegedly discussed. Those alleged discussions about emails would later prompt the FBI to open a counterintelligence intelligence investigation into the Trump team. As part of his plea deal with Mueller, Papadopoulos acknowledged Joseph Mifsud, a professor and former Maltese diplomat, told…

Lynn Ahrens, the Artist Behind Schoolhouse Rock’s ‘The Preamble’

Thanks to the wildly popular Schoolhouse Rock! cartoon series, if you were a child of the 1970s or 1980s, chances are you hum a certain song whenever anyone mentions The Preamble. In fact, you’re probably humming it right now. In three minutes, the folksy tune with the catchy chorus provides viewers a foundational understanding of the what the U.S. Constitution – and especially The Preamble – are, exactly and why they’re important. Schoolhouse Rock! was the brainchild of David McCall, of the advertising agency McCaffrey & McCall. The idea came to him as he watched his young son struggle to learn his multiplication tables, but could rattle off all the lyrics of the latest Rolling Stones hit without a second thought. McCall realized he if he could place good educational material inside of catchy music with kid-friendly animations,  he would be able to help children just like his son.  In true free market fashion, he pitched his idea to ABC television – his biggest client at the time. The network behemoth bought the idea, and the 3min shorts were headed for air a few months later. The first-ever installment of Schoolhouse Rock – “Three is the Magic Number” – was broadcast January 3, 1973. The…

Delta Air Lines Customer Fined $500 By Customs For Apple She Received On The Plane

by Nick Givas   A Delta Air Lines customer was hit with a $500 fine from customs, for saving an apple she’d received on her flight from Paris back to the United States. Crystal Tadlock from Arvada, Colo., said a flight attendant gave her the apple in a plastic bag. She wasn’t hungry, but decided to save it in her bag for later, Fox31 Denver reported. When she went through customs her bag was searched and the apple was discovered. Taldock explained the situation and asked if she could eat it or throw it out, but she was told “no.” Customs then handed her a $500 fine for possessing the apple. “He had asked me if my trip to France was expensive and I said, ‘Yeah.’ I didn’t really get why he was asking that question, and then he said, ‘It’s about to get a lot more expensive after I charge you $500,’” Tadlock told Fox31. Part of the blame should fall on Delta for not reminding passengers they couldn’t take fruit off the plane, she said. She thinks it’s ridiculous that she was ticketed when the apple was clearly from Delta Air Lines. “It’s really unfortunate someone has to go through that…

Nashville Mayoral Candidate Carol Swain Raises $20,000 in One Day with Rick Santorum and Pete Hegseth Events

Carol Swain with Pete Hegseth and Rick Santorum

NASHVILLE, Tennessee–About two hundred supporters of Nashville mayoral candidate Carol Swain donated more than $20,000 to her campaign on Monday at events with former Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) and Fox & Friends Weekend co-host Pete Hegseth held at the Ray Stevens CabaRay Showroom, the new entertainment venue owned by and featuring Music City legend Ray Stevens. Monday’s haul increased the amount Swain’s campaign has raised in just three weeks to more than $60,000, further solidifying her position as the only serious challenger to Acting Mayor David Briley in the May 24 special mayoral election for Nashville/Davidson County. Both Santorum and Hegseth spoke at a 4 p.m. fundraising event at the CabaRay, but due to scheduling reasons, Santorum was unable to attend the 6 p.m. fundraising event, also held at the CabaRay. At the later event, Hegseth explained to the audience why he had flown down to Nashville from New York City and planned on making his own contribution to Swain’s campaign for Mayor of Nashville. “You just meet certain people you resonate with,” Hegseth said of Swain, who has appeared as a guest on Fox & Friends Weekend several times. “They are a truth teller amidst a sea of the wrong…

Tennessee Star Poll Shows Partisan Divide Among Davidson County Voters Regarding Bredesen-Blackburn Senate Race

Marsha Blackburn, Phil Bredesen

It is not surprising that former Democrat Governor and Nashville Mayor Phil Bredesen has a significant lead over Republican Congresswoman Marsha Blackburn among likely voters in heavily Democrat-leaning Davidson County. What is a bit concerning for Republican supporters of Blackburn in the level of support that Bredesen receives from Davidson County voters who identify themselves as Republicans. The polling data is from a recent Tennessee Star poll conducted by Triton Research, which conducted an automated poll of 607 likely voters over a two day period April 12-13, 2018. One of the questions in the poll dealt with the upcoming U.S. Senate race in November, 2018 with Bredesen and Blackburn competing as their party nominees. Respondents were asked: “If the election was held today, who would be your choice for U.S. Senate, Marsha Blackburn or Phil Bredesen?” Overall, Bredesen outpolled Blackburn among Davidson County self-identified likely voters by a margin of 58.8% to 36.2% with 5.1% undecided. Among self-identified Democrat voters Bredesen had an advantage of 86-10 over Blackburn; with Blackburn leading among Republican voters by a 73-21 gap. Independent voters split 63.5 to 31 in favor of Bredesen. In the poll, 46% of respondents identified themselves as Democrats while 35%…

