According to census data released in October, more than 22,500 Californians migrated to Tennessee between 2021 and 2022.
Overall, 220,000 people moved to Tennessee in that time period, as the state’s population continues to grow at a much higher rate than the national average.
Making the move from California to Tennessee is so popular that a site called exitcalifornia.org has an entire webpage dedicated to offering useful tips for those seeking to flee the west coast.
“You do not need any moving permits, but check on local parking restrictions before moving to Tennessee,” one tip says.
“The climate is humid all year round,” says another. “Be sure to cover any moving boxes or other items you might have to leave outside for a few hours. If you are planning on using storage after moving to Tennessee, make sure the space is dry and free of mold.”
The site also notes that Tennessee is one of the most affordable states, saying that the cost of living in the Volunteer State is “18.94 percent lower than the US average, and it ranks among the ten most affordable states to live in the entire country.”
California consistently ranks in the top five most expensive states to live.
WBIR interviewed one of the former Californians who has recently moved east.
Jerry Wernli, a former police officer in Roseville, California, explained that he fled the state for political reasons.
He moved with his wife to Maryville.
“I don’t miss the politics, I don’t miss the beach, I don’t miss the homelessness, I don’t miss the cost of living out there,” said Wernli. “[Gas] is $1.50 to two dollars less expensive here. The utilities are less expensive by a long ways.”
He also cited freedom as a reason for his move.
“The freedom to have your own beliefs,” he said. “The freedom to live your life the way that you see fit, and it’s very hands off.”

Most of these foreign transplants helped to destroy Los Angeles, San Francisco and Kalifornia with their pro-criminal Socialist policies.
The do the same wherever they go.
I lived and worked there for near 40 years and very glad I never capitulated to their BS.
I have noticed the change in Tennessee moving toward criminal controlled California. Especially with the drivers.
Native Tennesseans do not give up your State to the West Coast Socialists.
They will play nice to your face while sticking the knife in your back.
Great, with Bill Lee’s blessings we’ll soon rival Florida in population and cost of living…
God help us!
