Blackburn Introduces Across-the-Board Spending Cuts to Minibus Appropriations Package

U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) said she introduced across-the-board spending cuts on Monday as amendments to S. Amdt. 948 to H.R. 3055 for Fiscal Year 2020.

H.R. 3055 is a 2020 minibus appropriations package.

Blackburn said her amendments seek to cut 1%, 2% or 5% of all spending accounts under the bill, including the Departments of Commerce, Justice, Agriculture, Interior, Transportation, and Housing and Urban Development.

“The government never gets enough of the taxpayer’s money. If you send it, they will spend it,” Blackburn said. “At the rate Washington is spending, we’ll be leaving our children and grandchildren with an enormous amount of debt, which is immoral. By working with federal agencies to cut back, we can drive down our spending, our annual deficit, and our national debt.”

Blackburn tweeted, “Washington has a spending problem — our national debt is over $22 trillion. So I’m giving my colleagues a choice: you can vote to save 1%, 2%, or 5% percent of the American taxpayers’ hard-earned money.”

The Senate Monday rejected an amendment by U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to place an across-the-board spending cut in a domestic funding package, The Hill reported. The amendment would have cut spending by 2 percent.

Monday was not Blackburn’s first effort to cut spending or to tout the benefits of tax cuts. She said she has introduced 1 percent, 2 percent and 5 percent across-the-board spending cuts, either as amendments or as stand-alone bills, since she was first elected to the House of Representatives in the 108th Congress.

Blackburn in early October toured the Union Row redevelopment in Memphis, which was made possible by Opportunity Zone incentives through President Donald Trump’s Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, The Tennessee Star reported.

In September 2018, Blackburn, then a representative, received a Taxpayer’s Friend award and an A rating of 87 percent from the National Taxpayers Union (NTU), The Star said.

Be sure to cut Congressional perks “across the board” as well. She’s still singing the same tune she sang in state government.
