Memphis, Knoxville Among Worst Cities, USA TODAY Says of Towns It Calls Home

Memphis

Media giant Gannett has compiled a list of what it says are the 50 worst cities to live in, and some of the top locations are towns where it operates newspapers, including two in Tennessee. USA TODAY compiled the list using data from 24/7 Wall Street, a website that publishes financial news and opinion. 24/7 Wall Street created an index of eight categories: crime, economy, education, environment, health, housing, infrastructure and leisure, to identify the 50 cities. Memphis comes in as the 4th worst city in which to live, just ahead of Cleveland, Ohio, at 5th worst. The 36th worst is Knoxville. Gannett owns The Knoxville News-Sentinel and The Commercial Appeal in Memphis. Nashville, home of The Tennessean, did not make the list. USA TODAY admits that quality of life is a subjective measure. “Quality of life is subjective, and difficult to measure,” Gannett’s story says. “Still, there is a wide range of quantifiable factors that can impact quality of life in a given area. Affordability, safety, job market strength, quality of education, infrastructure, average commute times, air quality, and the presence of cultural attractions are just a few examples of factors that can influence overall quality of life. “Cities…

Jordan Peterson Came to Nashville and Packed the House on His ’12 Rules for Living’ Tour

Jordan Peterson

As a part of a book tour to promote his best-selling 12 Rules for Living, straight-talking clinical psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson appeared at the Ryman to a packed house on Monday night. Dr. Jordan Peterson gained national attention in Canada after openly and vehemently opposing a speech code laws that would criminalize using the wrong pronoun for a (transgender) person. His fame grew exponentially after a half-hour slug-fest of an interview with British reporter Cathy Newman went viral. Here in Tennessee, people came from miles around to hear the influential psychologist and professor speak about the essential skills and habits adults need to lead happy and fulfilling lives. But rather than review the details of his book, Peterson spent his time in Nashville discussing an array of topics, including his ‘Sleeping Beauty Philosophy’ (here’s a three minute summary by Peterson – note: some adult language). We’ve got lobsters! The crowd went wild when Peterson took the stage. Insane crowd tonight. Get it, @jordanbpeterson! pic.twitter.com/UIyMYiHnQS — Dave Rubin (@RubinReport) June 12, 2018 And then, the audience serenaded him with “Happy Birthday” (Peterson’s birthday is June 12). When the crowd settled down, Peterson began his talk in earnest. You could hear a pin drop. (Yes; even the texting guy —…

Women and Girls in Eight Battleground States at Increased Risk For Female Genital Mutilation

Tennessee Star

The 2013 Population Reference Bureau (PRB) estimate that over 500,000 women and girls in the U.S. are at risk for female genital mutilation (FGM) has been confirmed by an updated analysis issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Eight “battleground states” where voters will determine control of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives in November, are ranked by the PRB within the top 20 states where women and girls face the highest risk of   FGM – Minnesota (3rd), Ohio (9th), Pennsylvania (11th), Michigan (15th), N.Carolina (16th), Colorado (17th), Arizona (19th), Nevada (20th). Three cities within the battleground states are ranked in the top 10 Metropolitan areas where women and girls face the greatest risk of FGM. Minneapolis, Minnesota is the metropolitan area with the largest Somali community in the country. Columbus, Ohio, the metropolitan area with the second largest Somali community in the country ranks number 7, followed by Philadelphia, Pennsylvania which is ranked 8th and where an estimated 16,000 women and girls are at risk for FGM. Updating its U.S. FGM risk estimate from 1990 to 2012, the Center for Disease Control 2016 Public Health Report showed that “the total number of women and girls in the United States at…

Former Governor Sundquist Hosting Fundraiser for Jimmy Matlock Congressional Campaign

Matlock and Sundquist

Former Tennessee Governor Don Sundquist, who became a political “untouchable” for nearly two decades after unsuccessfully attempting to force a state income tax down the throats of Tennessee taxpayers, is increasingly moving back into the political arena. First, he endorsed Randy Boyd for Governor, though Sundquist has been a visible component of the Boyd campaign since his endorsement. Then, in April, after Marsha Blackburn had cleared the field in her bid to succeed Senator Bob Corker, Sundquist urged Republicans to get behind her to defeat Democrat Phil Bredesen. Now, State Representative Jimmy Matlock, who is locked in a tough fight with Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett to replace 2d District Congressman Jimmy Duncan, is trotting Sundquist out for a fundraiser next Monday. The event, also hosted by Congressman Jimmy Duncan and his wife Lynn, is being held at the home of Ted and Drama Russell in Knoxville. The income tax is not the only political baggage that Don Sundquist drags along with him when he endorses a candidate. Illegal immigration is a top concern among Republican primary voters in Tennessee and nationally, and Diane Black is under fire for her vote to give driver’s licenses to illegals in 2001.  Meanwhile,…

Entire TN GOP House Delegation Supports Spending Cuts in $15 Billion Rescission Bill, While Dems Vote No

Tennessee Republician House Delegation

The final vote on the “Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act,”  a $15 billion rescission bill, that passed the U.S House of Representatives on June 7 – and which the White House supported – is unsurprising. The two Tennessee Democrats in the House voted to continue spending your tax dollars on “expired and unnecessary programs,” while the seven Tennessee Republicans in the House voted to stop the waste. Tennessee Republicans who voted yes to cut spending: Rep. Phil Roe (R-TN-01) Rep. Jimmy Duncan (R-TN-02) Rep. Chuck Fleischman (R-TN-03) Rep Scott DesJarlais (R-TN-04) Rep. Diane Black (R-TN-06) Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN-07) Rep. David Kustoff (R-TN-08) Tennessee Democrats who voted no and opposed cuts in spending: Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN-05) Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) The White House released a statement at the time of the vote. For those keeping score at home, this is just one more bit of proof that the party of Phil Bredesen has absolutely no intention of reining in spending in Washington. The Administration applauds today’s passage of H.R. 3, the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act, in the U.S. House of Representatives and urges the Senate to quickly act on the legislation. In keeping…

