Ohio U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released a statement Friday evening calling on President Joe Biden to “end” his 2024 reelection campaign.
In the statement released shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Brown did not give a specific reason behind his call for Biden to end his reelection bid, instead pointing to conversations he’s had with constituents.
I agree with the many Ohioans who have reached out to me. At this critical time, our full attention must return to these important issues. I think the President should end his campaign. pic.twitter.com/dwKMZJzMfu

“Over the last few weeks, I’ve heard from Ohioans on important issues, such as how to continue to grow jobs in our state, give law enforcement the resources to crack down on fentanyl, protect Social Security and Medicare from cuts, and prevent the ongoing efforts to impose a national abortion ban. These are the issues Ohioans care about and it is my job to keep fighting for them,” Brown said.
“I agree with the many Ohioans who have reached out to me. At this critical time, our full attention must return to these important issues. I think the President should end his campaign,” Brown added.
Brown, who is up for reelection himself this year, joins the more than 30 congressional Democrats who have called on Biden to shelve his reelection bid since his disastrous performance during last month’s presidential debate against Republican presidential nominee former President Donald Trump.
Shortly after Brown called on Biden to end his reelection bid, the Ohio Republican Party demanded that the incumbent U.S. senator answer whether or not he believes Biden should step down from the presidency.
Make no mistake, @SherrodBrown has known for a long time that Joe Biden is unfit to serve, but Brown lied and hid the ball on his cognitive decline.
Sherrod must answer if @JoeBiden should step down as President, or if Democrats will continue to put our country at risk.

“Make no mistake, [Sherrod Brown] has known for a long time that Joe Biden is unfit to serve, but Brown lied and hid the ball on his cognitive decline,” the Ohio GOP said. “Sherrod must answer if [Joe Biden] should step down as President, or if Democrats will continue to put our country at risk.”
Brown’s call for Biden to end his reelection campaign was predicted last week by Tom Zawistowski, president of the Ohio-based We the People Convention, who said the incumbent Democrat would “oust Biden as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee as a way to save his own reelection bid in the U.S. Senate.”
“What’s really going on here, folks, is not that these Democrats are concerned about winning the presidency. They’re concerned about saving their own hide. Sherrod Brown will not come out and say he supports Joe Biden,” Zawistowski said last week during an episode of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.
If you cared about our nation, instead of just protecting your job, you would demand that Biden resign as President! Biden is a national security threat! You, Sherrod Brown, have known it since 2020 and you said nothing! Worse you lied to your voters to cover for Biden! You are… https://t.co/i9SGnp5nWe

Zawistowski also agreed with the Ohio Republican Party following Brown’s official statement on Friday, saying in direct response to the senator’s announcement, “If you cared about our nation, instead of just protecting your job, you would demand that Biden resign as President!”
“Biden is a national security threat! You, Sherrod Brown, have known it since 2020 and you said nothing! Worse, you lied to your voters to cover for Biden! You are a disgrace to your office and to the people of Ohio! You should end YOUR campaign,” Zawistowski added.
