Amazon Announces Construction of Solar Farm in East Georgia

Amazon announced on Wednesday that the organization will construct a solar farm in east Georgia, the first of its kind in the state.

The project in Burke County will supply energy for Amazon’s corporate offices, fulfillment centers, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers, according to a press release from the group.

In total, the organization announced 18 new utility-scale wind and solar energy projects in the United States and Europe. According to the group, the new projects are aimed to “reduce our carbon emissions and address the climate crisis.”

The company contends that it will power its business operations with completely renewable energy by 2025.

“We are moving quickly and deliberately to reduce our carbon emissions and address the climate crisis,” said Kara Hurst, vice president of worldwide sustainability at Amazon. “Significant investments in renewable energy globally are an important step in delivering on The Climate Pledge, our commitment to reach net-zero carbon by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. Renewable energy projects also bring new investment, green jobs, and advance the decarbonization of the electricity systems in communities around the world.”

Based on a map provided by the group, the company has invested in similar projects in almost each region of the world.

The project seemingly aims to complete a prediction for 2022 offered by Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Werner Vogels.

“As developers, we are trained to think about how to optimize our architectures for factors like security, performance, reliability, and cost. In 2022, you can add sustainability to that list. What we will begin to see in the coming years is developers taking an active role in building sustainability-conscious architectures that take into account not just the problems they are solving, but the planet as well,” he wrote
