UPDATE: The New York City Police Department has released additional information, including an image of the alleged shooter captured by security cameras nearby.

Authorities held a short media briefing and revealed additional details, including that the perpetrator appeared to lay in wait for his intended target. After the UnitedHealthcare executive passed by, police say the shooter opened fire, striking the CEO several times in the back, and then fled on foot and later obtained an e-bike to continue his getaway.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot Wednesday morning in front of a Manhattan hotel, according to several news reports.

The shooting occurred at about 7 a.m. near a hotel on 54th Street between 6th and 7th Avenues.

Thompson was rushed to Mt Sinai Hospital in critical condition where he was pronounced dead, according to the New York Post.

Police are reported looking for a masked gunman.

Thompson was in Manhattan for a conference where a masked man was waiting for him outside of the hotel. After the gunman shot him, he fled on a bike, according to the Post.

Thompson became the CEO of UnitedHealthcare in 2021 and joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004.
