Bedford County Schools, Hickman County Schools, and Maury County Schools were forced to close Tuesday for the day due to a second wave of dangerous flooding.
The National Weather Service in Nashville reported on Monday that the height of the Duck River reached 28.8 feet at 7 p.m. and continues to rise. In response, reports of flooded roads and bridges began rolling in Monday evening. River waters are expected to fall below the flood stage by early Wednesday morning.
On the Bedford County Schools website, a message read, “Due to continued flooding & closed roads, Bedford County Schools will be closed on Tues., Sept. 21, 2021. SACP (School Age Care Program) will be open at Thomas Magnet School from 6:00AM – 6:00PM.”
In a tweet, Maury County Schools announced, “Maury County Public Schools will be closed tomorrow due to flooding. This includes all area schools. The Central Office will be open and 12-month employees should report to work unless they are unable due to flooding. Please stay safe!”
According to Maury County Schools Inclement Weather Decision Making Process, “There are eight inclement weather days built into the school calendar; these days may be used for widespread illness closing as well. The Superintendent and Central Office Administrators are responsible for developing and implementing a plan to make up for additional days missed.”
So far, Maury County Schools have been closed two days this school year so far, one due to flooding and the other due to staffing shortages.
This week’s round of flooding in Middle Tennessee comes exactly one month after the deadly floods in August that killed 20 people, left more than 270 homes destroyed, and damaged more than 500 structures.
