Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Seth Moulton said Tuesday that his party will continue to lose elections if they attempt to cancel people for publicly stating that biological men should not compete in women’s sports.
Moulton, a father of two daughters, defended his public opposition to biological men identifying as transgender competing in women’s sports and criticized his party for spending too much time trying not to offend people. The congressman told “Morning Joe” host Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski that the party is “talking down” to the majority of Americans by scrutinizing those who are against men competing in women’s sports, which will ultimately lead them to lose elections.
“When people like this in our party try to cancel me or whomever else, they’re also talking down, they’re canceling the views of a vast majority of Americans,” Moulton said. “And so, how on Earth are we gonna win elections if that’s our approach, that we just want to preach down to people and tell them that they’re morally wrong if they don’t meet some strict ideological purity test?”
Scarborough and Brzezinski criticized the Democratic Party for refusing to allow any conversations or discourse to be had about several controversial issues. Moulton said his party would benefit by remembering and exercising the “foundational value” of freedom of speech, which allows for civil discourse about tough issues.
“Right, and you can’t even have a conversation about it, you can’t have a conversation about why Democrats lost, and so it’s like they’ve learned absolutely nothing. They’re canceling the United States congressman, or they’re trying to,” Scarborough said.
“I’m not worried about it, I’ll be just fine,” Moulton said. “The founders had this crazy concept called freedom of speech, and we Democrats would do well to remember that foundational American value, because if we can’t talk about these tough issues, we’re never gonna win on them.”
Brzezinski argued the American public should be allowed to say they support transgender people while opposing biological men competing against their daughters, leading Scarborough to say that Congress could compromise on the issue. Moulton further argued that the Democrats will “keep losing elections” if they cannot even engage in this civil discourse.
A majority of U.S. adults, 69 percent, believe adult biological men should either never or rarely compete in women’s sports, while 66 percent are opposed to biological boys competing against girls, according to a NORC survey conducted at the University of Chicago.
Female athletes have suffered injuries by male teammates in several instances, including then-17-year-old Payton McNabb, who suffered a severe head and neck injury after a man identifying as a transgender woman spiked a ball on her head in September 2022. A six-foot-tall male player with facial hair injured several female players during a basketball game between the Collegiate Charter School of Lowell and KIPP Academy in Lynn, Massachusetts, in March.