Corker Tries to Undermine Trump Again, Says President is Damaging Relationships With Friends

Bob Corker

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) is criticizing President Donald Trump once again, media outlets report. Fox News’ Congressionis al reporter Chad Pergram tweeted Tuesday, “Senate Foreign Relations Cmte chair Corker on Trump: I think there is no questions that we are damaging relationships with very close friends..it’s unnecessary..I don’t understand why we would go out an purposefully create negative discourse when it’s not necessary.” Senate Foreign Relations Cmte chair Corker on Trump: I think there is no questions that we are damaging relationships with very close friends..it’s unnecessary..I don’t understand why we would go out an purposefully create negative discourse when it’s not necessary. — Chad Pergram (@ChadPergram) June 12, 2018 Corker also unloaded on his fellow Republicans for supposedly cowering from Trump, Roll Call reported. The retiring Tennessee senator was angered that his amendment to the defense authorization measure that would reclaim congressional prerogatives on trade and tariffs would not be up for a vote, Roll Call said. He mocked senators for not standing up to Trump, including the No. 2 Republican, Majority Whip John Cornyn. “Gosh, almighty, I heard the senator from Texas, the senior senator from Texas saying the other day, well, gosh, we might upset the…

Flinn Launches New TV Ad Focused on Kustoff Voting with Nancy Pelosi 227 Times

George Flinn commercial

Dr. George Flinn has begun airing a new campaign commercial accusing Congressman David Kustoff of betraying the people of West Tennessee by accepting money from law firms that represent terrorists, by voting with Nancy Pelosi hundreds of times and accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars from special interest lobbying groups in his first term. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ivh0cZlejIU Despite Congressman Kustoff’s promise to destroy radical islamic terrorism, Flinn notes that he accepted campaign donations from two law firms that are best known for representing terrorists in court. Those law firms, Covington & Burling LLP and King & Spalding LLP donated to Kustoff’s reelection campaign on June 26, 2017 and March 30, 2018, respectively. Covington & Burling boasts on their website that they currently represent 15 detainees in Guantanamo Bay at no charge. “These two law firms could not be further removed from our West Tennessee values,” Flinn said. “Covington & Burling and King & Spalding are left-leaning, social justice warrior law firms that want a direct line to a fellow trial lawyer in Congress,” he added. Flinn’s new television ad also points out that Kustoff also has voted with Nancy Pelosi 227 times in his first term (as of June 6, 2018) as…

Bob Corlew Commentary: Democrats Will Stop at Nothing to Impeach President Trump

Bob Corlew

by Judge Bob Corlew, Candidate for Tennessee’s 6th Congressional District   Political prognosticators have predicted there might be a blue wave coming in November. They believe the House will flip to Democrat control and the U.S. Senate race in Tennessee could decide who controls the U.S. Senate. It is important to keep in mind these same prognosticators also discounted then-candidate Donald J. Trump, and all but anointed Hillary Clinton as the 45th President of the United States. Although I believe the Republicans will stay in control in Washington, Democrats in the House of Representatives have become more vocal on impeaching our president if they do take control as the prognosticators predict. Impeaching President Trump is becoming a campaign promise from Democratic candidates in races across the country and a litmus test for their far-left liberal donors and activists. Democratic Congressman Al Green of Texas stated that President Trump is “the quintessential person that impeachment was designed for” and Democratic Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California said “to get ready for impeachment.” Tom Steyer, a billionaire liberal from California, is running over $20 million worth of television ads imploring Congress to impeach President Trump. Because impeachment is becoming a normal talking point…

Commentary: Does Robbing Children of Work Deny Them a Sense of Fulfillment?

Kid mows the lawn

by Annie Holmquist   Headlines in 2018 seem to tell a recurring story: Unemployment rates are lower than ever. Numbers which registered in double digits only a few years ago are now strikingly low and telling a tale of booming prosperity. All that is well and good, particularly for those in the Trump Administration. But many of us have overlooked another set of unemployment numbers – numbers which are soaring and signaling a tale of doom for those caught up in the vicious cycle. Who are these unknown unemployed? Quite simply, they are our children. Columnist and author Katherine Reynolds Lewis makes this case in a recent interview with NPR. According to Lewis, the focus on helping children succeed in all kinds of extracurricular activities has prevented parents from involving their children in chores and other household responsibilities. As a result, these children are excluded from the valuable lessons and sense of community, value, and belonging that these chores bring. “They’re not asked to do anything to contribute to a neighborhood or family or community,” Lewis told NPR. “And that really erodes their sense of self-worth — just as it would with an adult being unemployed.” She continued: “To be straight-A students and athletic…

Scientists Have Created a ‘Flux Capacitor’ That Could Unlock New Dimensions to Communications, Quantum Computing

Flux Capacitor

by Thomas Stace   The technology that allowed Marty McFly to travel back in time in the 1985 movie Back to the Future was the mythical flux capacitor, designed by inventor Doc Brown. We’ve now developed our own kind of flux capacitor, as detailed recently in Physical Review Letters. While we can’t send a DeLorean car back in time, we hope it will have important applications in communication technology and quantum computing. How did we do it? Well it’s all to do with symmetry. There are many kinds of symmetry in science, including one that deals with time reversal. Time Reversal Time reversal symmetry is a complex sort of symmetry that physicists like to think about, and relies on the imaginary as much as the real. Suppose you make a movie of an event occurring. You could then ask: “If I edited the movie to run backwards, and showed it to my friends, could they tell?” This might seem obvious: people don’t usually walk or talk backwards; spilt milk doesn’t spontaneously jump back into its carton; a golf ball doesn’t miraculously launch backwards from the fairway, landing perfectly balanced on the tee at the same moment as the club catches it. Golf doesn’t…

