The Student Government Association at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) is targeting a private Christian university over allegations that it forced a homosexual professor to resign last spring.
The SGA at the public university on Tuesday voted 17-5 to suggest that ETSU cut its athletics scheduling and financial partnerships with Milligan University and other universities accused of discrimination, the Johnson City Press reported. Milligan is located about five miles from ETSU.
The vote is non-binding.
ETSU Chief Communications Officer Joe Smith said, “As with any action involving the SGA, this resolution will go through the appropriate review processes,” according to the newspaper.
On the employment section of its website, Milligan says, “Because Milligan University is a Christian liberal arts university, employment requires a Christian commitment and lifestyle consistent with the University’s goals. This creates a unique environment where Christians work with Christians, serving Christ through their work to “change lives and shape culture” — all for the glory of God. It affords an atmosphere “where Jesus Christ is exalted and excellence is the standard.” It offers a friendly environment where every employee is committed to advancing God’s kingdom.”
A group of students and alumni wrote a letter to Milligan’s leadership last spring condemning the professor’s departure, WJHL reported. They accused the university of not showing the love of Jesus and they asked that the university not discriminate against any more LGBTG people.
Milligan President Bill Greer provided the station with a statement.
Greer’s statement included this: “(I)n recent months, we have approved the establishment of a student led campus support group, modified several student handbook policies to, among other things, assure LGBTQ students that they are safe from harassment and bullying, and are considering modifications to other policies that will reinforce Milligan’s desire to be a welcoming community for everyone.”
