In a specific call on Wednesdayās Tennessee Star ReportĀ with Michael Patrick LeahyĀ ā broadcast onĀ Nashvilleās Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. ā Leahy was joined in studio by all-star panelist and Tennessee state Senator Kerry RobertsĀ (R-Springfield).
During the third hour, favorite listener and caller Bernadette gave her take on the State of the Union and admitted that she was embarrassed for the black Democrats’ behavior during the speech. She expressed her anger for the display of what she called their evil spirited faces disappointed by their lack of enthusiasm for all the things President Trump has done for them.
Leahy: We are joined now by our very patient caller and friend Bernadette who wants to weigh in on the State of the Union. Bernadette, thanks for waiting during the break. I appreciate it.
Bernadette: Good morning. Thank you. No problem. How y’all doing?
Leahy: We are doing great. I am waiting to see what you think about the State of the Union address because I think you have a pretty strong point of view. But, maybe I’m wrong.
Bernadette: Thank you. I appreciate that. Well, first of all, I want to say to your guest there, I’m one of your home girls. I remember Bob Knight. I loved him. I’m from Indiana too. I remember Bob Knight. I remember Kirk Hasten too. So I’m glad to here Indiana.
Roberts: No no. In Tennessee. He’s here in Tennessee.
Roberts: He’s the rep in Tennessee. And doing a great job.
Bernadette: I’m paying attention now. I didn’t know that. But as far as the State of the Union. Oh my goodness. I normally don’t like to listen to things like this because it bores me to tears. (Leahy giggles) But I really amazed and in awe of President Trump and his whole approach. He avoided impeachment. I was hoping that he would. He was very professional.
What embarrassed me the most was the black Democrats. Because I’m a black person. And to me, it came across as so embarrassing and disgusting because black people talk this crap about education, healthcare, the betterment of black folks, evil white people keeping us down all the time.
And here we have the president doing the very thing they’ve been pounding in our heads that you evil white folks haven’t been doing for us all these years. And they’re sitting there on their hands not clapping. With these sad sorry evil demonic looks on their faces. And this just angered me.
Leahy: Hold on. Tell us what those looks on their faces were again on their faces again.
Bernadette: They look like evil demon devil-worshiping faces. They were horrible. They were horrible. (Leahy laughs)
Leahy: You’re not wrong.
Bernadette: I couldn’t believe it because this is the State of the Union address. All of America’s eyes were looking at these people. They were on actual television screens. And I could not believe that they were so bias and obviously just mean spirited towards everything they’ve been claiming for all of my life that I’ve heard.
Evil white people don’t care about our education. Our jobs. Or whatever. Healthcare. And they sat there. I was so embarrassed and yet still I wasn’t surprised. It was an awesome speech.
Leahy: State Senator Kerry Roberts wants to say something about that.
Roberts: Bernadette. I appreciate the call. I have a question for you. Do you think that this speech now irrespective of the people in attendance, how they reacted? But within the black community across America, do you think that President Trump’s speech resonated?
Bernadette: You know I’m so glad you asked me that. (Laughs) Because I’ve been on the front lines here in Tennessee talking to black Americans in my Trump gear. I got Trump leggings that say MAGA. Trump 45. The Statue of Liberty. I got three Trump hats. A black one. A pink one. And a red one. And I go straight to Bordeaux with every chance I get in my Trump gear.
I’m talking to them in city trans, Save-A-Lot, gas stations, it doesn’t matter. At first, I was getting a lot of resistance. Calling me ignorant and a sell-out. All that stuff I’ve been called all my life. I’m 60, so I can take it. I just kept talking. I just kept preaching it. I just kept speaking truth to them and giving them comparisons from Obama to President Trump.
And then I would give them the history of the Democratic Party and how they’re the party of enslavement and how they’ve done it through these policies. We’ve gotten out of physical enslavement by leaving the plantations. But now we’re in the mental enslavement like Kayne West said. So anyway, now black people are really starting to listen.
It would not surprise me if he was in between the 30 and 50% range of black support. Because this speech got to them. The other networks had no choice but to cover it. Some black people heard it. Even if they only covered it for a little while because I wouldn’t doubt it with them. Some black people heard that and will be impressed with him. Sometimes we just need that boost. That nudge and that opportunity to get our ears to hear the truth from somebody.
Leahy: If you went up to Bordeaux this morning and you went in and just talked to anybody you saw there in the black community there and said, “Hey did you watch the President’s speech last night?” What did you think of it? What kind of response do you think you’d get.
Bernadette: With the older ones and the middle-age ones in their 50s and above, I would say they didn’t watch it. Not at all. I would say maybe 20-30% of them probably watched it simply because they will never ever give President Trump or Republicans any kind of shot whether he’s black or white or whatever.
They never will. That’s just how we are because it’s been programmed in our minds for the 60 plus years. But, I think the younger and the Millennials and all those, I think they’re better. I think they watched it. They have a more vested interest. The older black folk are set in their ways of being victimized. Victimhood. Victim mentality.
It’s not going to ever get right for us. Evil rich white people are always going to be evil rich and white and ow and keep everything and keep us out. Never mind our black millionaires, billionaires, and business owners even more than ever. Evil rich white folk needs to stop keeping us down. That’s all I got to say about it.
Leahy: That’s plenty to say, Bernadette.
Roberts: Good call. Great insight.
Leahy: Just let us know if the State of the Union speech did resonate and if you think it will help or not. I don’t think it’s going to hurt. It might help. Bernadette, thank you for calling. One of all great callers. Bernadette, thanks so much for listening and for calling. Don’t you love Bernadette? Thank you, Bernadette.
Roberts: I love the fact that she’s got a boldness to her. That she’s not afraid to express her beliefs. And this is exactly what is needed. Not just in the black community but everywhere. We need people to step up and say hey, let’s look at the facts.
Even if you don’t like the guy, let’s look at the facts. Let’s look at the fact that he’s putting action to words. He’s not just saying stuff. He’s doing stuff. I think whether you look at criminal justice reform. By the way, his ad in the Superbowl I thought was outstanding.
Leahy: Yeah. It was really good.
Roberts: It brought tears to my eyes literally. It was such a moving moment and well captured in that ad. I hope that she’s right. It’s going to be interesting to see what she says a week from now. Who watched. Who reacted. Who heard what.
I think if people watched that speech, that is a moving moment in your feelings about the president. And if you like him, you like him that much more. If you’ve been skeptical of him and you’re not sure where you fall on this, it’s going to nudge you into a positive place. And if you’re a critic and you’re open minded you’ve got some things to deal with. If you’re a critic and your close-minded, then you’re just going to put your fingers in your ears and not want to hear it.
Leahy: With my Democratic friends when I was talking in Iowa, I posed the question. We have such a polarized country now, how do we come together? I don’t see it with that generation where they are not open. They’re not.
Roberts: They’re not.
Leahy: They’re not open at all. With them there’s not much hope interestingly enough, the ones who might be open-minded actually are some of the younger voters I think.
Roberts: I think we’re seeing the high school kids. We’re going to have the same wave that we had in the 80s.
Leahy: We’ll see. We’ll see how that turns out.
