Michigan Secretary of State Spokesperson: Post Alleging 118-Year-Old Man Who Voted by Absentee Ballot Was Probably Just a Mistyped Entry

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s spokesperson stated that a viral post alleging that a 118-year-old man voted was true, but was probably due to a mistyped entry. Fact-checkers said that they discovered another individual with the same name in the area.

The post featured a screen recording: an individual typed in “William Bradley” into the state’s voter information page, followed by a birth date and zip code. Immediately, the search returned with Bradley’s city clerk information as well as a confirmation that an absentee ballot had been received.

The individual identified in the search return was born in 1902. He allegedly died in 1984 – no obituary records return in regular online searches. Genealogy and records websites return with some matches – on one site, two “William Bradley” individuals with the same birth and death dates appeared. These two individuals were last located in Alabama and Michigan, respectively, but no “William Bradley” appeared in Alabama’s voter registration database.

PolitiFact shared that they contacted another man with the same name and zip code as the deceased Bradley. The man confirmed that the voter information referred to his deceased father. He also reported that a ballot had arrived for his father, but he’d thrown it away.

In the fact-checker’s report, election officials attributed the mixup to the identical names and addresses. Benson’s spokesperson assured citizens that these incidents rarely occur.

“In such scenarios, no one ineligible has actually voted, and there is no impact on the outcome of the election,” she said. “Local clerks can correct the issue when it is brought to their attention.”

At the time of press, the record wasn’t corrected.

Typos and “run-of-the-mill clerical errors” have been the basis for many of the flagged voter registration and ballot count issues. A surge of votes – all for Joe Biden and none for President Donald Trump – was cited as a data entry error and adjusted after widespread outcry.

Government officials’ assurances of the validity of Biden’s sudden leads in Michigan and Wisconsin haven’t assuaged skeptics.

The ballot dump incident sparked concerns, especially as analysts began to compare voting results within counties and precincts. That same day, skepticism arose over the irregularity of Wisconsin voting patterns.

There are other allegations of registered dead voters. However, media and officials continue to dismiss concerns, citing or assuming clerical errors as the reason for discrepancies in every case.
