The Wisconsin Judicial Commission, a state oversight group, has dismissed a complaint against state Supreme Court Justice Jill Karofsky, who told former President Donald Trump’s attorney that his lawsuit over the 2020 election “smacks of racism” and was an attempt to make his “king stay in power.”
Retired Maryland attorney Fletcher Thompson filed the complaint in January 2021 against Karofsky for alleged hostility toward Trump attorney Jim Troupis, according to documents given by the Wisconsin justice to The Associated Press on Saturday.
The state legal commission in November 2022 decided against disciplining Karofsky but warned her to avoid saying sarcastic remarks and remain neutral.
In his complaint, Thompson noted that Karofsky told Troupis during oral arguments that Trump’s lawsuit “smacks of racism” because it attempted to throw out absentee ballots in two of the state’s most diverse counties.
Thompson also said that Karofsky told Troupis he wanted to alter the election results so that his “king could stay in power,” and suggesting there was fraud in the election was “nothing short of shameful.”
Thompson said he was unaware of the commission’s decision to not discipline Karofsky. He said although he wished the oversight group would have taken action, he was not disappointed because he did not expect the commission to investigate his complaint.
