State Sen. Sandra Williams (D-21-Cuyahoga) announced early Monday that she is running for mayor of Cleveland, Ohio.

Williams is currently in her second term as state senator and previously served in the Ohio House of Representatives. She has also served in a variety of other public positions, including as a corrections officer, probation and parole officer, mediator for the state and a legislative aide.

“Today, Cleveland faces challenges that have plagued us for decades, and the people who have always struggled the most in our city are still the ones with the steepest hill to climb,” Williams said in a video announcing her candidacy. “It doesn’t have to be this way. Together, we can bring back our hopes and dreams for a better future. I have been tested, and I know I am the woman to deliver the change to make it happen.”

Williams is a ranking member on several Senate committees, including the Senate Energy and Public Utilities Committee, Senate Workforce and Higher Education Committee and Senate Ways and Means Committee.

Although Williams has not yet clarified her platform, she has expressed a desire for economic, racial, and gender equality, as well as education that is “within reach of every student.”

“I see a city of opportunity where economic, racial and gender inequality is extinguished, where a good education is within reach of every student, where fear and crime have plummeted and where young women and girls across Cleveland can see that their futures are unlimited,” Williams said.

Williams is also a member of the Ohio Democratic Women’s Caucus, NAACP and the Black Women’s Political Action Committee.

“As we did 50 years ago, we will break down old barriers, by electing the first African American woman as mayor,” William said. “Success is never achieved alone, but together all things are possible.”
