President-elect Donald Trump reacted on Friday to his sentencing in the New York City hush money trial.
Judge Juan Merchan sentenced him to no jail time, probation, or a fine; however, with this sentencing, Trump will be the first American president to be a convicted felon while in office.
In May 2024, a New York jury found Trump guilty of falsifying business records to hide his reimbursement payment to his former lawyer Michael Cohen who paid pornstar Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. Daniels was paid to keep quiet about an alleged affair.
“Sir, I wish you Godspeed as you pursue your second term in office,” Merchan said, The Washington Post reported.
After the sentencing, Trump reacted to the decision on Truth Social.
“The Radical Democrats have lost another pathetic, unAmerican Witch Hunt. After spending tens of millions of dollars, wasting over 6 years of obsessive work that should have been spent on protecting New Yorkers from violent, rampant crime that is destroying the City and State, coordinating with the Biden/Harris Department of Injustice in lawless Weaponization, and bringing completely baseless, illegal, and fake charges against your 45th and 47th President,” he said.
Trump said there was “never a case” and this “scam” should be dismissed.
“The real Jury, the American People, have spoken, by Re-Electing me with an overwhelming MANDATE in one of the most consequential Elections in History,” the president-elect added. “As the American People have seen, this ‘case’ had no crime, no damages, no proof, no facts, no Law, only a highly conflicted Judge, a star witness who is a disbarred, disgraced, serial perjurer, and criminal Election Interference.”
Trump called Friday’s events “a despicable charade.”.
“Now that it is over, we will appeal this Hoax, which has no merit, and restore the trust of Americans in our once great System of Justice. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!” he added.
Trump will be inaugurated on January 20th. The Supreme Court is currently deciding if the DOJ can release Special Prosecutor Jack Smith’s January 6 report.
