Conservative Republican songwriter Lee Thomas Miller, a candidate for the Seventh Congressional District GOP nomination, issued a statement of strong support Friday for President Trump’s announcement that the United States will recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and that the U.S. embassy will be relocated to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv:
As President Trump said in making the announcement, failing to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel has not led to lasting peace in the region. The Trump Administration action is consistent with current U.S. law and reaffirms what we already know: Jerusalem has been the capital of the Jewish people and Israel for thousands of years in every way but modern political designation. I support President Trump’s decision and applaud him for his courage and for keeping his often repeated campaign promise to do exactly what he has done. I am proud to stand with him and Israel, which remains our strongest ally in the region.
President Trump also noted in his historic announcement that The Jerusalem Embassy Act was passed in Congress by an overwhelming bipartisan majority. In the Senate, the bill passed on Oct. 24, 1995, by a 93-5 margin. Later that day, the House followed suit, passing it by a 374-37 margin. Just six months ago our U.S. Senate UNANIMOUSLY reaffirmed that Act by a resolution that passed 90-0. Only in Washington would something supported by virtually everyone, on both sides of the political aisle, still not have been done 22 years later! It underlines why we need new voices and new leadership in Congress that can actually get things done!
Miller is running to replace Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN-07), who in turn is now a candidate for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN).
He faces State Senator Mark Green (R-Clarksville) in what is expected to be a hotly contested August 2018 Republican primary.
The winner of that primary will be heavily favored to win the November 2018 general election in the very conservative 7th Congressional District.
