Man Wrongly Convicted of Murder by Kamala Harris Faults Charlemagne for Failure to Press VP on Criminal Justice Record

Jamal Trulove, who was wrongly convicted of murder under the oversight of Vice President Kamala Harris when she was the San Francisco District Attorney, slammed Charlamagne tha God for his failure to press the Democratic presidential nominee on her criminal justice record during their Tuesday town hall.

Trulove wrote in a post to the social media platform X that Harris lied during her town hall with Charlamagne tha God, and held his own case as evidence of the Democrat’s dishonesty.

“Kamala Harris just said it’s not true that she locked up Black Men,” wrote Trulove, adding that the radio host, “didn’t press her on it or bring up my story when he had the opportunity.”

The entertainer wrote that Charlamagne tha God, “should be ashamed for playing politics and not asking the question that Black Men in America [want] to know, and press her. This is why we’re not voting for that lady.”

Trulove was wrongly convicted of murder in San Francisco while Harris was the city’s district attorney. After a new trial was ordered, Trulove was freed, and he ultimately received a $13.1 million settlement from the city for the wrongful conviction.

While Trulove endorsed the Biden-Harris presidential ticket in 2020 during an appearance on “The Breakfast Club” with Charlamagne tha God, earlier this year Trulove released a video explaining the decision was motivated by a desire to maintain his entertainment career. In the same video, Trulove condemned Harris for his wrongful conviction, slammed President Joe Biden for his historic stance on crime, and endorsed former President Donald Trump.

Prior to Harris’ meeting with Charlamagne tha God for their audio town hall, Trulove urged the radio personality to question Harris about his wrongful conviction.

Neither Charlamagne tha God nor Harris referenced Trulove during their hour-long exchange on Tuesday, but after declaring Harris is running a campaign both against Trump and the concept of “misinformation,” the radio personality did ask the vice president about her record as a prosecutor.

“One of the biggest pieces of misinformation, one of the biggest allegations against you, is that you targeted and locked up thousands of black men for weed,” said Charlamagne tha God, adding that some think Harris was motivated to seek the convictions, “out of pure hate for black men.”

Harris stated the claims are “simply not true” and called herself “the most progressive prosecutor in California on marijuana cases.”

Former Representative Tulsi Gabbard first raised questions about Harris’ record on criminal justiceduring a Democratic primary debate in 2019, when Gabbard stated, “[Harris] put over fifteen hundred people in jail for marijuana violations and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”

While 1,560 people were sent to prison in California while Harris was the state’s top prosecutor, CBS News noted in 2019, many of the cases were handled by local district attorneys and may have featured little input from Harris.

However, when Harris was the San Francisco District Attorney and oversaw such cases directly, Mercury News reported her office secured more than 1,900 marijuana convictions.

The fate of what happened to those she successfully convicted remains less clear, as the outlet reported, “only a few dozen people were sent to state prison for marijuana offenses under Harris’ tenure.”

Some former prosecutors and defense attorneys additionally told the outlet they recalled Harris’ office generally avoided prison sentences for marijuana. However, one prosecutor said Harris was harsher than other prosecutors on cases related to selling marijuana.

Ultimately, information reported by Mercury News suggests many of those convicted for marijuana offenses under Harris could have received sentences of less than one year, which would be completed in a county jail rather than state prison, as such records are not preserved.

Trulove is not the only defendant prosecuted under Harris who later received a high-profile financial settlement, as San Francisco similarly paid $1 million after Harris prosecuted a woman who was shot by police during a mental health crisis. The officers were not injured.