Nashville Mayoral Candidate Carol Swain: Waffle House Shooting ‘Another Example of the Rise in Violent Crime Plaguing Our Fair City’

Former Vanderbilt professor Carol Swain, a candidate for Mayor of Nashville in the May 24 special election, issued a statement late Sunday condemning the shootings at an Antioch, Tennessee Waffle House earlier in the day. “What happened today in Antioch is a terrible tragedy. It is another example of the rise in violent crime that is plaguing our fair city,” Swain said in the statement. “We must pray for the families involved, but we must also take action, she noted, adding: As Mayor, I will work with City Council and mental health agencies to address the troubling mental health issues that are plaguing some of our citizens. Additionally, I will work with the metropolitan police and community leaders to create cultural change in our city. I call on all Nashvillians to be the change they want to see in their communities. Swain also offered a stark contrast to her rival in the May 24 special election, Acting Mayor David Briley, who responded to the shootings by calling for more gun control. “I am also a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment,” Swaid added. “Today’s shooting shows how important it is to have well trained and armed citizens in the community.…

Raul Lopez Commentary: We Are a Nation of Immigrants, But We Are a Nation of Laws First

Recently, immigration enforcement in East Tennessee generated headlines. The scenes were tragic and heart-wrenching as families were being torn apart. Unfortunately, instead of encouraging legal immigration to this country to prevent these scenes from playing out again in the future, progressive special interest groups used the immigration raids as an opportunity to defend and justify illegal immigration. This is incredibly sad and speaks volumes about just how far we have gotten from the time when virtually everyone agreed that those seeking to come to this country should come to this country the right way. After all, we are a nation of immigrants, but also a nation of laws. Of course, we can certainly change our immigration laws to make them even more generous, but it must be done through the legislative bodies to ensure that the American people have had a chance to weigh in on the process. The current immigration system has certainly changed since my family moved to this country from Cuba seeking political asylum in the 1960’s. I’m grateful that my parents made that difficult choice to come to this country. I can only imagine how agonizing the decision-making process was for them, as they weighed the…

Second District Congressional Republican Primary Fundraising Details Show a Race That is Heating Up

The Republican primary to fill the 2nd Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Jimmy Duncan (R-TN-02) is heating up as Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, businessman Jason Emert and State Rep. Jimmy Matlock (R-Lenoir City) vie for the job. First quarter 2018 fundraising reports reveal that all three will have significant resources in the race. Local political observers have said that Burchett has the advantage due to his strong support and high name recognition in Knox County, which is the largest population center in the Second District. However, there are no current public polls that have been released that might give a snapshot regarding the status of the race. The most recent Federal Election Commission fundraising reports filed by the candidates provide lots of information. The primary election date is August 2, 2018. Tim Burchett (pictured, left) Burchett reported raising $84,170.57 in total donations in the first quarter of 2018 (January-March) with $234,821.10 cash on hand. Burchett has raised a total of $377,342.18 in the race so far, with no personal loans from Burchett to his campaign. Among the major notable donors to the Burchett campaign in the first quarter are Joan and Victor Ashe (former Knoxville Mayor and…

‘Hacked’ DNC Servers Under Scrutiny As Possible Data Manipulation and Loss Point to Purposeful Destruction

Hillary Clinton

By Robert Romano   On Twitter on April 20, President Donald Trump has said if there’s an upside to the DNC lawsuit against the Trump campaign, Wikileaks and Russia, he said “we will now counter for the DNC Server that they refused to give to the FBI…” But according to the DNC’s filing, the committee may have destroyed all the evidence of the alleged hack by Russia of the DNC emails: “As a result of the persistence of the Russian state-sponsored infiltration, in order to remove the unauthorized users from its network, the DNC was required to decommission more than 140 servers, remove and reinstall all software, including the operating systems, for more than 180 computers, and rebuild at least 11 servers.” Which sounds familiar. ‘Sleepy Eyes’ Chuck Todd the Target of President Trump’s Ire For Downplaying US Negotiations With North Korea

by Chris White   President Donald Trump clobbered NBC host Chuck Todd Sunday morning for supposedly suggesting the U.S. gave up too much in its negotiations with North Korea. “Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd of Fake News NBC just stated that we have given up so much in our negotiations with North Korea, and they have given up nothing,” Trump wrote in a tweet Sunday. He was likely referring to comments Todd made on Sunday’s “Today Show,” which airs before “Meet The Press.” “Wow, we haven’t given up anything & they have agreed to denuclearization (so great for World), site closure, & no more testing!” Trump added in an early Sunday morning tweet, which came less than a week after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed to the “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula without preconditions. Romney Faces Tough Path To Replace Retiring Utah Senator Orrin Hatch