Rep. Steve Cohen Unhinged Over Trump North Korea Summit Public Largely Supports

Steve Cohen

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) has come unhinged on Twitter over President Trump’s historic summit with Kim Jong Un in Singapore earlier this week. While there is certainly room for skepticism as to how much trust to place in North Korea’s leaders on the heels of their meeting with President Donald Trump, a new PEW research poll shows overwhelming support for the talks among the public as a whole. Americans overwhelmingly support direct talks between the United States and North Korea over its nuclear program. About seven-in-ten (71%) approve of these talks, while just 21% disapprove. However, the public is skeptical about whether North Korea’s leaders are serious about addressing concerns over its nuclear program. Changing views on whether U.S. does too much – or too little – globally. Americans are now evenly split over whether the U.S. does too little (33%), too much (30%) or the right amount (29%) to solve world problems; that is a change from two years ago, when the plurality view (41%) was that the U.S. did too much globally. The shift has been driven by changes among partisans: Republicans and Republican-leaning independents increasingly say the U.S. is doing the right amount globally, while Democrats and…

The Tennessee Star is increasing its coverage of Battleground States as the nation moves towards the 2018 Mid-term elections. A new link on the website is devoted to stories and reports from states where voters will determine control of the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives in November. “The intense battle between Republican Marsha Blackburn and Democrat Phil Bredesen may have an impact on the control of the Senate, although Blackburn remains the favorite,” Tennessee Star Editor-in-chief Michael Patrick Leahy pointed out. “But Tennesseans are also interested in what is happening in House and Senate races in states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Missouri, Florida, and Michigan to name a few. Our new section devoted to Battleground States coverage will not only keep Tennessee voters informed about the political campaigns in those states but also remind them of the importance of the Tennessee Senate race in the national balance of power.” The link for Battleground States appears in the top line section of The Tennessee Star. Political Editor Steve Gill noted that there are about a dozen House races in Ohio and Pennsylvania that can either preserve the Republican Majority in the House or swing control to Nancy Pelosi and the…

Twitter CEO Caves To Liberal Backlash, Says He Was Wrong To Eat Chick-Fil-A

Jack Dorsey

by Peter Hasson   Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey on Sunday expressed regret over eating at Chick-fil-A, because of the chicken company’s CEO’s personal views on gay marriage. Dorsey tweeted a screenshot from his phone that showed a purchase he had made at Chick-fil-A using a mobile application. After a liberal backlash, however, Dorsey apologized for eating at the popular fast food restaurant.   At issue was Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy’s 2012 support for defining marriage as between a man and a woman, which he described as “the biblical definition of a family.” “Please delete this or follow up with how much free advertising you’re going to give GLAAD” Former CNN anchor Soledad O’Brien was among those to call out Dorsey for eating at the self-described home of the original chicken sandwich. President Donald Trump Meets Kim Jong Un in Singapore for Historic Summit

Trump and Kim at Summit

by Steve Herman   President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have moved on to a working lunch of beef short ribs, sweet and sour crispy pork, and braised codfish. Among those joining the leaders on the U.S. side were Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, White House chief of staff John Kelly and national security adviser John Bolton. The North Korean delegation included Kim Yong Chol, a top aide to Kim Jong Un who recently met Trump at the White House. Early,Trump said a one-on-one meeting withKim was “very, very good,” and he spoke of having an “excellent relationship” as they held talks Tuesday in Singapore about the possible denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. After about 40 minutes alone, except for interpreters, Trump and Kim each brought a small delegation of officials for more extensive talks. The U.S. side included Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser John Bolton and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly. “We will solve a big problem,” Trump said ahead of the main talks. Tuesday’s unprecedented first meeting of a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader began with Trump and Kim coming together in front of a background…

Commentary: No One on Earth Is More Prepared to Meet Kim Jong Un Than President Trump

Trump - Kim Summit

by Jeffery Rendall   It’s always curious to watch the lead-up to a high-profile boxing match; the more you see the respective camps maneuver the more you recognize the “show” isn’t really about the fight itself. After all, two guys roped into a ring beating the stuffing out of each other isn’t all that interesting (except maybe in a morbid way) — it’s more like the media and fans are sizing up the opponents to determine who might best use his tools and technique to gain an advantage. Regardless, in the end it doesn’t matter. All the pre-event hype invariably leads to one of the participants laying on the canvas receiving the ten-count. Hours in the gym, skill and experience no doubt guided the winner. But let’s face it – it boils down to whomever was the tougher guy. The establishment media lead-up to President Donald Trump’s meeting with NORK dictator Kim Jong-un this week sounded a lot like a boxing match promotion. Trump threw the talkers into a tizzy last week when he said he wasn’t doing much preparation for his face-to-face with Kim. Essentially Trump suggested he’ll go with his instincts when the time comes. Trump’s hostile critics were…

OFF THE RECORD: President Trump Singlehandedly Delivers the Most Eyebrow-Raising G7 Trade Summit Ever

OFF THE RECORD

After years of mundanity surrounding the G7 world trade summit – the once-a-year snore-fest where the six, or seven, (or eight) leaders of the West come together as frenemies to see who can pick each others’ pockets most stealthily – we were treated to perhaps the most entertaining piece of political theater the world has ever seen. The excitement began when President Trump arrived. Last year, you’ll remember he made headlines over his ‘step aside‘ moment caught on camera. And you might also remember that – apart from the typical preening over ‘climate change’ initiatives like the Paris Accord (and the United States’ refusal to sign on) – the meeting came and went without much notice. Heck – even the protesters didn’t even bother to show up. The reason why is simple enough: this was President Trump’s first visit, and I suspect he wanted to do two things: (1) Observe; and (2) Give our trading partners a chance to do the right thing on their own. After all, that’s what friends do, right? Well, it’s a year later, and President Trump has been very vocal – some might even say notorious! – about his positions on trade. – America First –…

