Live from Music Row Monday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed Tennessean and infamous MAGA Rapper Bryson Gray to the newsmakers line to talk about his ‘Let’s Go Brandon’ song reaching the top of the music charts Sunday night after being banned on YouTube for medical misinformation.

Leahy: Let’s go, Brandon! Our good friend, rapper Bryson Gray from Murfreesboro, that’s your song. Congratulations on that by the way.

Gray: Thank you so much, man. Thank you so much for playing it also.

Leahy: So now YouTube has taken it off the air. Why is that?

Gray: They claimed the song consists of medical misinformation. They decided to ban it and give me a strike, and I can’t post on YouTube for, like, two weeks. (Chuckles)

Leahy: Okay. I didn’t hear any medical information in that song.

Yes, Every Kid

Gray: Well, that’s because there isn’t any. (Leahy laughs)

Carmichael: That’s the problem. That’s the problem. The fact that you didn’t give any medical information is evidence of bad medical information.

Gray: (Laughs) Exactly. But they banned it anyway.

Leahy: Now you are one of three rappers that have a Let’s Go Brandon song. It’s you and it’s another guy, Lozo Alexander. And then I guess there’s one other. You’re number six on iTunes right now, right?

Gray: I think we’re number one on iTunes charts overall. In the rap genre and we’re number one in two other countries. I think the UK and Australia.

Leahy: It’s a good tune.

Carmichael: Now, how does it work? You create this wonderful musical lyric in the song, and then it gets on iTunes. How does the financial arrangement work? Do you get paid something? Some small amount every time it’s played?

Gray: If you have to buy it for one dollar, the artist gets .75 cents then it gets to split a certain way amongst the artists of the song. If you stream it, we get less than a cent per stream.

Leahy: But you’re making some bank here, aren’t you?

Gray: God willing, yes sir.

Leahy: Well deserved. It’s a great tune. How on earth do the YouTube people shut you down under these false claims?

Gray: I guess they can do whatever they want when the government doesn’t do anything about it. I don’t know when they started censoring the arts, but they make music about anything else they want cursing, sex, drugs, and gang banging. But I can’t ask a question or give my view.

Leahy: So you put a grab up of the message that YouTube sent you that specified your video violated medical misinformation policy.

Gray: Right.

Leahy: And then on Thursday, the tech support folks responded and said they would look into the ban. Here’s what they told you.

‘Jumping in. We’re passing this along to the right team for a re-review.’ Have they updated you on that, or are you still out for a couple of weeks?

Gray: The funny thing about that is they sent me that after they banned the lyric video.

Leahy: Really?

Gray: Ten minutes after they sent me that they banned the music video. So I guess they did update me. (Laughter)

Leahy: This is actually a boon for your already great career, isn’t it, Bryson?

Gray: Yes, sir. That’s why I thanked YouTube. I said, ‘thank you YouTube.’

Leahy: So your website where people can go and buy all your gear. Brysoncreates.com. Now you’ve got these hats, you showed me one of these hats. It’s called a bucket hat. That’s what it is, Crom.

Gray: Yes sir.

Leahy: Next time you come into the studio, you’re going to have to bring a couple of bucket hats. I will buy one and then get a picture of you and me wearing a bucket hat. That’s something. (Chuckles)

Gray: Yes, sir. We got to do it. That’s how you do it right there. The bucket hat.

Leahy: Are you seeing the sales of your hoodies and hats go up at Brysoncreates.com now that you are number one on iTunes with Let’s Go Brandon?

Gray: I haven’t checked and I suck at promoting. I don’t even think I’ve posted about my merch site since the song has been going viral. So I need to do something like Tweet it today or something. (Laughs)

Leahy: Is this the biggest hit you’ve ever had?

Gray: Yes. I’ve had a number three overall, but I’ve never had a number one.

Leahy: Number one! Our good friend, Bryson Gray. Thanks so much for making the time. I know you have a lot of media commitments, but you made time for us.

Carmichael: On the site, there are a lot of very cool hats on here.

Gray: (Laughs) Thank you so much.

Leahy: Brysoncreates.com. Bryson Gray with the number one iTunes hit, Let’s Go Brandon! Congratulations, Bryson. Come back in with us.

Gray: Yes, sir. Let’s Go Brandon! (Laughter)

Leahy: That’s just too much fun. Crom, I’ll tell ya.

Carmichael: I tell you, that’s the gift that keeps on giving.

Leahy: You bet.
