Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody on Wednesday secured an arrest warrant for attempted felony murder against Ryan Routh, according to a press release.
Routh, who allegedly attempted to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump while he played golf at Mar-a-Lago, is accused of causing a traffic accident that “gravely injured a six-year-old girl” after fleeing Trump’s West Palm Beach golf course.
On September 15, after Secret Service members spotted Routh, he got into his car and traveled northbound on Interstate 95, the press release says.
While attempting to flee, Routh got into a car accident that caused “serious injuries” to the six-year-old.
“Under the leadership of Governor DeSantis, we vowed to bring transparency and accountability to the investigation into the second assassination attempt of President Trump. Despite the federal government frustrating our efforts, which we continue to challenge in court, we found that Mr. Routh’s actions caused catastrophic injuries to a six-year-old girl,” Moody said.
“My heart breaks for the child and her family, and while we continue to seek justice for President Trump, we will fight just as hard to ensure Mr. Routh pays for the tragedy his criminal actions brought on this Florida family,” the attorney general added.
Also, Routh is facing charges of attempted assassination, “assaulting a federal officer,” and “possessing a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence,” according to The Hill.
After Trump’s second assassination attempt, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said he wants to see life in prison for Routh.
The State of Florida has attempted to investigate Trump’s assassination attempt, but it claims the federal government is blocking the investigation.
Florida filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice in October.
“Every day that Florida is prevented from investigating, the State’s case becomes harder to prove at trial,” the lawsuit says. “By contrast, the federal government suffers no injury from Florida investigating state law crimes, as the State has no intention of interfering with or obstructing the federal investigation.”
DeSantis said the federal government has prevented “Florida’s investigation of the Trump assassination attempt at every turn.”
“The tide will turn on January 20th and we fully expect that the federal roadblocks will be removed. The would-be assassin needs to face the full force of justice, and the people deserve the truth about the defendant’s history, motivations and plan,” he added.
