The Memphis Police Department (MPD) Friday is mourning the loss of an officer who died in a car crash while on duty.
“Memphis police officers and a citizen collided in this intersection, and at this particular time, we’ve got the Tennessee Highway Patrol that’s out here that is taking control of this investigation,” Memphis Police Chief CJ Davis said in a press conference from the scene of the crash Thursday.
The citizen, who remains unnamed, was killed in the crash.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the citizen that lost their lives and also to our officer,” Davis said. “This is just a reminder of the risk that our officers take every day as they do their work, and we sincerely hope that in the days to come we can find peace and comfort for the family – both the officer’s family and the citizen’s family.”
It was unclear from Davis’ press conference whether the officer had died in the crash, but MPD’s Public Information Officer Lt. Bill Kaiser confirmed for The Tennessee Star that he did indeed pass away.
MPD announced the officer’s death and revealed his identity Friday.
“We are deeply saddened over the tragic and untimely death of one of our very own, Memphis Police Officer Corille Jones. Officer Jones passed away unexpectedly on January 20, 2022, as a result of a traffic crash
Officer Jones began his career with the Memphis Police Department on February 15, 2020. He was a hardworking young officer assigned to the Ridgeway Station Alpha shift. Officer Jones came to work every day to serve the citizens of Memphis and did so with a pleasant disposition and a smile on his face.
Officer Jones personified what it means to be the Best in Blue. His hard work and dedication to serving our community will be missed. Your service and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
