Live from Music Row Thursday morning on The Tennessee Star Report with Michael Patrick Leahy – broadcast on Nashville’s Talk Radio 98.3 and 1510 WLAC weekdays from 5:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. – host Leahy welcomed Frank Leahy of the Leahy Music group to the newsmakers line.
(Leahy Music plays)
Leahy: That is my favorite musical group in the world the Canadian group, Leahy Music. We are joined now online newsmaker line by my good friend likely distant cousin the drummer for Leahy Frank Leahy. Good morning Frank.
Frank Leahy: Good morning, Michael. Good morning.
Leahy: When last we met Frank it was the last day the world was sane. Do you remember that February 28 last year?
Frank Leahy: Yes. Yes, I remember it really well. Michael, we’re downplaying and just outside of Nashville, and was the first time we got to meet you and your whole family. And it was a great pleasure to meet distant family members.
Leahy: The music was just so great. It was at the Franklin Theatre on February 28, and all of your family was here. And your son was great. The heartthrob right Xavier. The heartthrob
Frank Leahy: No, no, no, hold on. (Chuckles) Yeah, he does his thing. That’s for sure.
Leahy: (Chuckles) But but all of the the the the young girls in the audience after the program they had that they were gathering around him because he was so good and so charismatic. But the entire family all of your siblings with great music. And of course, you hold them together as the drummer. But what happened after that concert on February 28, you packed up and you drove back to Ontario. You drove through downtown Nashville and about an hour after that is when the tornadoes hit downtown Nashville.
Frank Leahy: That’s that’s right. Yes. I remember that. We were leaving and I could remember driving that night and how the weather just drastically started to change. but we were heading a course North. and so we missed it all and we heard about it the next day. We were very fortunate. And then two weeks later we had the coronavirus emergency orders and the country went on lockdown. It’s been kind of crazy ever since you were here Frank.
Frank Leahy: Now, come on. Are you blaming the Canadians?
Leahy: No, I’m saying come back and bring sanity to us.
Frank Leahy: Yeah, I know. It was our last time playing live and it was a great experience. I remember that night very well. And you know these things happen. these things happened and a lot of people are having to deal with the situation. But there are good things in it as well. There’s a lot of music being recorded and written so it’s not all on the bad side.
Leahy: So the good news here is that with that you have been recording music and in our next segment, we’ll come to introduce one of your new songs called Good Water. Which is very good, by the way. All of your stuff is so great. What’s interesting I will tell you for the first time nowhere Franklin theater where Leahy Music performed a year ago is back open. They are doing events here.
Frank Leahy: They are?
Leahy: So I don’t know if this is something we could work out this year, but I’m hoping that there will be a return engagement of Leahy and Franklin, Tennessee. I will be there and all of our list I’ll encourage all of our listeners to come when that happens.
Frank Leahy: Yes. I remember that evening how one thing that we’ve stated is that we really really wanted to come back. And it’s incredible because you know you travel around the country and there are two gentlemen from the Franklin Theater that we had worked with back in. I think it was the 80s. They were both from Ontario. And you forget about who’s gone where but it’s incredible how you go throughout the country and you’ll meet people from your past. And that’s one aspect about that night that I haven’t forgotten. I have one of the gentleman’s phone number on my phone because of our connection that night.
Leahy: That’s great.
Frank Leahy: We would love to come back.
Leahy: And then for our listening audience, perhaps not familiar with you are for a period of time you where you toured with Shania Twain and we’re her opening act and that was back in the 90s. I guess it was right?
Frank Leahy: Yeah. That was late in 1998. I think that’s why we did that for a couple of years. And yeah, that was a great experience. And that evening that we played there at the Franklin Theater two of her bandmates came out to that show.J.D. Blair and Brent Barcus they’re both from the Nashville area.
Leahy: Oh great.
Frank Leahy: And so again, we got to meet up with them. We don’t get that opportunity very often.