Nunes Accuses DOJ Of ‘Obstruction’ In Battle Over FBI Informant Documents

Devin Nunes, Rod Rosenstein

by Chuck Ross   House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes is giving the Department of Justice until Tuesday to provide documents about an FBI informant used to spy on the Trump campaign. In a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein on Friday, Nunes accused the agency of “obstruction” and using “an array of tactics” to withhold the documents about the spy, who is believed to be former University of Cambridge professor Stefan Halper. In the letter, Nunes said he wants the documents provided to the Intelligence committee and “designated staff” instead of only to the so-called Gang of Eight, as the Justice Department has requested. “DOJ continues to obfuscate and delay its production using an array of tactics, such as incorrectly categorizing the requested documents as Gang-of-Eight-level material in order to limit access,” Nunes wrote, according to Fox News. “Such conduct by DOJ is unacceptable because the Gang-of-Eight is a legal fiction that has no basis outside of the confines of Presidential approval and reporting of covert actions.” The Gang of Eight consists of the Republican and Democratic leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees, as well as Speaker Paul Ryan and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. Italy’s New Interior Minister Demands Boat Carrying Migrants To Turn Around

Matteo Salvini

by Gabrielle Okun   Italy’s new interior minister demanded that a rescue boat carrying migrants from Libya turn around, according to the BBC Sunday. Matteo Salvini, the new Italian interior minister from the “Lega Nord” party, said a boat carrying migrants in the Mediterranean Saturday should instead go to Malta, BBC reported. The boat called the Aquarius was carrying 639 migrants, including 123 minors, as well as seven women who were pregnant, the Daily Mail added. “Malta takes in nobody,” Salvini said. He argued that Malta is instead closer to Libya, so the boat should instead go there. “Saving lives at sea is a duty, but transforming Italy into an enormous refugee camp is not,” Salvini added on Facebook Monday. “Italy is done bowing its head and obeying. This time there’s someone saying no.” “Enough,” he added. Salvini previously told migrants to “pack their bags” because the good times are over during a rally in Northern Italy. Malta refused to take the migrants, arguing they have no legally obliged since the ship was already headed to a rescue center in Rome. UPDATE: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said Spain will accept the Aquarius. The ship will dock in Valencia, Spain, according to the BBC Monday. – – – Gabrielle Okun is a…

Diane Black Applauds University of Tennessee’s Decision to Keep Tuition Rates Flat in Chattanooga and Knoxville

Diane Black

The University of Tennessee’s decision Monday to freeze tuition rates for their Chattanooga and Knoxville campuses drew strong praise from gubernatorial candidate Rep. Diane Black (R-TN-06). “We need to keep higher education affordable for students in Tennessee. Not every student needs to go to college, but those that are shouldn’t be burdened by unreasonable debt as a result,” Black said in a statement, adding: I applaud the University of Tennessee System for taking a common-sense step to incentivize students to work hard and get their degree faster with less debt. As governor, I will work to make college degrees and trade certificates more affordable and attainable for all Tennesseans. And I’ll work to restore the governor as a voting member of the University of Tennessee Board of Trustees to make sure our higher education institutions receive the executive oversight they deserve. The university of Tennessee Subcommittee on Tuition, Fees and Financial Aid met on Monday to address tuition rates. While the subcommittee voted to keep the rates level at Chattanooga and Knoxville, students at the University of Tennessee, Martin will see a 3 percent increase. KnoxNews.com reporter Erica Breunlin noted that this will be the first time in 30 years that tuition rates…

China Watching Kim-Trump Summit Closely

President Donald Trump, President Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un

China may not be participating directly in the summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, but in some ways Beijing will be the invisible third party in the room. Like many countries in the region, China will be watching the Trump-Kim summit closely for signs of the possible impact the meeting could have on its interests. During the roller coaster run-up to the sit down, China has played a significant role. Analysts note Beijing’s participation in expansive international sanctions was a key factor in getting Kim to the negotiating table. Even though, Beijing has tapered off its enforcement in recent months. “China was participating in an unprecedented sanctions regime, very close to embargo, without Chinese participation it would be much less likely that North Korea’s government would’ve agreed to talk,” said Andrei Lankov, director of the Korea Risk Group, a provider of risk analysis, news and information on North Korea. Before Tuesday’s meeting, Xi Jinping met twice with Kim Jong Un. On Monday, China’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that Kim flew to Singapore on an Air China passenger jet. It did not clarify whether Beijing footed the bill, but that it provided the plane at…

Arrest of 114 Illegal Immigrant Workers in Ohio Has Landscapers Worried Over Immigration Raids

Landscape Worker

Landscaping businesses that are facing a severe labor shortage and increased demand for services are sweating over the federal government’s June 5 arrest of 114 illegal immigrant workers in Ohio, the Associated Press reported. People in the industry believe the raids will make it tougher to persuade Congress to allow more foreign workers into America for seasonal jobs. “I believe most of us are doing things the right way, but every company is going to be worried that they’re going to be raided,” said Joe Drake, who runs JFD Landscapes in Chardon, Ohio. Drake spent the past week in Chicago meeting with other seasonal employers to create a strategy to persuade Congress to ease restrictions on H2-B temporary visas. This year, a federal lottery for the first time determined which employers would get their allotment, initially capped at 66,000 workers until the Department of Homeland Security announced it would allow another 15,000 additional visas. The agents carried out raids at two separate locations of Corso’s Flower and Garden Center — one in Sandusky and the other in Castalia, The Tennessee Star reported last week. It was one of the largest such stings in years. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said it…

