Wisconsin Democratic Senate Candidate Mandela Barnes Reaffirms Support to Abolish Filibuster amid SCOTUS Leak

Mandela Barnes, a Democrat running to represent Wisconsin in the U.S. Senate, utilized a leaked document from the Supreme Court to reiterate his call for an end to the filibuster.

The document from the Court was an initial draft from Justice Samuel Alito that suggested the Court favors overturning Roe v. Wade, the landmark ruling that federally legalized abortion across the country.

However, the ruling is not final. Justices can often switch their vote as the deliberation process continues.

“The Supreme Court is reportedly voting to strike down Roe v. Wade. The Senate must immediately act to eliminate the filibuster and protect abortion rights and access to reproductive health care,” Barnes said.

“Access to abortion should be a right – not a privilege. Wealthy people have always been able to access abortions. If SCOTUS overturns Roe, it is women of color, working-class women, and victims of abuse who will suffer. People’s lives will be lost,” he added.

Notably, if the Supreme Court opts to adopt the view presented in the draft opinion, abortion would not become illegal on a federal level. Rather, state lawmakers and residents of each individual state would be allowed to pass their own form of laws relating to the matter.

Senator Ron Johnson, the Republican incumbent, blasted the individual who leaked the document, a dramatic break in Supreme Court privacy that has not been paralleled in recent times.

“The goal of this unprecedented breach is to intimidate sitting Supreme Court justices. This is yet another example of how the radical left intends to ‘fundamentally transform’ America,” Johnson said.

“Undermine our judicial system, open our borders, drive gasoline prices to record levels, 40-year high inflation, and spark a crime wave. They are fundamentally destroying our country – they must be stopped.”
