California to Ban Any New Gas-Powered Cars by 2035

by Eric Lendrum

In perhaps the most radical push yet for so-called “green energy” alternatives, the state of California has announced plans to ban the sale of any new gas-fueled cars by the year 2035.

On Thursday, as reported by the New York Post, the California Air Resources Board is set to approve a resolution called the Advanced Clean Cars II act, which will initiate a phase-out of gas-powered vehicles across the state of California over the next 12 years.

The new measure demands that 35 percent of vehicles manufactured and sold in California in 2026 have zero emissions; currently, the requirement is that 12 percent of vehicles must meet this quota. The quotas would subsequently increase to 51 percent in 2028 and 68 percent in 2030, before reaching 100 percent in 2035. Vehicles operating on gasoline that were manufactured before 2035 will be allowed to remain operational.

The unprecedented restrictions are the result of an executive order signed by Governor Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) in 2020, declaring that the state be put on “a path to carbon neutrality by 2045.”

“The proposal will substantially reduce air pollutants that threaten public health and cause climate change,” CARB said in a statement ahead of the vote. Board member Daniel Sperling said that he was “99.9 percent” confident that the measure would pass, allowing it to be submitted to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for final federal approval.

“This is monumental,” Sperling declared. “This is the most important thing that CARB has done in the last 30 years. It’s important not just for California, but it’s important for the country and the world. The car companies see what’s happening in China, in Europe. Many of them have already made announcements about how they’re converting totally to electric vehicles.”

California’s upcoming decision follows the signing of the Inflation Reduction Act by Joe Biden, a bill that, among other things, will invest $369 billion in “green energy” sources. The bill states that it intends to reduce emissions by 40 percent of 2005 levels by the year 2030.