Yale Trustee Candidate Running On Platform Of Smashing Political Correctness

James Kirchick

by Rob Shimshock   A candidate for Yale University’s board of trustees is intent on smashing political correctness, particularly after the 2015 cultural appropriation scandal on campus. Yale graduate James Kirchick suggested that he saw the beginnings of leftist intolerance on campus when he noticed an underrepresentation of liberals in the school debate club, according to The College Fix. Kirchick announced his candidacy for Yale’s board of trustees in a Wall Street Journal column entitled “I’m Running to Restore Yale Values”. Kirchick cited Yale students’ viral surrounding and lecturing of former headmaster Nicholas Christakis after his wife, professor Erika Christakis, sent a campus-wide email in which she expressed skepticism that students had to be warned about “appropriate Halloween wear.” “When the university rewarded two of the mob’s leaders with a prestigious prize, something was deeply amiss,” Kirchick stated. “Further developments have only confirmed my worries. Yale ditched the title “master” on the ludicrous grounds that it is racist; a survey finds half the faculty approves of “trigger warnings” for readings and classroom discussions, and the number of campus administrators continues to swell while the cost of attending has increased to $70,000 a year.” The candidate also cited the yellow-light rating assigned to Yale by…

Tennessee GOP Slams ‘Two Faced’ Phil Bredesen for Taking Big Bucks From Chuck Schumer

Phil Bredesen, Chuck Schumer

The Tennessee Republican Party has already smacked Democrat Phil Bredesen for being “personally courted” to run for the US Senate by New York Democrat Chuck Schumer, now they’re going after Bredesen, with the help of the Washington Post, by pointing out that Schumer is “backing up the money truck to the Bredesen campaign.” Via the Washington Post, it seems Schumer’s group is planing to drop at least seven figures into Tennessee on Bredesen’s behalf. That would make Bredesen the best liberal Democrat Schumer’s D.C. money could be – and the exact opposite of the type of representation Tennessee chose when they helped to elect President Donald Trump. The top Senate Democratic super PAC plans to spend about $80 million to reserve fall airtime for television commercials in nine battleground states, a sizable early investment in pursuit of winning control of the Senate. Senate Majority PAC will soon secure post-Labor Day airtime in Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Tennessee and West Virginia, the group told The Washington Post. President Trump Feeling ‘Very Good’ About Upcoming Summit with Kim

New Sanctions on North Korea

by Steve Herman   President Donald Trump is in Singapore for his upcoming summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a meeting the U.S leader says he is feeling “very good” about. After stepping down from Air Force One Sunday, Trump was greeted by Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. WATCH: William Gallo’s video report from Singapore In response to a question from VOA News just before heading to Asia from the Group of Seven summit in Canada, Trump said “I really feel confident” about the unprecedented encounter between a sitting American president and a member of the family dynasty that has maintained iron-fist control over one of the world’s most reclusive countries for three generations. Trump added that he believed Kim, half the age of the American president, “wants to do something great for his people.” But he cautioned that Kim “won’t have that opportunity again” if the talks do not go well — describing this opportunity for…

Supremes Poised For Blockbuster Finish As Current Term Nears Conclusion

Supreme Court Justices

by Kevin Daley   As the U.S. Supreme Court approaches the conclusion of its 2017 – 2018 term, the justices are expected to release a deluge of decisions in the coming weeks, including marquee opinions addressing mandatory union dues, partisan gerrymandering, and President Donald Trump’s travel ban. As of this writing, there are 25 decisions outstanding. Among the remaining cases is one of the first argued this term, a partisan gerrymandering dispute arising from Wisconsin called Gill v. Whitford. It’s Maryland counterpart, Benisek v. Lamone, is also pending. Both cases ask the justices to declare politically-motivated line-drawing during the 10-year redistricting process unconstitutional. Gill involves a challenge to the entirety of Wisconsin’s state legislative district map, arguing it violates the Constitution’s First Amendment and its equal protection guarantees. The Benisek plaintiffs are challenging the boundaries of a single congressional district and make a slightly different First Amendment argument. The justices heard the Gill case in October and Benisek in March. During the Benisek argument, Justice Stephen Breyer suggested the Court package three pending partisan gerrymandering cases together and set them for re-argument next term. The request has lead some observers to speculate that the tribunal is deeply divided as to the resolution…

Kudlow: Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Betrayed Us, ‘Stabbed Us In The Back’

Larry Kudlow

by Robert Donachie   White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow said Sunday that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “stabbed” the U.S. “in the back” when he announced his nation will impose retaliatory tariffs against America. President Donald Trump, Trudeau and other leaders of the G7 nations — Britain, Canada, Japan, Italy and Germany –met for a two-day summit over the weekend to discuss the possibility of ending a potential trade war. “We had long night sessions. He (the president) was a participant. Not only did we play, we were in the communique. Team players, really, really, team players here to help the Western alliance and then Trudeau throws him under the bus with very harsh language,” Kudlow told Jake Tapper on CNN’s “State of the Union.”  “Jake, it was a betrayal. It was a kip diplomatic betrayal. That is not good, and we were close to negotiating a trade deal with Mr. Trudeau,” Kudlow said. Trudeau announced in a post-summit press conference that Canada is considering imposing tariffs against the U.S. if America does not back away from tariffs on steel and aluminum. “The United States has moved forward with significant tariffs on our steel and aluminum industry,” Trudeau said. “I highlighted that it was not helping in our renegotiation of…

Commentary: Congress Must Exercise Its Article I Power, Or It Will Be Deemed Irrelevant

Capitol building

by Printus LeBlanc   When the framers created the government, it was split into three coequal branches; the Congressional, Executive, and Judicial branches. Articles I through III describe the duties, responsibilities, and powers assigned to each branch of the government. However, one of those branches seems to be the redheaded stepchild of the government lately. If you’ve been paying attention to the news over the last several years, you know the House of Representatives, and more recently the Senate, have been engaged in a fierce battle with executive branch agencies over documents about congressional investigations. The agencies routinely ignore requests from Congress or flat out lie when questioned under oath. Unfortunately, this is nothing new. In 2013, the IRS admitted it was guilty of targeting conservative groups when it apologized for the act. Members of Congress were furious and immediately launched investigations. The IRS employee at the center of the targeting scandal, Lois Lerner, pled the Fifth Amendment right to non-incrimination when called before committees. The committees were left with no alternative but to subpoena documents. In a pattern that has become all too familiar, the requested documents were destroyed after the subpoenas were issued. The IRS said the emails were…

