Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti joined a coalition of 23 state attorneys general in sending a letter to Special Counsel Jack Smith, New York Attorney General Letitia James, and Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis demanding that their offices’ prosecutions of President Donald Trump end “immediately.”
“As the chief legal officers in our States, we write to strongly encourage you to discontinue your political prosecutions of President Trump,” the coalition, led by Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird, wrote in the letter.
In addition to pointing out the “meritless claims” of each case against the president-elect, the coalition warned that the continued prosecution of Trump while he is the sitting U.S. president “risks real harm to our federal system.”
“President of the United States is the most important job in the world. The President leads the free world. And America just gave President Trump a mandate to lead the United States to a brighter future. Prosecutions aimed at “self-promotion” are at no time appropriate,” the attorneys general said.
“For the sake of our nation, your prosecutions must now end,” the coalition concluded.
After the coalition’s letter was sent, Special Counsel Smith announced he would be resigning ahead of Trump’s inauguration and close his office’s two prosecutions against the president-elect relating to election interference and classified documents.
Despite Smith’s winding down of his probes against Trump, reports indicate that New York Attorney General James and Fulton County District Attorney Willis plan to continue their prosecutions and other legal challenges against the president-elect despite his forthcoming inauguration as the United States’ 47th president.
In addition to Tennessee’s Skrmetti, the attorneys general of Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and West Virginia joined the letter urging the end of all prosecutions against Trump.
