Amid speculation that several power brokers could enter Michigan’s 2022 gubernatorial race, a conservative commentator declared her candidacy Thursday.

“I am excited to announce that I am running for Governor to get Michigan back on track,” Tudor Dixon said on Twitter. “We will restore our state and help Michiganders build their American Dream once again! Let’s do this Michigan!”

She has often slammed scandal-plagued Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) for imposing some of the strictest COVID-19 lockdown measures in the country. Dixon apparently discussed that issue with former President Donald J. Trump earlier this month.

“It was great to see Pres. Trump last night. He’s very concerned about getting Michiganders back to work and getting our students back in school,” she said.

“Whitmer failed to fix the roads, failed to control the virus, & refuses to follow rules she forced on everyone else. She has to go,” she continued, foreshadowing her run for office.

Dixon describes herself as a “former steel sales exec, working mom of four girls, [and] cancer survivor.”

Whitmer is currently embroiled in controversy over a secret March trip to visit her father in Florida, during the same time when she insisted it was unsafe to travel due to the pandemic. She flew on a private jet, the cost of which was more than $27,500, and was paid for by her inaugural nonprofit, Michigan Transition 2019. The legality of that arrangement remains unclear.

Dixon is only the second candidate to announce her run for the Republican nomination in the state.

Political outsider Austin Chenge announced his bid in February.

But some heavy-hitters are expected to jump into the race, too.

Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig has resigned from his post, and is expected to mount a bid against Whitmer.

According to Fox News, John James, who ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2018 and against Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and again unsuccessfully against Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI) in 2020, could also enter the race.

There is also speculation that GOP Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel, niece of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), could challenge Whitmer.