Mitt Romney & Orrin Hatch

by Thomas Phippen   Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney failed to win the Utah Republican nomination for the open U.S. Senate seat Saturday and will now compete in the June primary. Romney also failed to win a majority at the Utah GOP convention, coming in with 49 percent of delegates’ support to Rep. Mike Kennedy’s 51 percent for the nomination to fill retiring Sen. Orrin Hatch’s seat. A candidate needs 60 percent of the delegate vote to win the Utah Republican party’s nomination outright. After two rounds of voting, no candidate reached that threshold, forcing a wider primary election. If the defeat was a cause for concern to the former Republican presidential nominee, he didn’t show it. “Frankly, given the fact that I collected signatures and the delegates don’t like people who collect signatures, I’m delighted with the outcome,” Romney said, according to the Desert News. “Thank you to all the delegates who hung in there with us all day at the Convention,” Romney tweeted later Saturday. “I appreciate the support I received and look forward to the primary election.” Romney launched his signature-gathering campaign in February after months of speculation about whether he would enter the race at all. As of the end…

Nunes: ‘Major Irregularities’ In State Department’s Handling Of Trump-Russia Info

by Chuck Ross   The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence chairman provided an update on Sunday of the panel’s investigation into what he says are “major irregularities” at the State Department regarding its handling of information about President Donald Trump’s campaign. California Rep. and Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes’s investigators are looking into the State Department’s handling of information about George Papadopoulos, the Trump campaign adviser whose discussions about Hillary Clinton emails are what led the FBI to open its counterintelligence investigation in July 2016, the chairman suggested when he appeared on Fox News. “We are investigating the State Department. We think there are some major irregularities at the State Department, and we’re trying to figure out how it is that this information about Mr. Papadopoulos of all people, who was supposedly meeting with some folks in London, how that made it over across into the FBI’s hands,” Nunes told Maria Bartiromo, the host of “Sunday Morning Futures.” ,@DevinNunes: “We do know that longtime associates of @HillaryClinton, including Sidney Blumenthal and another person named, I think, Cody Shearer, were actively giving information to the @StateDept that was somehow making its way to the @FBI.” #[email protected]/nUw5gIHCB7 — Fox News (@FoxNews) April…

The Connection Between Russia and Two Green Groups Fighting Fracking in US

Natural gas development of the celebrated Marcellus Shale deposits has spurred jobs and other economic growth in neighboring Pennsylvania. But not in New York, which nearly 10 years ago banned the process of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, to produce natural gas. Two environmental advocacy groups that successfully lobbied against fracking in New York each received more than $10 million in grants from a foundation in California that got financial support from a Bermuda company congressional investigators linked to the Russians, public documents show. Acting Mayor of Nashville David Briley Calls for Gun Control After Waffle House Shootings, Carol Swain Criticizes His ‘Pandering’ for Votes

David Briley Waffle House Tragedy

Acting Mayor of Nashville David Briley called for more gun control measures on Sunday, hours after 29-year-old Travis Reinking of Morton, Illinois allegedly shot and killed four people at a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee in the early hours of Sunday morning. More casualties were avoided when 29-year-old David Shaw, Jr., a customer inside the Waffle House, confronted the alleged attacker, wrestling his gun away from him. Reinking, who was clad only in a jacket at the time, removed the jacket and ran naked away from the scene of the crime. He remains at large. Briley’s first response came in this statement released by his office: “It’s a tragic day for our city anytime people lose their lives at the hands of a gunman. My heart goes out to the families and friends of every person who was killed or wounded in this morning’s shooting. I know all of their lives will be forever changed by this devastating crime.” “There’s clearly more to be said about these circumstances, but for now I ask Nashville to pray for and rally around these victims and join me in thanking the Metro Nashville Police Department as it works to find and apprehend the…

Nashville-Based Author Brad Thor Says He Will Challenge President Trump in 2020 GOP Primary

