Murfreesboro Police Won’t Charge Man Who Killed Home Intruders

Police in Murfreesboro say they will not charge a homeowner shot and killed an intruder after that intruder, along with a second suspect broke into the home, used a taser on the homeowner’s dog and held a gun to one of the homeowner’s children.

“MPD Criminal Investigations Division detectives are investigating a home invasion where the homeowner shoots two intruders, killing one and injuring the other on Friday night. 52-year-old Kevin Ford was pronounced dead at the scene,” according to the police department’s Twitter account.

MPD later announced that the homeowner would not be charged.

“The preliminary investigation revealed the two masked intruders, wearing gloves, broke into the home through the front door, tased the family’s dog, and held the homeowner’s teenage son at gunpoint,” said an MPD press release. “The homeowner retrieved his gun and shot the two intruders several times. Three people were in the home at the time of the home invasion. The homeowner is not facing any charges.”

The other home intruder was badly wounded by the armed homeowner.

“The other intruder, 42-year-old Clifford Wright, was located at the Salvation Army on Main Street suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Wright was taken to the hospital, treated, released, and then taken to jail. He is charged with aggravated burglary, attempted aggravated robbery, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent felony,” MPD said.

The National Firearms Survey, the largest poll of gun owners in history that was published in 2021, says that firearms are used in self-defense almost 1.7 million times per year in the United States.

The survey says:

Consistent with other recent survey research, the survey finds an overall rate of adult firearm ownership of 31.9%, suggesting that in excess of 81.4 million Americans aged 18 and over own firearms. The survey further finds that approximately a third of gun owners (31.1%) have used a firearm to defend themselves or their property, often on more than one occasion, and it estimates that guns are used defensively by firearms owners in approximately 1.67 million incidents per year. Handguns are the most common firearm employed for self-defense (used in 65.9% of defensive incidents), and in most defensive incidents (81.9%) no shot was fired. Approximately a quarter (25.2%) of defensive incidents occurred within the gun owner’s home, and approximately half (53.9%) occurred outside their home, but on their property. About one out of ten (9.1%) defensive gun uses occurred in public, and about one out of thirty (3.2%) occurred at work.

According to Neighborhood Scout, Murfreesboro, Tennessee’s sixth-largest city, is a relatively safe one compared to others nationwide. It has 14 percent less crime than the average American city. The crime rate there is on par with Tennessee’s average.