Got ‘Scam?’ – Dairy Farmers Are Getting Milked By The USDA’s Checkoff Program

Dairy Cow

by Andrew Kerr    – Dairy farmers are forced to pay a tax that funds nonprofits dedicated to boosting dairy sales  – One dairy farmer says the nonprofits are doing a “pretty piss poor job”  – The nonprofit that takes the most pays its top executives salaries so lavish they may violate IRS rules Pennsylvania dairy farmer Brenda Cochran has weathered over $600,000 in losses to her mid-sized farm from a nearly 40 percent drop in milk prices since 2014. Further compounding Cochran’s financial strain is her forced participation in the Department of Agriculture’s dairy checkoff program, which siphons up to $4,000 from her bottom line each year to fund a network of nonprofit organizations tasked with promoting the dairy industry through advertisements and the development of new products. The organizations that receive her federally-mandated checkoff payments told Cochran that the program has had a “huge impact” on boosting dairy sales, primarily through the creation of new products for major fast food chains. But Cochran isn’t buying it. She says the organizations she’s forced to fund are doing a “pretty piss poor job” doing anything to support struggling dairy farmers. The nonprofit that receives the largest share of dairy checkoff dollars has used the funds to…

Top Clinton Ally: Matt Drudge Is ‘Evil Incarnate’

Neera Taden

by Peter Hasson   Influential news aggregator Matt Drudge is the embodiment of evil itself, according to the head of a top liberal think tank. Center for America Progress President Neera Tanden, a close ally of failed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, leveled the accusation while appearing on a National Review podcast, The Jamie Weinstein Show. “Evil incarnate,” Tanden said when asked her opinion of Drudge, who runs the eponymous Drudge Report. Drudge was the first to report in 1998 on former President Bill Clinton’s affair with White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Tanden also described former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon as “smart but evil.” Tanden’s organization has had its own sexual misconduct issues, BuzzFeed reported in April. Tanden later shocked Center for America Progress employees when she outed a sexual harassment victim in an all-staff meeting, according to another BuzzFeed report. Tanden, who advised Hillary Clinton during her failed 2016 presidential campaign, was slated to be secretary of Health and Human Services if Clinton had won the election. – – – Peter Hasson is a reporter at Daily Caller News Foundation. Follow Hasson on Twitter @PeterJHasson.                       Content created by The Daily Caller News…

Unthinkable: Democratic Congressman Backs Trump in Trade Dispute with Canada’s Trudeau

Raja Krishnamoorthi

by Henry Rodgers   Illinois Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi joined President Donald Trump and White House advisers in blasting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for feuding with Trump during the G7 summit, in a statement released Sunday. “While I have serious concerns about President Trump’s approach to trade talks with Canada, Prime Minister Trudeau has placed our trade relationship with Canada at risk by publicly feuding with President Trump on the world stage,” Krishnamoorthi said in a statement posted on his website. The Democratic congressman said Trudeau is “sabotaging” world leaders to fight instead of getting things accomplished. Krishnamoorthi’s comments come as Trudeau criticized Trump after he left the G7 summit, saying that Canada would retaliate if the U.S. does not remove the recently implemented tariffs. Trudeau trashed Trump’s decision to place tariffs on steel and aluminum from U.S. allies, calling it “insulting.” “Prime Minister Trudeau is sabotaging that cause by driving both sides into their corners instead of encouraging a more diplomatic dialogue. Prime Minister Trudeau may reap some political benefit through feuding with President Trump, but by engaging with the President on the terms he has so far, instead of on mutually productive ones, he is imperiling the economic well-being of millions of Canadians and Americans,” Krishnamoorthi’s…

Tucker Carlson, Rob Bluey

Carlson received the prestigious Salvatori Prize, recognizing his work to uphold and advance the principles of America’s founding. The full video, plus an edited transcript of the interview, is below.   Rob Bluey: It is a true honor to celebrate the work that you’ve done, and I want to begin with the advice that you left this audience on how conservatives can take back the culture. You had two pieces of advice. Tell us about them. Tucker Carlson: Well, have more children. I grew up in a world where it was considered embarrassing to have more than two children. I don’t think that’s the case now among middle-class, upper middle-class people, but it was. [ The liberal Left continue to push their radical agenda against American values. UK’s Theresa May Orders Retreat to Sort Out Brexit Details

Theresa May

Reuters   Prime Minister Theresa May will gather together squabbling British ministers gather country residence after this month’s European Union summit to settle on details of a much-anticipated Brexit policy paper. May has yet to agree on some of the fundamental details of what type of trading relationship she wants to have with the European Union after Britain leaves next March. As a result, talks with the EU have all but ground to ahalt, raising fears among businesses and in Brussels that Britain could end up crashing out of the bloc without an agreed-upon deal. “There’s going to be a lot happening over the next few weeks. You know, people want us to get on with it, and that’s exactly what we’re doing,” May told reporters on her way to a G-7 summit in Canada. May will look to the June 28-29 EU summit as a chance to pin down some of the most troublesome details of Britain’s exit agreement and pave the way for more intensive talks on the all-important future economic partnership between the world’s fifth-largest economy and the world’s biggest trading bloc. But senior ministers are still at odds about what type of post-Brexit customs arrangement will be…

