Sanford, Walsh, and Weld All Listed as Candidates for Michigan Primary

The Michigan Department of State released Friday a list of candidates who will be on the ballot for the March 10 presidential primaries.

All three long-shot challengers to President Donald Trump will be included on the Republican primary ballot, including conservative radio host Joe Walsh, former Massachusetts Governor Bill Weld, and former South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford.

Under Michigan law, the Secretary of State is required to issue a list of individuals “generally advocated by the national news media to be potential presidential candidates” for the Republican and Democratic parties.

The candidates for the Democratic primary are:

  • Michael Bennet
  • Joe Biden
  • Michael Bloomberg
  • Cory Booker
  • Steve Bullock
  • Pete Buttigieg
  • Julián Castro
  • John Delaney
  • Tulsi Gabbard
  • Kamala D. Harris
  • Amy Klobuchar
  • Wayne Messam
  • Bernie Sanders
  • Joe Sestak
  • Tom Steyer
  • Elizabeth Warren
  • Marianne Williamson
  • Andrew Yang

According to a press release, the chairs of the Michigan Democratic and Republican parties now have until the evening of November 12 to add names of other candidates to the candidate list for their party. The candidates themselves have until December 13 to change parties or withdraw as a candidate.

The Minnesota Republican Party faced backlash recently for excluding Trump’s challengers from its list of candidates. In a letter to the Minnesota Secretary of State, Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan outlined the party’s “determination of candidates” for the March 3 primary, and only listed the name of President Trump.

Average polling from RealClearPolitics has Trump leading his three challengers by at least 80 percentage points in every poll. The closest poll was one out of Emerson College that showed Trump beating Weld by 68 points.
