FedEx Invests $1.5 Billion to Expand, Modernize Memphis Hub to Handle E-Commerce

 

FedEx filed a $212 million building permit Tuesday for a new package sorting facility and hub in Memphis, MyNorthwest reported.

FedEx in August said it would add $450 million to its ongoing work to modernize and expand FedEx World Hub. The hub, first announced in March 2018, totals an investment of $1.5 billion to handle e-commerce needs with the latest announcement.

WREG in May reported the company would receive more than $21 million in tax breaks.

The FedEx World Hub, which has 11,000 team members and 163 aircraft gates, is the largest sort facility in the FedEx Express global network. Due to growing customer demand, FedEx said it has approved plans to make additional investments at the Memphis World Hub.

The Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development in August said the six-year project will lead to a new sort facility, advanced systems and new bulk truckload building.

“FedEx continues to be both a global leader and a Tennessee icon,” said Lee in the announcement. “In a fast-paced market, we are proud of this company for continuing to invest with an eye on the future and supporting more than 30,000 Memphis area employees.”

Hub modernization efforts are expected to be completed by 2025 with “significant job creation.”

Raj Subramaniam, president and chief operating officer of FedEx Corp., said, “Thank you to Governor Lee and the State of Tennessee for their support of FedEx and this transformational project at the FedEx Express World Hub in Memphis.”