Best-selling author Brad Thor, a resident of Nashville, says he “will challenge President Donald Trump in the 2020 Republican primary,” according to the Daily Caller News Foundation, which reported Thor confirmed his challenge on Saturday: The conservative author’s biggest problem with the Trump presidency is the man himself. “He’s mentally unfit,” Thor told TheDCNF. Thor teased out his announcement on Twitter Saturday evening, pledging to run if no other conservative will challenge Trump. “America deserves better leadership,” Thor said. He added a few minutes later: “In fact, let’s make it official. I’m in.” “The pages of history do not care if you were a farmer, a soldier, a doctor, or a butcher,” Thor told TheDCNF. “They care whether or not, when called, if you rose up to serve. Our Republic cries out for leadership, someone who will respect our Constitutional norms and represent the world’s greatest minority – the individual. That is who I am running for.” The White House did not immediately return a request for comment. In May 2016, Thor became entangled in a controversy for comments he made about then-candidate Trump in an interview with radio host Glenn Beck, as Breitbart News reported at the time: Fiction…

Add These Voter Fraud Cases to the Growing List

by Jason Snead   Despite the lack of media coverage, evidence of election fraud continues to mount. This week, The Heritage Foundation added 26 new entries to its election fraud database, bringing the searchable ledger to a total of 1,132 proven instances of election fraud. That includes 983 cases that ended in a criminal conviction, 48 that led to civil penalties, 79 where defendants were enrolled in a diversion program, and 22 cases of official or judicial findings of fraud. Americans should be alarmed. These entries represent irrefutable evidence that fraud has impacted elections in 47 states, and across all levels of government. Worse still, they are probably just the tip of America’s election fraud iceberg. The Heritage database is not comprehensive, so the actual volume of vote fraud is likely far higher. Exactly how much higher is anybody’s guess. The liberal Left continue to push their radical agenda against American values. The Kevin Williamson Saga Reveals The True Colors Of Journalists

by Joe Simonson   Kevin D. Williamson, the former National Review writer and editor who was recently fired from a new position at The Atlantic for controversial comments he made about abortion, wrote an op-ed Friday in The Wall Street Journal giving his perspective on the incident for the first time. In his column, readers discover a variety of insights into the state of contemporary journalism, ranging from Atlantic editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg’s admission that previous writers like Christopher Hitchens could get away from writing his unorthodox opinions because he was “in the family,” while Williamson is a foreigner to the liberal intelligentsia. We also come to learn just how out-of-touch Goldberg appears to be from the state of the left. Soon after his hiring, Williamson warned his new boss that “the campaign to have me fired will begin 11 seconds after you announce that you’ve hired me.” “It won’t be that bad,” Williams recounts Goldberg responding. “The Atlantic isn’t the New York Times. It isn’t high church for liberals.” Perhaps The Atlantic isn’t, but as much as conservatives can make jokes about the direction of liberalism with the recent Starbucks controversy, it has become abundantly clear that nothing appears off limits to American’s current…

Enthusiastic Crowd at Grand Opening of Carol Swain for Mayor Headquarters in Nashville

Carol Swain HQ Opening

NASHVILLE, Tennessee–An enthusiastic crowd of more than 100 supporters joined Nashville mayoral candidate Carol Swain at the grand opening of her campaign headquarters on White Bridge Road Saturday afternoon. The former Vanderbilt professor spoke at the event, highlighting the major themes of her campaign for mayor: opposition to the $9 billion transit plan on the May 1 ballot in Nashville Davidson County, support for improving the infrastructure by repairing potholes, roads and bridges, and support for ending cronyism and the accompanying unfair distribution of neighborhood resources Though the grand opening celebration celebration was not a fundraising event, dozens of those in attendance chose to make a financial contribution to the campaign. Sources tell The Tennessee Star about $2,000 was contributed to the campaign by those who attended, more evidence that Swain is the only candidate capable of raising the necessary financial resources to seriously compete with Acting Mayor David Briley, the front runner in the May 24 special mayoral election in Nashville/Davidson County. As The Star reported previously, the Swain campaign raised more than $40,000 in its first two weeks of operations. Swain has generated endorsements and financial support from around the country, in addition to the support she…

Elected Officials and Law Enforcement Ignore Existing Laws Prohibiting Political Activities and the School Walkouts They Organize

By Robert Romano   Indivisible.org is at it again, openly organizing more than 2,300 school walkouts on April 19 and April 20 to call for a “nationwide protest of our leaders’ failure to pass laws that protect us from gun violence,” urging more nationwide gun control laws in the wake of the Parkland, Fla. massacre in February. The purpose of the protest is purely about electoral politics, with the organizers saying, “if cowardly politicians fail to act, young people will show them the consequences of letting so many Americans die by voting them out in November.” Republicans have majorities in both the House and Senate, and “vote them out” appears to be specifically directed at them. But even if you wanted to say it wasn’t purely partisan, it is still is certainly about organizing voters towards a political objective. The real question is why are these political protests occurring during school hours? Why can’t they happen after school or over the weekends when they won’t be so disruptive? How many walkouts are they planning this year? Isn’t this disrupting academic studies? And why are State Attorneys General putting up with it? For example, in South Carolina, more than a dozen such school walkouts…
