Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) sent a letter to President Biden on Wednesday urging the President to support the Abraham Accords, the historic Middle East peace deal brokered by President Trump.
Hagerty’s letter comes in response to White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki making concerning remarks over the Biden administration’s approach to the Middle East.
“We are not following the tactics of the prior administration. Aside from putting together a peace proposal that was dead on arrival, we don’t think [the previous administration] did anything constructive really to bring an end to the longstanding conflict in the Middle East,” Psaki said.
However, under the Trump administration, the Abraham Accords allowed for historic conversations and agreements to be made. Israel opened diplomatic relations with multiple countries in the region.
The Biden administration has not explicitly stated their position on the significant peace deal.
“I urgently ask you to confirm whether or not the White House Press Secretary’s shocking statement actually reflects a fundamental change in your Administration’s policy on the Abraham Accords,” Hagerty said. “The previous administration facilitated the historic Abraham Accords, a series of agreements under which the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco each agreed to normalize relations with Israel,” he added.
In a greater context, Biden is under pressure from the progressive side of the Democratic Party to decrease support for Israel. Multiple Democratic officials have condemned Israel for working to defend its citizens.
Currently, Israel has been constantly under attack from Hamas — enduring over 3,000 rockets being shot at Israeli cities in less than 10 days.
Hagerty ended his letter by stating, “At a time when Israel is under attack from Palestinian terrorist elements, the White House Press Secretary’s comments, if not corrected, will embolden those who seek violence over peace.”
