TN-5 GOP Congressman Andy Ogles Votes for Kevin McCarthy’s Speakership Bid During 12th Round of Voting

Newly-elected Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles (R-TN-05) voted for California Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R-CA-20) in the House of Representatives House Speaker race during the chamber’s 12th round of voting on Friday.

“On behalf of my colleagues who have been negotiating in good faith and as an act of good faith to my colleagues, McCarthy,” Ogles said as he cast his vote for the California congressman. The chamber applauded, following Ogles vote.

During the 12th round of voting, McCarthy garnered 213 votes – still shy of the necessary number to win the speaker’s race. The 12th round also saw Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY-08), the incoming House Democratic leader, winning 211 votes, Republican Congressman Jim Jordan (R-OH-04) receiving 4 votes, and Republican Congressman Kevin Hern (R-OK-01) garnering 3 votes.

The seven Republican representatives who voted against McCarthy in the twelfth round of voting include Andy Biggs (R-AZ-05), Lauren Boebert (R-CO-03), Eli Crane (R-AZ-02), Matt Gaetz (R-FL-01), Bob Good (R-VA-05), Andy Harris (R-MD-01), and Matt Rosendale (R-MT-02).

Ogles, who had voted against McCarthy since the first day of voting on Tuesday, was joined in switching his vote for McCarthy by the following representatives: Dan Bishop (R-NC-08), Josh Brecheen (R-OK-02), Michael Cloud (R-TX-27), Andrew Clyde (R-GA-09), Byron Donalds (R-FL-19), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL-13), Mary Miller (R-IL-15),Ralph Norman (R-SC-05), Scott Perry (R-PA-10), Chip Roy (R-TX-21), Keith Self (R-TX-03), Victoria Spartz (R-IN-05), and Paul Gosar (R-AZ-09).

Ogles’ vote for McCarthy came one day after the pair was seen engaging in an animated conversation in the house chamber, The Tennessee Star previously reported.

Throughout this week, many prominent Republican figures – including former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence – have urged GOP representatives to vote for McCarthy.

Tennessee Congressman John Rose (R-TN-06) also urged his colleagues to vote for McCarthy’s speakership bid.

“Now is the time to unite behind the proven conservative leader who is endorsed by President Trump and the majority of our conference knows and supports, Kevin McCarthy, and get to work on behalf of the American People,” Rose released in a Thursday evening statement.

THIS is an important story. The media needs to ‘get this right’ when it comes to reporting this story. Rep. Ogles did NOT just ‘cave’ today. Ogles and the others who ‘switched’ their votes today, did so after receiving important concessions from McCarthy. NEWSMAX tonight (Rob Schmitt’s show at 6:00 p.m., Spectrum cable channel 198) did a fine job explaining all of this. In my opinion, what Ogles and the others did this week was worth doing for the gains in the legislative process that have now been achieved. It’s now time to swear in the new Republican Congress and get to work.
