Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s team on Tuesday confirmed it would oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s efforts to dismiss the charges against him in his hush money case, but indicated that his sentencing might face delay until after his presidency.
Judge Juan Merchan on Tuesday cancelled Trump’s Nov. 26 sentencing and is still weighing whether to toss the conviction entirely. Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to a 2016 payment his then-personal attorney, Michael Cohen, made to Stormy Daniels.
Bragg’s team confirmed it would not oppose an indefinite delay of the sentencing, but still opposed the bid for dismissal, Politico reported.
The Trump team, meanwhile, declared victory on Tuesday after Merchan cancelled the sentencing.
“This is a total and definitive victory for President Trump and the American People who elected him in a landslide,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director. “The Manhattan DA has conceded that this Witch Hunt cannot continue. The lawless case is now stayed, and President Trump’s legal team is moving to get it dismissed once and for all.”
