President-Elect Trump Unveils Plan to Be a ‘Champion’ for Homeschool Families

Donald Trump

President-elect Donald Trump said his incoming administration will be a “champion” for homeschool families by working to extend the 2017 Trump tax cuts when it comes to costs associated with education.

In 2017, Trump signed into law the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which allowed families to use 529 Education Savings Accounts to fund K-12 private school tuition – up to $10,000 per year, per child – tax free.

Two years later, the SECURE Act of 2019 expanded the benefits of 529 Education Savings Accounts by allowing plan holders to withdraw a maximum lifetime amount of $10,000 per beneficiary to pay down qualified student debt.

During his next term, Trump said he will work to expand the tax cuts he signed during his first term to allow homeschool families the same opportunity to use $10,000 from 529 Education Savings Accounts a year per child to spend on costs associated with homeschool education.

“As President, it was my honor to support America’s homeschool families—and to protect the God-given right of every parent to be the steward of their children’s education,” Trump said in a video released by his campaign in September 2023.

Trump’s plan to extend the tax cuts to homeschool families is included in the 2024 Republican Party Platform as is the support for universal school choice in every U.S. State.

In addition to Trump’s plan to extend the 529 plan benefits to homeschool families, the president-elect said his administration will also work to “ensure that every homeschool family is entitled to full access to the benefits available to non-homeschooled students—including participating in athletic programs, clubs, after school activities, educational trips, and more.”

“I will do everything I can to support parents who make the courageous choice of homeschool,” Trump said. “To every homeschool family, I will be your champion.”

Homeschoolers should receive the same “vouchers” that are offered to students who to opt out of the public education cesspool. Homeschooling is not cheap. Why should those folks be penalized for taking on the job the government has totally failed at doing?