Commentary: The Absurdity of Keynesian Economics

John Maynard Keynes

by Roger W. Garrison   The economics of John Maynard Keynes as taught to university sophomores for the last several decades is now nearly defunct in theory but not in practice. Keynes’s 1936 book, The General Theory of Employment, Interest, and Money, portrayed the market as fundamentally unstable and touted government as the stabilizer. The stability that allegedly lay beyond the market’s reach was to be supplied by the federal government’s macroeconomic policymakers—the president (with guidance from his Council of Economic Advisers), the Congress, and the Federal Reserve. The acceptance in the economics profession of fundamentalist Keynesianism peaked in the 1960s. In recent decades, enthusiasm for Keynes has waxed and waned as proponents have tried to get new ideas from the General Theory or to read their own ideas into it. And although the federal government has long since become a net supplier of macroeconomic instability, the institutions and policy tools that were fashioned to conform to the Keynesian vision have become an integral part of our economic and political environment. A national income accounting system, devised with an eye to Keynesian theory, allowed statisticians to chart the changes in the macroeconomy. Dealing in terms of an economy-wide total, or aggregate, policy…

Phil Bredesen and Tyson Foods Helped Shelbyville Become an Employment Magnet For Somali Refugees

Phil Bredesen

From the inception of the federal Refugee Admissions Program in 1980 until 2003, the first year of Phil Bredesen’s first term as governor of Tennessee, only a handful of Somali refugees were resettled in Tennessee by the federal government. That all changed in 2003. Between 2003 and 2011, Bredesen’s last year as governor, 1,866 Somali refugees were resettled in Tennessee by federal resettlement contractors. During that same time period over 9,000 refugees of multiple ethnicities were brought to Tennessee by federal contractors. The numbers do not, however, account for secondary migrants who are first resettled in other states or other parts of Tennessee but then relocate to follow friends, relatives or jobs and join the growing ethnic enclaves in a different location. “[T]he simple action of offering hundreds of job openings at the local chicken processing plant” according to former Shelbyville Times-Gazette reporter Brian Mosely, explains in part, what drew Somali refugees to his hometown. Increasing the supply of Somalis and other refugee workers was facilitated by then governor Phil Bredesen’s treatment of Tennessee’s refugee resettlement program. In 2007, Mosely wrote a five-part, award-winning series about the arrival of Somalis to Shelbyville.  One of the stories connecting Somalis to the town’s Tyson Foods plant…

Trump Blames Trade Deficits On Past US Leaders: ‘You Can Go Back 50 Years’

President Trump

by Will Racke   President Donald Trump on Saturday offered harsh words for the people he holds responsible for U.S. trade deficits — past American leaders. Speaking at a press briefing at the G7 summit, Trump blamed a generation of U.S. politicians for making deals that have led to large deficits with America’s most important trading partners. “I blame our past leaders for allowing this to happen,” Trump said, adding that his immediate predecessor, former President Barack Obama, was just one in a long line of presidents who have supposedly led the U.S. astray on trade. “You can go back 50 years, frankly,” he said. Trump’s address to the media came after meetings with the leaders of the group of seven large economies — the U.S. plus Canada, France, Britain, Italy, Germany and Japan — in Quebec on Friday. This year’s summit has been marked by deep discord over the Trump administration’s recent actions on trade, which include protectionist measures against not just China, but also the G7 nations and other key trading partners such as Mexico. [ RELATED: Mexico Responds To Trump’s Metal Tariffs With Import Taxes On US Goods ] Ahead of the summit, Trump announced the U.S. would not exempt Canada, Japan…

It’s Time to Let Supersonic Flight Soar Again

Concorde airplane

by Jason Snead   Before he became the first American to orbit the Earth, John Glenn was famous for another pioneering achievement. In 1957, he became the first man to fly across the country faster than the speed of sound, traveling from California to New York in just three hours and 23 minutes. Glenn’s aptly named “Project Bullet” seemed at the time to herald a new age of supersonic flight, in which passengers could cross the globe in an afternoon, thanks to American ingenuity and technological prowess. Yet, 61 years later, supersonic commercial aviation remains an unrealized dream. [ The liberal Left continue to push their radical agenda against American values. The good news is there is a solution. Find out more ] Beginning in 1969, the Concorde proved that routine commercial supersonic flight was technically feasible. It carried passengers at an altitude high enough to see the curvature of the Earth and flew them fast enough to outrun a sunset. But for all its splendor, the Concorde had problems. It was an expensive, government-subsidized gas guzzler that flew just one commercially viable route—shuttling wealthy passengers back and forth between New York and London. When it was retired from service in 2003, it left…

America’s Right Turn, Chapter 3: The Recipe for Creating a New Mass Movement

Tea Party Washington, DC

by Richard A. Viguerie   This is an excerpt from Chapter 3 (“The Recipe for Creating a New Mass Movement”) of America’s Right Turn: How Conservatives Used New and Alternative Media to Take Power, by Richard A. Viguerie and David Franke. In this chapter we ask:  How can a grassroots political movement emerge and succeed in our media-dominated world?  For answers, we use the revolutions of 1517 and 1776 (Chapters 1 and 2) as laboratory examples. Then, in coming chapters, we will show how these factors resulted in the emergence, growth, and success of the conservative movement in the second half of the 20th century. In this first excerpt from the chapter, we consider two factors in creating a new mass movement—“Issues that motivate” and “A dedicated vanguard.” As you read the excerpts from this chapter, ask yourself these questions:  Did these same factors contribute to the Trump Revolution of 2016?  Indeed, did his election in 2016 signify the emergence of a new mass movement, or was it rather the evolving of the conservative movement?  I invite you to share your thoughts in the comments section that follows this article.   Chapter 3: The Recipe for Creating a New Mass Movement The media…

Commentary: Three Myths of Socialism Debunked by Venezuela’s Nightmare

Venezuela

by Barry Brownstein   History provides endless examples of vicious despots ruling under various collectivist ideologies. Hitler, Mao, Stalin, Pol Pot, and – today – Kim Jong-un and Nicolás Maduro may have had different names for their collectivist ideologies, but they have resulted in the deaths of countless millions of people and endless misery for the survivors. Alarmingly, a majority of millennials would prefer to live under socialism or communism. Economically illiterate and ahistorical, they cling to the fantasy that if the right people came to power, they would live in their imagined utopia where society would be ordered according to their whims and wishes. Reporter Anatoly Kurmanaev has lived in and covered Venezuela for the past five years. He describes his experience of the Venezuelan meltdown in a recent essay for the Wall Street Journal, “The Tragedy of Venezuela.” Kurmanaev grew up in Russia in the 1990s and witnessed “corruption, violence and degradation.” “Venezuela’s collapse has been far worse than the chaos” he experienced in Russia. In my FEE essay, “Venezuela’s Road to Literal Serfdom,” I cover delusions people have about socialism. Through the eyes of Kurmanaev’s reporting, we can further explore myths about socialism still embraced by many. Myth 1: Collectivists Care More About the Poor No…

