According to a poll released Wednesday, former President Donald Trump is leading President Joe Biden in Georgia. Though the polling forecasts a close race, its results show Biden is receiving lower levels of support from the coalition that backed him in 2020.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) poll showed Trump has the support of 45.4 percent of Georgia voters, while Biden is behind him at 43.5 percent. With a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, the poll shows the men are statistically tied in Georgia.
Biden was determined to win Georgia in 2020, and Trump continues to contest the election results. However, Biden’s 2024 re-election bid seems to have less support from Georgia’s independent voters than he received in 2020 and much less support from Georgia’s black voters than is traditionally enjoyed by Democrats.
With under a year until the 2024 election, the AJC poll found Biden has the support of just 30 percent of independents. Heading into Election Day in 2020, another AJC poll suggested Biden had the support of 69 percent of independents, and exit polls indicated 53 percent voted for Biden.
AJC’s poll determined Trump has the support of exactly one-third of independents. However, 20 percent said they do not know who to vote for. Just 8.3 percent said they would vote for another candidate, and another 8.3 percent said they would not vote for a presidential candidate if Biden and Trump were their options.
Neither Robert F. Kennedy Jr. nor Cornel West, who are mounting independent bids for the White House, were included in the AJC poll.
Additionally, while exit polling showed Biden had the support of 88 percent of black voters in Georgia in 2020, Wednesday’s AJC poll showed him receiving the support of only 78 percent in 2024. Trump increased his share of support to 12 percent.
Trump, who is facing racketeering charges in Georgia for his contest in the 2020 election, was similarly tied with Biden when it comes to public perception. The poll showed 39 percent of Georgians have a favorable opinion of Trump, compared to 57 percent who have an unfavorable one. Similarly, 40 percent of Georgians have a favorable opinion of Biden, while 55 percent hold an unfavorable one.
The poll seems to match the results of the latest HarrisX-Messenger polling released Tuesday. That polling found Trump would beat Biden in a nationwide head-to-head, securing 51 percent of the vote compared to Biden’s 49 percent. When voters were given Kennedy and West as potential options, Trump’s lead over Biden increased to 5 percent.
Trump also won the majority of independents in that poll, which showed him receiving the support of 35 percent of black voters and 47 percent of Hispanics.
While most polling shows Trump ahead or tied, Georgia election integrity group VoterGA recently warned the criminal cases against him are an attempt to “influence” and “manipulate” the 2024 election results in favor of Biden and the Democrats.
Trump’s first hearing in the Georgia racketeering case is scheduled for December 1.
