Metro Nashville Council’s meeting agenda is highlighted by resolutions accepting a family planning grant and distributing more than $1 million to local nonprofits.
Metro Council meets on Tuesday at the Metro Courthouse at 6:30pm.
RS2022-1430 is a “resolution accepting a grant from the State of Tennessee, Department of Health, to the Metropolitan Government, acting by and through the Metropolitan Board of Health, for family planning services.” The resolution is sponsored by Council Members Burkley Allen, Erin Evans, Joy Styles, Ginny Welsch, and Jennifer Gamble.
The grant is for $5,325,500.00, and the federal taxpayer funds are provided from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. One of the conditions of the grant is that Metro Nashville shall not “use Title X funds for abortion or abortion-related services to comply with Section 1008 of the Title X statute and 42 CFR Part 59.15.”
RS2022-1423 is a “resolution appropriating a total of $1,740,000 from the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County, acting by and through the Office of Family Safety, to various nonprofit organizations selected to receive American Recovery Plan Act funds.” It is sponsored by Council Members Burkley Allen, Erin Evans, Joy Styles, Ginny Welsch and Jennifer Gamble.
The resolution proposes to appropriate $1,740,000 through the Office of Family Safety to various nonprofit groups that are selected to receive American Recovery Plan Act funds. Mayor John Cooper’s office is in favor of this distribution of funds.
Family & Children’s Services would receive $500,000 “for the provision of therapeutic services for adults and children impacted by interpersonal violence.” The Nashville Children’s Alliance is slated for $450,000 “for the provision of therapeutic services for adults and children impacted by interpersonal violence.”
The Sexual Assault Center would receive $400,000 “for the provision of therapeutic services for adults and children impacted by interpersonal violence.” The Mary Parrish Center would get $120,000 “for the provision of therapeutic services for adults and children impacted by interpersonal violence.” Lastly, AGAPE would be slated to receive $270,000 “for the provision of therapeutic services for adults and children impacted by interpersonal violence and to assist petitioners with Orders of Protection at the Family Safety Center.”
The resolution authorizes Metro Nashville government to enter into contracts with these nonprofits.
One thing that will not be taken up at the upcoming council meeting is ordinance BL2022-1115, legislation that bans License Plate Reader use for cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The Tennessee Star previously reported that Metro Nashville Council deferred action on it because council legislative staff said the proposed ordinance was illegal.

Hey, I am not making a profit. How about throwing some “free” tax dollars in my direction. Or better yet, end taxes on groceries so we can all benefit.
Isn’t it amazing that government takes our tax dollars and gives them to whomever they want. Sounds like welfare to me.