Sponsor of 2001 Bill That Allowed Illegals to Get Drivers Licenses in Tennessee Claimed It Was Only for ‘A Properly Documented Immigrant,’

Diane Black

Tennessee Jobs Now, a SuperPAC that supports Randy Boyd in the Tennessee Governor’s race, has been running a television commercial that hits Diane Black for a 2001 vote as a member of the Tennessee General Assembly that resulted in illegal aliens being able to get driver licenses. Black does not deny that she voted for the bill, SB1266, nor does she deny that the result of the bill was that it allowed illegal aliens to obtain drivers licenses in Tennessee. She has subsequently explained that the result that illegal aliens were able to obtain drivers licenses in Tennessee after the law was passed was “an unintended consequence of a bill that was supposed to allow legal immigrants to get licenses.” A cursory reading of SB1266, as it was passed by the Tennessee General Assembly and signed into law by Gov. Sundquist, does not give the impression its purpose was to allow illegal aliens to obtain drivers licenses. Indeed, the words “illegal,” “alien,” “immigrant,” “documented immigrant,” and “undocumented immigrant” appear nowhere in the law: SB1266, An Act to amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 55-50-321, relative to information required to be submitted to obtain a driver license Section 1: Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 55-50-321(c)(1), is amended by…

Worship on the Square 2018, Murfreesboro

MURFREESBORO, Tennessee–Five thousand Christians participated in a celebration of faith here on the square in Murfreesboro hosted by the Experience Church Friday night. It was the second consecutive  year that people from Murfreesboro, Middle Tennessee, and around the country traveled to attend the local event. The Tennessee Star spoke with Corey Trimble the pastor of Experience Church, and asked how the Night of Worship on the Square came about. “Most of that is Kyle Elkins,” Trimble explained. “This is our second year in a row. We talked to the mayor, who we have a great relationship with.We talked to the city and the county. They shut down the whole square for us,” he added. “Last year we had about 4,000 people. This year it looks like it will be about five,” the pastor said.   “The city’s very accomodating. They get all the local businesses involved. They give people discounts on their food and their merchandise. This year they give 10 percent of all themoney that is spent tonight to Feed America First,” he noted. Trimble then explained the evening’s events. “It’s mostly worship. We take communion together and we do baptisms,” he noted, adding that the event has a positive…

GOP Senate Nominee in PA Blasts Democrat Bob Casey Over Celebration of Philadelphia’s Sanctuary City Status

Lou Barletta, Bob Casey

Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA), who is running for the U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania blasted both the mayor of Philadelphia and his own opponent, Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA), over a viral video of the mayor dancing as Philadelphia joined the ranks of sanctuary cities which give safe harbor to illegal immigrants, including those with criminal records, thanks to a decision handed down by a federal district judge. Needless to say, I think @janeslusser and @PhillyMayor are pretty excited about today’s ruling affirming Philadelphia as a Sanctuary City. pic.twitter.com/gdnnjZT9ps — Steve Preston (@StevePrest) June 6, 2018 “That’s really a sad video to watch,” Barletta told Stuart Varney on Fox Business Network, “Especially for me.” “I don’t think the families of the victims in Philadelphia who were victims of illegal immigrants… I don’t think they’re dancing,” Barletta said. Barletta went on to cite the family of a child allegedly raped by an illegal immigrant in Philadelphia, saying he “is challenging Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) in November, and that he and Casey — the son of a former Pennsylvania governor — are “on opposite ends” of the sanctuary city and illegal immigration issue.” “That’s going to be a big issue in this election,” Barletta said.…

GOP Lawmakers in House Pass $15 Billion Spending Rescission Package

US Capitol

by Rachel del Guidice   The House of Representatives voted 210-206 Thursday night to claw back $15 billion in appropriated spending, making good on the lead of President Donald Trump, who submitted the rescission request last month. “The administration applauds today’s passage of H.R. 3, the Spending Cuts to Expired and Unnecessary Programs Act, in the U.S. House of Representatives and urges the Senate to quickly act on the legislation,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement released after the House vote Thursday night. The measure cancels expired funding from the Children’s Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, among other federal programs and will have a “$1 billion or so impact on the government’s budget deficit,” the Associated Press reported. Pulse Nightclub Shooting Victims Sue Police

Pulse Night Club

by Molly Prince   Some victims and family members of the Pulse nightclub massacre filed a lawsuit in a Florida federal court on Thursday against the responding police officers and the city of Orlando for violating the Constitution and neglecting to do more to stop the shooter. The lawsuit names Officer Adam Gruler, claiming that he knowingly “abandoned his post” to ensure his own safety and demonstrated “a total lack of concern for the dozens of patrons in the club, whom he was personally charged with protecting.” Gruler, an Orlando police officer who was working an extra-duty shift when the shooting occurred, was the first to exchange gunfire with the shooter and was subsequently hailed as a hero, reports The Washington Post. He was honored with the “Pulse Valor Award” by the Orlando Police Department and later invited to the White House’s State Of The Union address by Democratic Rep. Val Demings of Florida. Defendants in the lawsuit also include 30 unnamed police officers who allegedly either remained outside the club, thereby failing to neutralize the shooter, or unlawfully detained uninjured patrons for hours after fleeing gunfire. The City of Orlando is also listed as a defendant and is accused of violating the…
