Democrat Attorney General Candidate Meets Florida’s State Matching Threshold

Florida Attorney General Democrat candidate Daniel Uhlfelder announced on Twitter that his campaign reached the threshold to achieve matching state funds. Uhlfelder was also the notable individual who patrolled Florida’s beaches dressed as the Grim Reaper protesting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R).

“BIG NEWS: Thanks to everyone who donated to our campaign – we have now unlocked statewide matching funds!” Uhlfelder said on Twitter.

However, Uhlfelder noted in the official press release making the announcement that there is the real possibility of Democrats being an “electoral liability,” based on his other Democrat primary opponents not submitting “the request to receive matching funds through the general election.”

The release continued, saying, “Should either of Uhlfelder’s primary opponents receive the nomination, leaving this money on the table while Ashley Moody receives it would be an electoral liability for Democrats.”

Uhlfelder’s campaign is noted by being anti-Moody, anti-DeSantis, and claimed to be anti-corporations.

“I’m taking on utility companies, oil and gas corporations, corporate real estate, developers, and property insurance companies, and accessing these public matching funds will, allow us to spread that message even further,” Uhlfelder said in a prepared statement.

The COVID pandemic is also a large part of his campaign platform.

“And in 2020, when I watched my neighbors dying as a result of a deadly pandemic, I put on a costume and walked the beaches to encourage people to stay home,” Uhlfelder said on his campaign website. “My activism generated national news, and retaliation from the governor who wanted to silence me for expressing my First Amendment rights to try to keep the people of Florida safe.”

He touts his chops when it comes to environmental and social justice activism.

Incumbent Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) is blowing all of the Democrat opponents out of the water. As recently as May 2022, Moody raised nearly $500,000 in one month, which raised her total cash on hand to over $4.5 million.

The other Democrats include Aramis Ayala and Jim Lewis. Lewis announced his candidacy in October 2021 and has been involved in Florida’s political landscape since 1981. Ayala previously served as a state attorney in Orlando, where she infamously dropped charges against an illegal alien who went on to kill two Floridians.
