Costco One Step Closer to Building Store in Mt. Juliet

The Mt. Juliet Planning Department recently voted to move Costco Wholesale’s Development Plan package to the Board of Commissioners with a positive recommendation as the next step in bringing the store to the city.

Costco Wholesale warehouses carry brand-name merchandise at lower prices than are typically found at conventional wholesale or retail sources. Costco is open only to members and offers three types of membership: Executive, Business and Gold Star.

Costco’s proposed project for the City of Mt. Juliet includes approximately 160,057 square feet of retail, including 24 fuel stations, and 34,920 square feet in-house delivery space.

“I am very happy to confirm the rumors are true that Costco plans to construct a store in Mt. Juliet, and I’m excited to welcome Costco to our community,” Mt. Juliet Mayor James Maness said in a statement. “We know that there has been a strong interest from our citizens in this store. I am positive that Costco will expand our retail base, bringing new customers to Mt. Juliet who will shop elsewhere while they are in town.”

The project is expected to create 275 new jobs and will provide “incredible economic value to the City of Mt. Juliet when it comes to generating local sales tax revenue that serves as the lifeblood for city operations,” the city wrote in a Facebook post.

“This is not only a win for our local economy, but with one-half of the local portion of our sales tax going directly to our schools, this is a win for our school system as well,” Mayor Maness added.

Costco’s project is proposed at the southwest corner of the future intersection of Rutland Drive and Legacy Point Boulevard.

Outside of Mt. Juliet, Costco operates six stores in Tennessee, with locations in Brentwood, Knoxville, Murfreesboro, Cordova, Memphis, and Nashville. The wholesale warehouse chain operates 849 locations across the globe and generated $222.7 billion in revenue during Fiscal Year 2022.
