Live from Music Row Tuesday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed U.S. Rep. Mark Green (R-TN-07) to the newsmaker line to discuss new mask rules on the House floor, and how Republicans cannot be too confident in upcoming 2022 midterms.
Leahy: On the line now, Congressman Mark Green reporting from Washington, D.C., and serving in the House of Representatives, which has got this January 6 select committee that’s kind of a Kafkaesque investigation into Donald Trump again. Sounds pretty crazy there. Mark Green, how are you this morning?
Green: I’m doing great. It’s great to be with you guys, Michael Patrick, how are you?
Leahy: We are great. In studio with us as a mayor of Maury County, Andy Ogles, and Grant Henry.
Ogles: Hey, man.
Leahy: Now I have a question for you about this January 6 select committee. They seem to be wanting to ask everybody in the world or every Republican member of Congress to come in and testify about where they were on that day and what they did.
Representative Jim Jordan, your colleague from Ohio, has been requested to comply with their request that he voluntarily appeared before the panel providing investigators with information about his conversations with former President Donald Trump. He told them, I’ll just shorten this. He told them basically to go pound salt. Your thoughts? (Ogles laughs)
Green: Yeah, that sounds like Jim. You know, the whole thing is a charade because we all know that that was not an insurgency. And these guys have just blown up. And most of the people, I mean, there are tens of thousands of people there who are completely peaceful.
There were some criminals who broke the law and they damaged the building. They stole laptops. Those things happened. Those criminals should be prosecuted. But the vast majority of the people were there peacefully sharing their opinion and having their message heard. This is just a charade.
Leahy: There was a very bizarre scenario on January 6 where every Democrat in the House of Representatives went down to the well of the House and talked about how important it was that we get to the bottom of January 6.
And there was only one Republican who was there. Liz Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, and all of these progressive Democrats went up and shook his hand and said, what a wonderful job he’s doing. And what’s your thought on that bizarre episode of theater?
Green: I was just going to say, Liz who? (Leahy and Ogles chuckle) Look, I don’t understand her thought processes on this. The president was pretty clear when he made his message go peacefully. I don’t understand what the motive is or what the drivers are for her.
It’s pretty funny, though, that Democrats would embrace Dick Cheney because they hated his guts after the Gulf War. And, of course, they accused him and Halliburton of corruption and all of this stuff. The Democrats, because they have no policy that works, everything they touch just turns to a crisis.
And every single thing Joe Biden has done has been a failure. Not a single success story in this administration. So all they get is theater. All they get is drama, whether it’s another impeachment or whether it’s this insurrection thing.
Or now, Nancy wants us to wear N95s every time we’re on the floor of the House. I mean, everything they do is drama, because what they’re trying to create, you and I have had this conversation before for them, they want to create the concept that the systems in America are broken.
And so they use chaos to justify. And they’re building their argument. Capitalism creates inequality. It’s not fair. We need to go away from capitalism. All our systems are racist. And I disagreed with that until the FDA came out with their racist distribution of the monoclonal antibodies.
So now I guess we do have one system that’s totally racist. But no, I mean, look, they are trying to destroy America. The Marxists have taken over the Democrat Party, and we are in a battle for the very soul of our country.
And that soul is freedom and the individual responsibility that comes with it. And so you got me cranked up. (Leahy chuckles)
Leahy: Well, I always liked that. Now you said something interesting. Did you get a New Year’s greeting from Nancy Pelosi saying you must wear an N95 mask on the floor of the House?
Green: Yes, of course. On one side of the coin. So now you agree that these T-shirt masks are worthless like we’ve been saying for two years. But yes, now on the floor of the House, we have to wear an N95.
. . .
Leahy: There you go. So overall, what’s it look like? Will there be a red Republican wave in the 2022 midterms?
Green: I am one of those guys who I guess it was my mom just pounding in my head. The verses about pride, pride, growth before destruction, the Holy Spirit, before a fall. All those verses that she poured into my head about you being humble and all that. I’m concerned that we might be getting too overconfident.
Right now we’re in a good place right now. We have a superb team in charge, Tom Emmer, who runs the NRCC. The guy’s an ex-hockey player, and he did a great job last cycle. I think he’s going to do a fantastic job this cycle. But I want to make sure we don’t get overconfident.
That we do the work, we raise the money, and we get the messaging out there, because like I said earlier, this is a battle for the future of America. The Democrats have gone to the Marxists, and what we need to do is crush them in this election so that the moderates that are in the Democrat Party will try to save their party.
And then we can push these Marxists to the side. They came out in the 20s. This is not the first time these guys have tried phase three of the insurgency. But yes, we’re going to crush them. I hope we crush them, but we can’t be too confident.
Leahy: I love that. We’re going to take that audio clip. We need to crush them. (Laughter) We are going to keep that audio clip. And you will hear that throughout this program for the next several months or so. Congressman Mark Green, thanks for all the great work that you do. We really appreciate it. When you are out of the insanity of Washington, pleased to come in studio sometime.
Green: Yeah, we want to do that. I definitely want to do that. And I apologize for being negligent on that. We’ll get there.
Leahy: All right. Sounds great. Thanks for joining us.
