The 90-day investigation ordered by the Biden Administration into the origins of the Chinese Wuhan coronavirus has come to a conclusion, but remains classified to the general public for the immediate future, according to CNN.
In the month of May, Biden ordered the intelligence community to conduct their own investigation into where the virus originated from, after shutting down previous ongoing investigations that had been initiated by the Trump Administration, and ordered his new investigations to report back in 90 days with their findings. The 90-day deadline was Tuesday.
After briefing Biden on the findings of the report on Tuesday, the agencies are set to brief lawmakers on their findings as well, before working on a version that can ultimately be declassified and released to the general public.
When asked about a possible release later this week, Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that she believed it would take “a couple of days, if not longer, to put together an unclassified version to present publicly…so I don’t have an exact date for you, but I will expect it will be several days, a couple to several days after tomorrow.”
The primary debate is over whether the virus originated naturally, spreading to humans from wild animals such as bats, or if it was manufactured in a laboratory and was accidentally released into the broader population, referred to as “the lab-leak theory.” It has been universally agreed upon that the virus came from the city of Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei Province in China; the question remains as to whether the virus originated in one of Wuhan’s so-called “wet markets,” where raw food materials are exposed to the air and could possibly facilitate the spread of a virus, or if the virus was created in the nearby Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), and leaked by accident.
The lab-leak theory has gained significant traction in recent months, with one piece of strong evidence being the fact that workers at the WIV fell ill with coronavirus symptoms as early as November 2019, well before the first documented cases of the virus outside the lab in January 2020. There has also been increased scrutiny into the ties between the WIV and several United States government agencies that provided funding to the lab in the years prior to the pandemic. With increased scrutiny against the Chinese government, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has repeatedly and falsely claimed that the virus instead originated in the United States.
