Live from Music Row Monday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed all-star panelist, Dr. Carol Swain, in-studio to discuss her new book Black Eye for America: How Critical Race Theory is Burning Down the House, and why parents should speak up for their children.
Leahy: We are joined in-studio by our all-star panelist, Carol Swain. Good morning, Carol.
Swain: Good morning. It’s great to be back.
Leahy: You look so colorful this morning in a very colorful outfit. We took a picture of you just now. We’re gonna put it up on your Twitter feed.
Swain: I hope so.
Leahy: Okay. Good, good, good, good. Well, Carol, oh, my goodness. So many things have happened. Before we get into the gory details of the past 72 hours, which have not been good for the United States of America, there is a book that you wrote and co-authored, along with Christopher Schorr, which we’ve been advertising here.
It’s called Black Eye for America. It’s now rated number one bestseller in inclusive education methods and overall at Amazon.com. It’s in the top 500. It’s number 445 right now overall.
Swain: It should be number one in democracy, too.
Leahy: It’s also number one in democracy.
Swain: Which is a big, wide category. And it’s been holding that spot. We’re ahead of Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States. And George Packer has a book that is up there, too.
Leahy: For this kind of book that’s in essence, sort of a self-published book from the Be the People Books, this is a remarkable sales record, Carol. It was published on August first.
Here we are on August 16th. And sometimes a lot of these self-published books will kind of go up in one category and then down.
Swain: First, you say self-published as if there’s something wrong with being self-published.
Leahy: Well, I self-published a lot of books.
Swain: But let me tell you about why I chose to do that. I had so many parents, teachers, administrators that contacted me about Critical Race Theory, and it was, like, overwhelming. And so initially I was going to write a primer. The title of the book was going to be Critical Race Theory …
Leahy: The title you went with is much better. Black Eye for America: How Critical Race Theory Is Burning Down the House. That’s a great title.
Swain: Before it was going to be something for the perplexed. And what happened was I had Chris Schorr as a research assistant. He is a Georgetown Ph.D. in government, a Marine, and a Christian.
And he doesn’t have a job as a professor and his chances of getting a job, and I might also add, he’s a white male, are slim to none in this environment unless he’s hired by a conservative school.
Leahy: His options would be Hillsdale College, Grove City College, and now the new one. I’m going to put him in touch with the folks at Thales College, which is opening next fall.
Swain: Really?
Leahy: In Raleigh, North Carolina. They are going to be great. So we’ll have Chris talk to the folks at Thales College.
Swain: Initially we had hoped to get the book out by the end of May. But as it developed, it took that long with a self-published book. If we had gone with a traditional publisher, it would have been eight to nine months from now.
Leahy: They take forever.
Swain: And they take 85 percent of the profits.
Leahy: So you’re going to get all the profits here?
Swain: It takes a lot to take a book through the process.
Leahy: It does.
Swain: I had experts helping me every step of the way. So Be the People Publishing is for Carol Swain books that need to get out quickly for the American people. And you might note that it’s shorter than my usual books.
It’s 176 pages, but it has a glossary, index, appendices, and everything that people need to really understand Critical Race Theory.
Leahy: Black Eye for America: How Critical Race Theory Is Burning Down the House. What will people learn when they read this book, Carol?
Swain: First of all, a number of people grappling with what is Critical Race Theory. They’re trying to understand the concept. The book explains what it is and where it came from.
And so we talk about the Marxist roots and how it’s related to postmodernism and just some of the critical legal theory, and all of these things that were behind the critical theory.
And it stayed in the universities for many years. And so what we’re seeing now is the results of Critical Race Theory that started in the 1970s at Harvard Law School, your alma mater.
Leahy: I didn’t go to the law school. They wouldn’t let me in.
Swain: Harvard University. And it affected just about every institution and every academic field, including now math and science. We talk about how Critical Race Theory is un-American. It runs counter to American traditions.
It runs counter to our U.S. Constitution and civil rights laws. But most importantly, we have two chapters on how to fight back against it. And so I think that people will be fully equipped to deal with school boards and institutions that are pushing Critical Race Theory.
And I think they’re on strong grounds. We talk about some of the court cases that have been successfully won. How white people are protected by the Civil Rights Act, state, federal, and local civil rights flaws.
Everyone has a right not to be in a hostile work environment or a hostile learning environment. And so people need to know their rights and they need to learn how to collect information.
Leahy: This is a great summary of your book, Black Eye for America: How Critical Race Theory Is Burning Down the House. The number one bestseller at Amazon in Democracy and number one bestseller in inclusive education methods. Also, overall, number 445. That’s pretty strong, Carol. Very strong.
Swain: It was 180. At one time, it was in the top 100.
Leahy: That’s very strong for a self-published book, says the man who has self-published books and never got much above number 10,000. (Laughter)
Swain: I was told by an entertainment attorney that people pay thousands of dollars for a publicist and don’t get the kind of results that we’re getting.
Leahy: That’s exactly true. Here’s the summary of it: In schools and workplaces across the United States, Americans are being indoctrinated with a divisive anti-American ideology, Critical Race Theory-based cultural Marxism.
Critical Race Theory bullies and demonizes whites while infantilizing and denying agency to blacks, creating a deep racial rift.
As Abraham Lincoln famously observed, ‘a House divided against itself cannot stand.’ Critical Race Theory aims to divide the American nation against itself and burn down the house.
Swain: And it’s doing that. Antifa and Black Lives Matter have literally burned down institutions.
Leahy: Let’s get back to what you can do about it part of your book. Black Eye for America: How Critical Race Theory is Burning Down the House. Available at Amazon.com. People want to know, what can they do?
Swain: What can they do? They can buy the book and read the two chapters that are devoted to strategy. They need to strategize and not feel like this is something that they have to fight alone. There are many Americans that are concerned about it, and it cuts across political parties.
Leahy: We have Critical Race Theory. They say they say, oh, it’s not Critical Race Theory.
Swain: No, it’s DEI. It’s culturally sensitive learning. No, it’s social justice. No, it’s educational equity. No, it’s Critical Race Theory, and they are lying when they tell you it’s not.
It is saying that one race has advantages over another race and that ratio ethnic minorities are oppressed or disadvantage because of the color of their skin. That’s Critical Race Theory.
When they tell you to shut up and listen to another group because your group has had unjust advantages, that’s Critical Race Theory. When they lower standards to bring about equity, which doesn’t mean equal opportunity, that’s Critical Race Theory.
Leahy: I have two words to say to that, Carol, you ready?
Swain: What?
Leahy: Amen, sister! Amen, sister! Bring it! Bring it!
Swain: And I’m trying to white people saying that they can’t talk about these issues. You can say it, but I can’t. Of course, you can say it, because you can stand on principles. a Constitution, our civil rights laws.
All of those are based on sane principles and Judeo-Christian values. They can speak and they need to speak. Speak for your children, if not for yourself.
Leahy: No one says it better than Carol Swain. When we come back, we’ll talk a little bit about that. I’m guessing parents across the country want you to talk to them and probably talk to some school boards. I’m guessing you’re getting a lot of invitations these days.
