Shelby County Deputies Shoot Man Who Hit Them with Car

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating after Shelby County sheriff’s deputies shot and injured a man who allegedly attempted to run them over with his car.

The incident occurred Monday night.

TBI says officers encountered a man in a car after being called to investigate a disturbance in Cordova.

“Initial reports indicate that shortly after 9 p.m. two deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office encountered a man in a vehicle as they responded to a disturbance call in the 9200 block of Durhamshire Drive,” the state law enforcement agency said in a release.

“According to preliminary reports from the scene, during the encounter the driver hit one of the deputies with his vehicle resulting in both deputies firing their service weapons into the car, striking the driver,” TBI said. “The driver was transported to an area hospital for treatment. Both deputies were hospitalized with non-critical injuries. ”

“TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews,” the agency said. “Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her further review and consideration.”

As of early Tuesday morning, the suspect in the incident had been identified, and a status update provided.

“SCSO has identified Charlie Gibson, 23, of Memphis as the suspect in this incident. He remains in critical condition,” the sheriff’s office said.

Tuesday night, Gibson reportedly remained in critical condition, while both deputies, who remain unidentified, had been released from the hospital.

TBI said its only role is to act as a “fact-finder” in the case, and does not investigate or decide whether officers were justified in shooting the suspect.

No further updates were provided.
