NASA Astronauts to be Stranded for 6 More Months by Boeing

NASA.gov NASA will return Boeing’s Starliner to Earth without astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams aboard the spacecraft, the agency announced Saturday. The uncrewed return allows NASA and Boeing to continue gathering testing data on Starliner during its upcoming flight home, while also not accepting more risk than necessary for its crew. Wilmore and Williams, who flew to the International Space Station in June aboard NASA’s Boeing Crew Flight Test, have been busy supporting station research, maintenance, and Starliner system testing and data analysis, among other activities. “Spaceflight is risky, even at its safest and most routine. A test flight, by nature, is neither safe, nor routine. The decision to keep Butch and Suni aboard the International Space Station and bring Boeing’s Starliner home uncrewed is the result of our commitment to safety: our core value and our North Star,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “I’m grateful to both the NASA and Boeing teams for all their incredible and detailed work.” READ THE FULL STATEMENT

Arkansas Supreme Court Blocks Abortion-Rights Initiative

Washington Examiner The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the state’s rejection of petition signatures for an abortion-rights ballot initiative on Thursday, blocking the proposal from heading to the polls on Election Day in November. The ruling affirms the decision from Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston to reject the ballot measure because the group spearheading the effort failed to disclose critical information about the paid canvassers hired to collect citizen signatures.  The proposed abortion amendment would have prohibited the state legislature from passing an abortion ban within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, approximately the halfway mark in a typical 40-week pregnancy.  READ THE FULL STORY

Leftist UK Gov’t Reportedly Looking at Restoring ‘Free Movement’ for Under 30s EU Migrants

Breitbart The recently-installed Labour Party government in the UK is facing accusations of plotting to betray Brexit by reportedly considering a reinstitution of the open borders “free movement of people” with the European Union for those under the age of 30. A report from paper of record The Times of London has claimed that Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s government is mulling a deal with Brussels that would allow EU nationals under 30 to live and work in the UK for up to three years, and the same for young Britons seeking to move to the bloc. The move would reportedly come as a compromise measure amid the left-wing government’s desire to “reset” relations with Brussels, including a desire to see trade barriers reduced between Britain and the EU and clear obstacles for British professionals across the Channel. Abortion Initiative to Appear on November Ballot in Montana

NBC Montana Montana Secretary of State Christi Jacobsen on Tuesday certified that Constitutional Initiative 128, the proposal to create a specific protection for abortion rights in the Montana Constitution, has received the required number of signatures and can appear on the November ballot. The announcement, two days before an Aug. 22 deadline to certify ballot issues, launches the multi-month fight over whether to solidify abortion access in Montana into a new phase. Similar campaigns in other states, including Arizona and Missouri, have also recently received certification to bring the issue to voters this fall. While abortion is currently legal in Montana under the state Constitution’s right of privacy, backers of the proposal say it will further safeguard access in a national legal landscape roiled by the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Mars May Hold Large Reserves of Water

Washington Examiner Mars‘s crusty interior may harbor massive reservoirs of water, enough to fill an ocean, according to a recent study of seismic data. Scientists have long though that Mars’s surface was once covered by water, most likely stretching across at least one third of the terrain in a massive northern ocean. But the water dried up a millennia ago, and those studying the red planet have debated whether the water simply evaporated due to the planet’s size or was absorbed beneath the surface to be held in vast underground reservoirs. A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests the latter after an analysis of seismic data showed that the speed of waves traveling through the planet’s crust indicates similar reservoirs to ones that can be found below the Earth’s surface, according to Reuters. Scientists have also debated whether such water would be frozen or whether Mars’s active crust would keep the water warm enough to be liquid. The study suggests the latter. Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft confirmed that the measure had received the necessary signatures to appear on the Nov. 5 ballot. The announcement sets up the Show Me State as one of the places where voters will decide on an abortion ballot measure, two years after the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization returned lawmaking on abortion to the states. The ballot measure would overturn the state’s current abortion law, which bans the act except in medical emergencies, and instead restrict the state government from making laws on the matter but allow it to pass a law banning abortion after fetal viability with exceptions for the mother’s life or physical or mental health. Iraq Parliament Moves to Legalize Marriage for Nine-Year-Old Girls

Breitbart Organizers have planned protests in at least seven provinces on Thursday throughout Iraq in response to the introduction of amendments to a core family legal framework that could legalize child marriages, deprive widows of their inheritance, and facilitate sex slavery. The Iraqi Parliament began to debate amendments to the Personal Status Law on Sunday that would, critics say, effectively dissolve the country’s universal standards to protect women and girls on matters such as consent to marriage, alimony, and custody of children by allowing men to opt out, choosing traditional Shiite or Sunni Islamic mandates, instead. While child marriages, sex slavery, and other abuses are rampant in modern-day Iraq, they are not technically legal. Iraqi law currently requires both men and women to be 18 years old to enter marriage, allows a woman to inherit her husband’s assets in the event of his death, and allows for unconditional inter-religious marriage. The amendments to the secularized Personal Status Law, passed in 1959, would allow the relevant men in a marriage or proposed marriage to choose whether to apply Sunni sharia rules or Shiite sharia. It does not discuss other religions, such as Christianity, Zoroastrianism, or the Yazidi faith, which once boasted vibrant constituencies in Iraq but…

The publicly funded, Catholic-directed institution would be the first of its kind in the nation. The Oklahoma Supreme Court earlier this summer ruled against its establishment, ordering the Statewide Virtual Charter School Board to rescind the school’s contract. Senate Fails to Advance Major Tax Bill That Would Expand Child Tax Credit

CBS News A major tax package that would bolster the popular Child Tax Credit and cut taxes for businesses failed to advance in the Senate on Thursday in the face of widespread Republican opposition, despite clearing the House by wide bipartisan margins earlier this year.  Known as the Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024, the legislation would expand the Child Tax Credit to provide relief to lower-income families. Though it’s more modest than a pandemic-era enhancement of the credit, which greatly reduced child poverty and ended in 2021, it could still lift roughly half a million children out of poverty, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The bill also included some revived tax cuts for businesses, like research and development deductions.  The legislation fell short in a vote of 48 in favor to 44 opposed, with 60 votes needed to advance the measure. Three Republicans — Sens. Josh Hawley of Missouri, Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma and Rick Scott of Florida — joined with Democrats in favor of moving forward with the bill. Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Bernie Sanders of Vermont, independents who caucus with Democrats, were also opposed. READ THE FULL STORY     …
