Republicans Outpace Democrats in Maricopa County Voter Registrations

Republicans continue to outpace Democrats in changes to voter registrations, according to information released by the Maricopa County Recorder’s Office.

According to the data, in January alone, more than 1,300 individuals in the country switched their party identification to “Republican,” compared to approximately 900 who changed to “Democrat.”

More individuals in Maricopa County have switched to the Republican Party than Democratic for at least five consecutive months, as President Joe Biden’s approval numbers continue to decline.

The numbers presented in the state’s largest population center could be impactful in near elections, as Maricopa County residents make up more than 60 percent of Arizona’s registered voters. In 2020, former President Donald Trump lost the state by a little more than 10,000 votes. In Maricopa, Biden won by roughly 45,000 votes, offsetting his poor performance in rural parts of the state.

Furthermore, the trend could be indicative of growing opposition to Biden and congressional Democrats. According to a poll released late last year, a majority of voters are not happy with his job performance. Biden only held 42 percent approval. Additionally, only 35 percent of Independents approved, a key voting block in the state’s election.

In November, the state will host several key elections: governor, State Legislature seats, attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer, U.S. House of Representatives, and U.S. Senate, in addition to many other local races.

In particular, Republicans are targeting Democratic Senator Mark Kelly, who is often compared to his moderate counterpart, Senator Kyrsten Sinema.

“Kelly is no moderate. He is a far-Left senator who will do whatever Joe Biden and Washington Democrat leadership tell him to in order to pass a radically liberal agenda,” said National Republican Senatorial Committee Press Secretary Katharine Cooksey, after Kelly supported a move to change the filibuster.
