Roger Simon on Common Features Among Mass Shooters: ‘They’re Crazy!’

Roger Simon, the co-founder of PJ Media and author of the newly-launched Substack “American Refugees,” said the noticeable common factor among a majority of mass shooters is that the perpetrators are simply “crazy.”

“In every case of these kinds of shootings, one of the things that is always amusing to me is that you get a report that police are looking for the motivation. The motivation is they’re crazy,” Simon said on Friday’s edition of The Michael Patrick Leahy Show.

Simon’s comments come days after The Tennessee Star published all 90 pages of the journal written between January and March of 2023 by Audrey Elizabeth Hale, the 28-year-old biological woman who self-identified as a transgender man and who, on March 27, 2023, murdered three 9-year-old students and three staff members at the Covenant School in Nashville before being subsequently killed by officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD).

The contents of the journal, which MNPD recovered in Hale’s vehicle on the day of the shooting, were legally obtained by The Star in early June of 2024 from a source familiar with the MNPD investigation into the shooting.

However, approximately 20 additional journals written by Hale over an estimated 15 years from 2007 to 2022, which are said to contain about 1,000 pages, continue to remain under wraps by MNPD more than a year after the shooting took place.

Simon said the continued withholding of those materials by MNPD from the public appears to be an attempt by the government to “cover-up” the effects of the “transgender movement.”

“I think there are two things going on behind the scenes in this. One is a very old-fashioned and obvious thing, which is the cover-up of local people. That’s been going on in every locality for time immemorial. There’s nothing new in it. There’s nothing good in it. But that’s the obvious part. The other thing that’s going on is, and this is coming from higher places, and from really more dangerous places, ultimately, the cover-up of the transgender movement,” Simon explained.

Simon said the apparent cover-up appears to be protecting Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s (VUMC) involvement in Hale’s crimes, because Hale was a 22-year psychiatric patient of VUMC before the 2023 shooting.

In addition, as previously reported by The Star, Hale expressed suicidal ideation and homicidal ideation to VUMC staff while under the institution’s care.

In Tennessee, there is a duty to warn law medical professionals must follow if a patient makes credible threats to individuals or other entities; however, Hale’s threats to VUMC staff did not appear to be reported to law enforcement.

Simon said VUMC “should be investigated thoroughly” and “punished” for not reporting Hale’s suicidal and homicidal ideations.

“Why it is not being done is because they want to preserve the transgender movement for two reasons. One is it makes hospitals a fortune, which is horrible, and the other thing, equally horrible, is that it is part of the left’s war on the family. So those two things are operative,” Simon added.

Simon also pointed out the lack of “scientific evidence” that has been launched into the transgender “fad,” noting how there have been “a number of cases of people who are transgender acting out violently across the country.”

“What never gets investigated in all this is to what degree helping people change their sex puts them on tilt like a pinball machine. That’s a scientific investigation that is not going on despite the fact that, this is anecdotal to some extent, there have been a number of cases of people who are transgender acting out violently across the country, whether male to female or female to male. This is not to say that people like the late Rene Richards, the tennis player, don’t exist. They do. But in the old days, they were an outlying minority. It’s a fad,” Simon said.

Simon added it appears that today’s generation of children is being manipulated during adolescence to change their genders as a coping mechanism for the transition into adulthood.

“Adolescence is troubling to virtually everybody. It has always been troubling…All of a sudden, all of these people who are disturbed and in adolescence, which is normal, unfortunately are being told if you chose a different sex or gender, as they say, you’ll all be well,” Simon said.

“It’s all nonsense,” Simon added.
