Manhattan prosecutors charged Luigi Mangione with murder on Monday night in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, along with other charges, according to court documents reported by the Associated Press.
Mangione, who was identified as a person of interest in the investigation earlier Monday, has been formally charged with one count of murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, per CNN.
The charges come after he made his first court appearance during a preliminary arraignment in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. He has not entered a formal plea, and has been ordered to be held without bail.
Mangione, who is 26-years-old, comes from a prominent Maryland family, according to the Associated Press, and one of his cousins is a Republican Maryland state legislator named Nino Mangione. He was also reportedly valedictorian of his 2016 high school graduating class at the Gilman School in Baltimore and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE), Computer and Information Science.
The alleged shooter’s family released a statement on the arrest on Monday night.
“Our family is shocked and devastated by Luigi’s arrest,” the family said in a written statement. “We offer prayers to the family of Brian Thompson and we ask people to pray for all involved.”
